Chapter 223: Chapter 146: Forest Wolf

North Lake had already frozen over, with a thin layer of snow blanketing its surface. Lin Wu had planned to use the ice to lure the Six Wings from the surrounding cliffs into attacking, but he had underestimated Dawn’s shamelessness. The snow was not thick, and neither was the ice. For the first ten meters or so, there was no issue, but as soon as he ventured into the dangerous zone beyond that, Lin Wu heard a cracking sound. His heart sank as his feet plunged straight into the lake, an icy chill instantly flooding from his feet throughout his body. The half-meter-deep icy water gave Lin Wu a real jolt.

Lin Wu took off his backpack and tossed it aside, lying flat on the ice and slowly inching forward. Perhaps it was his Agility attribute that came into play, as he miraculously crawled back up. Just as Lin Wu reached his backpack, preparing to escape the damned North Lake, the Six Wings on the cliffs launched a group attack, swooping down from the cliffs like gliders in a relentless dive.

Lin Wu rolled to the left to dodge the first one, easy. But something felt off. The Six Wings creature penetrated the ice layer and met its end, instantly cracking the ice nearby. Lin Wu quickly stood up to use his Wind Stinger, but as he had already broken the ice, when the Wind Stinger activated, it didn’t move him sideways but instead stabbed diagonally into the water. The good news was that he avoided the second Six Wings; the bad news was that everything below his thighs was submerged in the icy water, and the even worse news was that the unexpected angle caused him to lose his footing, plunging him entirely into the water.

The scrub that was originally taking advantage of the environment to kill him was intolerable. Lin Wu drew his Silencer as he turned, lying in the water three meters away Lock Head killed one, then he immediately stood up, executing another Wind Stinger in the direction of the shore. He ran out of stamina, still 8 meters from the shore.

The Six Wings in the air adjusted their trajectory, plummeting towards Lin Wu like cannonballs. Lin Wu rolled to the left, narrowly avoiding a collision with a Six Wings, which then dived headfirst into the water, while Lin Wu ended up rolling in after it.

By this time, Lin Wu had severe frostbite, and his limbs and bodily functions were compromised. Lin Wu did not have time to tend to his injuries. He rolled towards the shore, stood up, and continued to roll, using the strength of his waist, which was still unaffected, to move towards the shore. Several Six Wings brushed past him. Four meters from the shore, gunshots rang out from the bank, a continuous burst of fire, as several Six Wings fell from the sky.

Lin Wu stood up and looked up to see a woman wearing a snow cap and goggles, clothed in a sporty outfit. The woman was wielding an assault rifle, with each burst taking down a Six Wings. By the time Lin Wu crawled to the shore, there were no more Six Wings in sight.

The woman reached out her hand from the bank, pulling Lin Wu to his feet. Seeing that moving was very difficult for Lin Wu, she said, "Wait for me," and then skied away.

About a minute later, the woman skied back dragging a withered pine tree. She snapped off its branches and quickly lit a fire. Having regained his basic self-preserving ability in the sun after taking some medicine, Lin Wu was still grateful: "Thank you, my name is Lin Wu."

The woman nodded, "Don’t mention it. My name is Blood Meng."

Another dream? Lin Wu helped snap branches and asked, "What brings you to these wilds?"

After looking at Lin Wu for a moment, the woman said, "I’m looking for a hidden secret location nearby."

Lin Wu asked, "A6?"

Blood Meng startled, dropping the branch and stepping back. Her hand stealthily reached for her weapon, suspiciously saying, "I didn’t expect to run into a colleague."

Lin Wu said, "I’m not a Fortress agent."

Upon hearing this, Blood Meng seemed to breathe a sigh of relief but did not let her guard down: "Then how do you know about A6?"

Lin Wu said, "Because I stole your mission."

Blood Meng loosened her grip on her gun, moving a bit closer, "I believe you."

Lin Wu said, "It seems you have something to say."

Blood Meng said, "I had intended to inquire about A6, but it would be taking advantage of your gratitude to ask you for answers right after helping you."

"Haha, thanks for your help." Lin Wu knew that even without Blood Meng’s help, he wouldn’t have died. He continued, "I don’t know much myself; it’s mostly my friend who is in charge. Just give me a second."

Lin Wu said, "Calling Little Dog Shana."

Shana responded, "Don’t go giving me funny nicknames. What’s up?"

Lin Wu asked, "Is Maya still there?"

Shana said, "She is."

Lin Wu said, "I’ve met a friend here who has some questions about A6."

From the side, Blood Meng interjected, "The chief engineer’s name."

Lin Wu relayed, "The chief engineer’s name."

After asking Maya, Shana replied, "Mel."

"Mel," Lin Wu asked Blood Meng, "Anything else you want to know?"

Blood Meng shook her head, and Lin Wu said, "That’s it, the call is over."

Shana said, "Maya asked me to tell you that North Lake is fed by mountain springs and doesn’t freeze easily. Be careful of the ice thickness when going onto the lake."

"..." A line of frustration crossed Lin Wu’s face: "Please pass on my thanks. Bye."

Ending the call, Blood Meng sat down, taking a swig from a stainless steel flask. She paused for a moment and then offered the flask to Lin Wu, who shook his head, "I don’t drink."

"Haha." Blood Meng laughed without insisting. She took another drink, then let out a satisfied "ah."

Out of curiosity, Lin Wu asked, "Why are so many Fortress agents in North Town these past two days?"

Blood Meng answered, "It’s a winter Fortress agent event, set at the location of the top-ranking agent in points."

Lin Wu inquired, "What sort of event?"

"Doing missions, killing each other. Completing a mission earns you 20% points, killing a Fortress agent also gets you 20% points, dying costs you 30% of your points," explained Blood Meng as Lin Wu listened intently. She added, "Currently, Nightmare is at the top of the points. The first agent to hunt down Nightmare will get 50% of their own original points."
