Chapter 189: Chapter 132 Waste City (Six)
Lin Ma and another person packed their luggage and made it to the Signal Transmission Tower using the last 10 minutes of sunset. There were no buildings and no zombies within twenty-five meters of the tower, only a withered tree. Lin Wu climbed the straight ladder to the top of the tower first. There was a circular maintenance area at the top, which was also devoid of zombies. The downside was the lack of a roof, the ground was hard, and there was a lot of sand and wind. The upside was it was safe.
They sat against the railing, replenishing their food and water, watching the last glimmer of light in the west disappear as night finally fell. Almost simultaneously, Lin Wu heard a cooing sound, repeating every three seconds, and asked with confusion, "Blind Bat?"
"No, it’s mechanical," Maya pointed southwest, "It should be a green device, about five hundred meters away. This device is likely solar-powered, drawing its energy from the sun. At night, when it senses a change in light, it switches to sonar, using sound to command the zombies."
With the naked eye, the two couldn’t clearly see the conditions of the highway over fifty meters away from them. Even after using night vision goggles, they detected nothing unusual. Half an hour later, a bright moon rose, and even without the aid of night vision goggles, they could see the surroundings clearly through the scope. For now, the zombies showed no signs of movement.
Maya handed the Silencer back to Lin Wu, "Your ex-girlfriend."
Lin Wu turned to face due south, where, about a hundred meters away, there was a three-story building with light in one of the second-floor rooms. With the help of the firelight, Lin Wu saw four people. Starlight and Sunlight were sitting on a worn-out sofa, while Fire Dance and a blond man sat on two separate stools. Above the fire hung a pot, which suggested they were cooking.
Lin Wu said, "Talk about creativity; we should also cook our canned food, it’s really inedible."
Maya didn’t pick up on the comment but said, "It seems they don’t think zombies are sensitive to light. They must have accomplished a mission and gleaned this information from the rescued scientists. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be lighting a fire so openly."
"That’s right, they’re not stupid."
Maya glanced at Lin Wu, "Do you recognize the guy with the dyed blond hair?"
Lin Wu looked again, "I can’t see the face clearly; I probably don’t know him."
Maya said, "This evening, three of them met me, and they left one person behind. This is somewhat surprising to me."
Lin Wu said, "I told you they’re not stupid. The debauched offspring of the Fortress clan will be sent into exile." If the young people of Fire Dance’s clan committed a moral wrongdoing, it would be tied to the trust. For example, the head of the family might decide to punish them for ten years. During these ten years, they could only receive living expenses from the trust, were not allowed to hold positions or work at Fortress Company, were prohibited from attending all clan gatherings, and were forbidden from associating with members of the family outside their immediate blood relatives.
Maya said, "Perhaps this is one of the reasons why Fortress Company has stood for a thousand years. Without a doubt, every CEO of Fortress Company has been outstanding and excellent."
Lin Wu said, "A thousand years ago, it was also five major clans, but not these five clans; in fact, there have been two turnovers. During the time these five clans controlled Fortress Company, an incredibly impressive individual emerged. He established the clan system for the families, and since then these five clans have firmly held control over Fortress Company for four hundred years. Furthermore, the clan’s descendants have been outstanding in various industries."
Maya said, "Do I need to remind you? Is that blond guy making advances?"
"Crazy, I broke up with her two years ago."
Maya facepalmed, realizing how absurd it was to discuss such a personal topic with Lin Wu.
Lin Wu set aside the Silencer, took out a can of beans that were horrible to eat, and said, "Women, they’ll only mess with my shooting accuracy."
Maya wanted to ask if he planned to never date in his life, but as she was about to speak, she felt like she was being nosy again and changed the subject, "The intel says there are 30 scientists and 60 soldiers. Why do we only see one scientist and one soldier each time?"
Lin Wu was startled; he hadn’t thought of this question. After pondering for a while, he said, "Could it be that the scientists and soldiers we rescued got separated from the main group?"
"I don’t know." Maya stood up, looking at the dilapidated city with a trace of emotion, "Once this coastal city was so prosperous, now it has become a ruin. What kind of person would want to annihilate humanity?"
Lin Wu replied, "Humans."
"Good answer, don’t answer next time."
About another hour passed, and Maya woke Lin Wu. He opened his eyes, "Sister, this isn’t home; it’s very uncomfortable to sleep like this."
"They’ve moved."
Lin Wu, somewhat reluctantly, picked up the Silencer and watched for a while. The zombies that had previously been standing on the road had disappeared, no clue where they had gone. Lin Wu asked, "A substitute zombie? Do they fill in when there’s a slot available inside the building?"
Maya used the Repeating Crossbow’s two-times scope but didn’t see any zombies moving. Lin Wu shifted the muzzle towards the hiding place of Sunlight; the fire was still there, and the four of them were each deeply asleep against it. Lin Wu said, "Pigs, not even knowing to bring a sleeping bag."
Maya commented offhandedly, "They have medicine."
"Right, the miracle drug." Lin Wu saw a zombie appear in the corridor on the second floor of their building, strolling towards them, about to pass their room. It was a challenging distance, but Lin Wu fired a shot, the bullet hitting the zombie’s chest. The zombie paused to look around. Lin Wu reloaded, "Missed."
Maya said, "A hundred meters, wind speed 3, considering the weight of the bullet, you should aim at the upper right corner of the zombie. Expand the head of the zombie, center it to create nine heads, and shoot at the upper right head."
