Chapter 199: Chapter 136: Waste City (IX)
The sun rose from the east, shining on Lin Wu’s face as he opened his eyes and stared blankly at the blue sky for a few minutes. He rolled over to the lamppost, sprawled on it like a sloth, packed up his sleeping bag, and slid down the pole to the ground. He then grabbed a couple of cans and a bottle of water from his backpack and carelessly started his breakfast.
He had just taken a bite of the damn beans when he saw a young man and woman approaching from not too far away last night. With youthful faces, they weren’t old. The boy was slightly timid, trailing half a step behind the girl. The girl wasn’t much braver, staring at the mummy before her, "I’m Fei Sha." She waited.
Lin Wu: "I’m Zou Stone."
The boy said nervously, "I’m actually Zou Stone."
Lin Wu spluttered out a mouthful of beans, gestured for them to sit down on the ground, and then tore off six or seven hemostatic bandages that were still hanging from his body. Why keep the bandages? Too lazy to bother—as long as they didn’t hinder movement, why bother making it neat? Maybe in a while, if he got hurt, the bandages would come right in handy, right?
Lin Wu said, "My name is Lin Wu."
Fei Sha sat down: "Hello, Big Brother Lin Wu, thank you for last night."
"Don’t mention it." Lin Wu asked, "You seem quite young."
Fei Sha replied, "We just graduated from college."
Lin Wu spat out another mouthful of beans: "Do you have a mirror?"
Fei Sha, puzzled, handed over a small mirror. Lin Wu took it and saw his peerless visage in the mirror, as youthful as theirs. Having gotten used to seeing old men and women and not looking at himself, he had completely forgotten his own age.
Fei Sha and Zou Stone were from Tomorrow City. They had a total of eight members, all college graduates, with a base named Youth. All eight had entered the Waste City instance, not completing a single mission, instead losing six of their team. If it weren’t for Lin Wu’s intervention last night, they would have already been able to reunite with their close friends.
Fei Sha asked, "Where are you heading, Big Brother Lin Wu? Are you alone?"
Lin Wu replied, "I’m heading to a place."
Zou Stone asked, "What’s over there?"
Lin Wu replied, "I don’t know either. If you’re looking to do a mission, go two kilometers north. There’s a soldier lying unconscious there. The evacuation point is 700 meters away, it’s a relatively easy task." He did not plan to join up with strangers.
After he finished speaking, Lin Wu got to his feet, shouldered his backpack, and shook hands with the two people who also stood up: "It was nice meeting you, goodbye."
"Goodbye."
Lin Wu was once again on his own journey. In the afternoon, he met a solitary woman who, like himself, had lost her companions. They passed each other with a nod, acknowledging one another without conversation. Lin Wu remained optimistic—he didn’t wonder why he only encountered these few players. Instead, he thought it was remarkable that he was still meeting players at all.
He found a place to rest for the night and continued on his way the next day until he finally arrived at the third rally point at three o’clock in the afternoon.
...
The third rally point was a city hall, with over thirty steps leading up to it, which were littered with landmines. Sandbags were piled up at the entrance of the city hall, and two armed NPC soldiers manned machine guns, vigilantly watching the outside.
Here, the soldier NPCs were not just for show—they recognized Lin Wu as a player but did not shout or demand identification, only watched as he walked past them.
The city hall had three floors—in the first floor, soldiers and scientists were visible, though Lin Wu did not see any other players. He quickly found that the mission information was displayed on the plasma TV in the main hall.
The third rally point housed five scientists and ten soldiers who would hold the point for four days and fifteen hours more to gather scattered scientists and soldiers.
Third Rally Point Notice.
1. Whenever the mist envelops the surrounding area, zombies will begin to assault the city hall.
2. The city hall has two gates, front and back. Soldiers are advised not to leave the hall when the mist appears, and at the very least, not to leave through these two gates.
3. All soldiers joining the rally point please go to the second floor to see the quartermaster for a new communication earpiece.
4. Resources at this rally point are limited; currently, only ammunition and food supplies are provided, no medical supplies. If you have spare medicine, please hand it over to the quartermaster.
5. Obey commands and orders.
6. Long live humanity.
The bottom of the TV displayed the current tally of the rally point: scientists 5, soldiers 10, rescue team 1.
...
After reading the notice, Lin Wu went to the back door, which was barricaded with sandbags. A soldier with a machine gun lay in a ten-meter-long corridor keeping a close eye on the rear entrance. Lin Wu went upstairs, got a new communication earpiece from the quartermaster. Channel 1 was the command channel, and the quartermaster asked Lin Wu to try not to change it. Lin Wu handed over his excess Hemostatic Bandages and painkillers to the quartermaster. He then restocked on ammunition and food from the quartermaster.
On the second floor, there was a room called the rest area, where five soldiers and a few scientists were reading and drinking tea. Inside, there was a coffee machine, a pool table, and other amenities.
Two soldiers were on the third floor, one at the front and the other at the back, holding assault rifles and keeping a watch on the surroundings. The ten NPC soldiers were divided into two shifts for guard duty, and the system did not restrict the movements of the players.
Compared to compressed biscuits, the food provided at the rally point was much better, and it included black bread, tea, pasta, instant noodles, and drinks. The kitchen was on the first floor, and those in need could cook their own food there.
Lin Wu headed to the kitchen to boil himself two packs of instant noodles, then brought his noodles up to the third floor to eat while observing the surrounding area. Although there were no buildings around, there were many steps, combined with green belts, creating multiple blind spots for shooting, which was highly unfavorable for defenders.
