Chapter 209: Chapter 140: Opening the Blind Box_2

Lin Wu’s drone was circling above the observation post when he discovered that this place used to be a radar station. A towering signal tower, two vehicles topped with radar, and a two-story building that covered dozens of square meters in the middle. The entire observation post spanned about four hundred square meters, surrounded by railings, with two artillery pieces parked on the side facing the road. Besides, there were a few scattered soldier zombies.

Shana was about to step up the stairs with her hand on the railing when Lin Wu pulled her back, signaling her to wait. Lin Wu lowered the drone to take a closer look at the entrance formed by four stacked containers, but found nothing out of place.

"We haven’t encountered any danger on our way here," Lin Wu said. "Either someone has reached the observation post before us, or there’s a trap."

Shana asked, "Did the drone find any automatic sensing guns?"

Lin Wu shook his head. "No, but it reminded me of a joke."

"Hmm?"

Lin Wu plucked two leaves, handing one to Shana. "Delicious, mint-flavored."

Shana didn’t believe it, shaking her head vigorously.

Lin Wu put one of the leaves in his mouth and chewed, seeming to enjoy its taste, and then took a breath against the wind. "Refreshingly cool."

Seeing this, Shana put the leaf in her mouth to chew, and then, like Lin Wu, spat it out. Bitter and astringent, it was not something meant for human consumption. Annoyed, Shana slapped Lin Wu a few times.

Lin Wu explained, "Indeed, someone has been to the observation post, but they either didn’t find any supplies or looted them, then spread false information saying there were traps and dangers along the way. Normal people would think that if the system could set up so many traps and dangers, there must be good stuff."

Lin Wu continued, "In fact, aside from encountering Black Bear, it took less time to get here than I thought. I assumed we’d have to spend the night in the mountains, but we arrived here at three in the afternoon, in just over five hours."

Shana was skeptical. "But isn’t it strange for such an observation post to appear in the system?"

Lin Wu guessed, "I think it’s a special outpost. Remember the introduction of the Outpost Card? Everyone got excited just at the mention of electricity and eventually secured a substation to provide power to the base. If we take this observation post, I believe we can gain strong capabilities. Let’s go up and see."

Having said that, Lin Wu cautiously walked toward the steps, one hand on the railing, ready to jump back at the first sign of danger. The drone always hovered near the entrance, monitoring the surroundings.

All was safe, and Lin Wu and Shana reached the peak without issue. The eight scattered zombies posed no threat to them. After dealing with the zombies, they entered the building, found many text documents, but no weapons.

The documents revealed this to be Left County Air Defense Early Warning Radar Station. Soon after the outbreak of the zombie virus, due to its special location, the radar station was airlifted two 150mm artillery pieces to assist in blockading and eliminating zombies. The artillery covered most of the roads in North Town, the northern district of Left County, and the farmlands and wilderness of North Town.

An officer’s diary recorded that after the virus outbreak, many residents of Future City fled to North Town, causing the virus to spread quickly. To cope with this sudden event, Fungus Side immediately responded. One of the countermeasures was to set up roadblocks in North Town. The diary mentioned that one day, the radar station received orders to bomb the tent area near the Sentry Card.

The officer communicated with his superiors, who told him that North Town had fallen, and everyone in the tent area was infected. The officer replied that he couldn’t fire on humans who hadn’t turned into zombies yet. Generally, in both legal and ethical terms, zombies are sick people. Everyone knows that rabies is fatal and the patient is dangerous, but most countries won’t kill a patient just because they have rabies.

The superiors told the officer that humanity was facing the threat of extinction and that the order had to be executed. After much hesitation, the officer ordered to adjust the artillery, and just as he was about to flatten the tent area, the superiors issued a new order for him to abandon the bombardment. The reason was that the virus had already spread throughout Left County, making the destruction of the tent area meaningless.

The diary then recorded that in the following week, headquarters sent them food and water twice, with the last page written three days after the last resupply. That night, the officer felt unwell and found that other soldiers at the radar station experienced similar symptoms. He suspected the food and water supplies were contaminated.

Shana inspected the area and came out of the building to Lin Wu, "It’s been searched." Every drawer had been pulled out, and all seven lockers were violently pried open; the dormitory’s bedding and clothes were strewn everywhere.

Lin Wu stood between the two pieces of artillery, looking down, vaguely making out the location of the hilltop church. Lin Wu said, "It looks like we’ll have to spend the night here."

Shana asked, "Doesn’t it feel a bit like Waste City?"

Lin Wu replied, "A bit. Since we have time, let’s assume the player didn’t scour everything clean. Knowing Dawn as I do, the good stuff is always very well hidden. It’s a possibility worth considering. Since we’re just sitting around, let’s take a gamble and see who can find the valuables first."

Shana was skeptical again. "Did you find some sort of clue?"

Lin Wu: "No." He gripped his left fist tightly.

Shana immediately stepped forward: "Open your hand."

"No."

"Open it." Shana threatened with her neat teeth showing: "Or I’ll bite you."

Lin Wu helplessly opened his hand, revealing a crumpled piece of paper. Shana unfolded it and read, "The person looking is a pig..."

Shana, speechless, placed a hand on her forehead and asked, "Aren’t you being childish?"

Lin Wu chuckled, "Although it’s childish, I believe there’s good stuff at the observation post. Last time we got an M4A1, logic dictated there should have been no weapons, but there was one hidden. Theoretically speaking, giving a lab boss one weapon is like giving a captain a pistol, useful in emergencies. Whether it’s radar operators or artillerymen, rifles aren’t their required armament, but officers should have at least one weapon to better command their soldiers."

Shana asked, "Even if that theory makes sense, isn’t it possible the weapons have already been taken?"

"Not sure." Lin Wu looked at several shipping containers: "I think it’s inside the containers."

Shana said, "You mean the artillery and containers were air-dropped, and the containers aren’t actually for constructing a doorway but to act as storage?"

Lin Wu said, "That’s the idea for now."

Shana said, "I don’t think other players won’t notice the containers."

Lin Wu said, "That’s what’s interesting. If I’m not wrong, the containers are either empty, or filled with stuff like ammunition that players can’t use. Players open them up and see what’s inside at a glance."

Shana, following Lin Wu’s tone, said: "But the good stuff is hidden among them."

Lin Wu: "Perhaps."

Shana angrily said, "You’re the one who started this, and now you’re telling me perhaps? You can’t say perhaps; you have to be certain."

Lin Wu hurriedly said, "Okay, okay, what’s the wager?"

Shana thought for a while: "I want a hot shower, you sort it out."

Lin Wu sighed lightly: "Even if I win, I’ll still grant your wish."

Shana, touched, asked, "What about if you win? What do you want?"

Lin Wu said, "My friend Shana wants a hot bath, you sort it out."

Shana immediately burst into uncontrollable laughter, extended her thumb, and pressed it against Lin Wu’s thumb: "It’s a deal."

It had been raining all day. Before attempting to open the mystery shipping containers, Lin Wu and Shana gathered combustible materials together and tidied up the resting room, planning to spend the night at the observation post. By 5 pm, it was already getting dark. They lit a fire and started working on the containers.

The four containers were stacked in pairs; the second container was just like the first, filled with artillery shells. Struck by a sudden idea, Lin Wu and Shana carried the shells to the artillery. After studying for a while, they managed to stuff the shells into the breech and closed the breech block. As Lin Wu pulled the lanyard, the artillery remained motionless.

After a lengthy examination and failing to identify the problem, the playful investigation that spanned over an hour was abandoned. The two resumed their treasure hunt and opened the third container. The third container was full of food and water, mostly canned food and bucketed water. Unfortunately, Dawn had stored these supplies in wooden boxes, forcing the two to spend a grueling hour and a half unpacking.
