Chapter 206: Chapter 139: Exploration
Just in that short time, Maya had already begun drafting a preliminary plan. The sawmill had two units, one was the indoor factory, and the other was the large open space connected to it on the north side.
About ten meters south of the sawmill’s gate was a road, allowing direct access from the small iron gate into the factory. Parking lots were situated on the east and west sides, each roughly one thousand square meters in size, piled with a large amount of long logs. Iron gates allowed entry into the factory from both east and west. The north side was the most special, with a large open area that was very spacious and had a wall connecting the factory complex. There was also a gate on the north side, beyond which was Left County River. The river was neither deep nor fast, and zombies were frequently seen walking in the water.
The advantage of the sawmill was the lack of patrolling zombie hordes in the area, which Maya considered not very difficult to take over. The difficulty lay in holding the sawmill. There were gates on all four sides without any significant height difference, and the interior was open and flat, which meant that players might directly face a large influx of zombies. The only solution was to use scrapped cars to block the gates, but that wouldn’t stop Titans and Frenzies. Also, all four gates couldn’t be blocked, otherwise the players would have problems getting in and out before even attacking the city.
Lin Wu pointed at the map and said, "There is a highway in front of the south gate, and across the highway is a gentle slope with an air monitoring station on it. I can occupy the monitoring station as a sub-base. We’ll build a watchtower with a shooting range that overlooks the south gate and the two open spaces to the east and west. Since the two bases are close, the safety zone covers the south gate highway, which will provide security for daily safety."
Maya nodded, "That’s a good idea. Given our current firepower, we’re not quite ready to face hordes of zombies head-on. One approach is to step up our collection of firearms, especially automatic rifles. Another is to sneak into the sawmill and exterminate all the zombies in the area. Lin Wu, this is how you normally play, so you don’t need to practice. I will conduct systematic training for Bai Ban to ensure the successful occupation of the sawmill."
Stone said, "When we first occupied the church on top of the hill at the beginning of the game, it was a gamble on our lives. The situation is different moving into Left County, we need to ensure that everyone has the best chance to survive. Therefore, I want to bring up again the matter of my marriage to Su Shi. I hope you’ll consider pairing up to marry, to ensure you can return to North Town after death. More than everyone’s skills and strength, I value this rare chance to bond."
Stone continued, "After living together for more than three months, we all know each other well. It would be difficult to find another group like Shadow that’s this harmonious. Even if you did, you would be a newcomer. It’s hard for a newcomer with no contributions to integrate into a group. But here at Shadow, we’ve seen your contributions. Shadow doesn’t belong to anyone in particular; it belongs to all of us. To prevent tragedies like Tangtang and Cotton, that is why I suggest you consider marriage."
Lin Wu retorted, "You’re afraid of being mocked alone, so you plan to drag others down with you to be laughed at."
Stone pointed at Lin Wu, "As long as enough people get married, the one being laughed at will be you, the single dog."
Lin Wu was momentarily at a loss for words.
Maya said earnestly, "Stone has a point. I’m keeping a spot open; anyone in need can talk to me."
Was marriage so casual? Excluding the moral aspect, the status and role of a marriage license were very low, almost untouched by legal constraints and limitations. Lin Wu happened to be an exception; as a person who normally didn’t like responsibilities, he felt a strong sense of duty. He believed that dating, marrying, and even having children were all serious commitments. He would never marry for the sake of a game, but he had nothing against others marrying for that reason.
...
After the gathering ended, Maya saw Lin Wu to the door. The two discussed and completed the operations for the base, with Maya officially leaving the supermarket base. Afterwards, Maya said to Lin Wu, "I’m sorry about last time, for not taking your feelings into account."
Lin Wu smiled, "Even if you had considered my feelings, it wouldn’t have changed your decision."
Maya responded with a smile, "Thank you for preserving my dignity in front of Starfire Base."
Lin Wu replied, "It’s only right."
Maya extended her hand, "I had a great time this month."
Lin Wu shook hands with Maya, "Me too, take care."
"Take care."
Shana started the motorcycle, Lin Wu got on and waved goodbye to everyone. After crossing the factory bridge, Shana looked back and said, "You really are difficult to get along with."
"Use the headset," Lin Wu replied. "Knowing that I’m difficult to get along with, you dared to provoke me from the first second we met?"
Shana laughed, "I don’t care, I won’t stop speaking out because you’re unhappy."
Lin Wu didn’t argue. After passing the Sentry Card on the motorcycle, Lin Wu had Shana pull over under a roadside tree to take shelter from the rain. Shana thought Lin Wu was being playful, not expecting him not to even glance at the Frenzy over twenty meters away, as he asked, "Shana, who do you think is right or wrong in this matter?"
Knowing Lin Wu was asking about the matter between him and Maya, Shana replied, "From an outsider’s perspective, it’s definitely your fault. Maya had the big picture in mind, you didn’t die and even got the highest score, yet you wallow in self-pity like a nagging wife. That’s result-oriented thinking. From a process standpoint, Maya gave you a choice, you chose to follow her orders, and then threw a tantrum at her afterward."
Lin Wu asked, "Is there any other perspective besides that of outsiders?"
Shana said, "There’s the perspective of you and Maya, the parties involved. You feel that Maya betrayed the friendship and trust between you, but that’s a thought you can’t voice out, because it doesn’t hold up under scrutiny. What you don’t realize is that from Maya’s perspective, she’s the biggest loser, you might even be her best friend in the game."
