Chapter 172 - 125 Green Zombie
Chapter 172: Chapter 125 Green Zombie
Having passed the county boundary and reaching the big bridge, Lin Wu hopped off the truck bed and said to Maya who was dismounting, "At that time, we shouldn’t have chosen the Repeating Crossbow. We should have switched to the Left County System Map."
Maya faced a few zombies that were following the car and asked, "A map? There’s no map in the city hall. Where could there be a map?" The System Map of North Town had been obtained through scavenging at the town hall, and players who were revived at North Town could also get a copy of the System Map.
Leaning against the vehicle, Lin Wu said, "Nightmare."
"Where is she?"
Lin Wu did know the location of Nightmare’s safe house, but the safe house was unlikely to be the base. Dawn had said that Nightmare, as an agent of Fortress, had the same basic needs as players, meaning she needed at least a place to sleep. Based on Nightmare’s activity trajectory, she should be in the area between Left County and the mountaintop church.
Ask Shana? That was also possible. However, Shana had only identified herself to him and Stone. Since Shana did not wish to reveal her identity to others, Lin Wu wouldn’t share her secret with anyone else.
"I have a way to meet Nightmare, but can you accept it?"
"What way?"
Lin Wu said, "The dumb way."
Maya pondered, "Apart from the serum needles, we only have a few long spears to trade with others. Okay, let’s talk first, see what she wants."
...
An hour later, a large cloth banner was hung on a billboard by the roadside, with the message: Maya wants to meet Nightmare.
Maya looked up at the banner; this method was indeed clever—the highway was the only main artery in the surrounding area. But you couldn’t write: Nightmare, please come to the supermarket base. Or: Lin Wu wants to meet Nightmare.
Sliding down the billboard’s ladder, Lin Wu raised an eyebrow at Maya, "For everyone’s benefit, you might consider in advance how much you’re willing to sacrifice."
Maya couldn’t help but laugh and cry, "There’s nothing going on between her and me, don’t talk nonsense."
Lin Wu said, "I’m just reminding you of the possibility. The library is completed."
The library’s construction took 15 minutes, and after completion, it only housed two empty bookshelves. There were also two tables and four chairs, with a nuclear-powered kerosene lamp on each table. The most impressive addition was a library-equipped electric coffee maker.
Right, electric. No electricity? Then it didn’t move.
Near the library’s entrance was a small platform embedded with a tablet. Maya clicked around for a while and quickly mastered its operation; with the input of a book title, a new book appeared on the shelf. Lin Wu picked up the book and read, "The Count of Monte Cristo."
"Mine," said Maya, grabbing the book and sitting down.
Lin Wu reminded her, "Cement factory, serum, screams, sleeping, bounty tasks..."
Hearing Lin Wu say this, Maya closed the book with a reluctant sigh, "Ah..." This emotion was fleeting, and she said, "We’ll handle the tasks at the cement factory, then come back at dawn to deal with the screams before sleeping."
"You read first. I’ll clear out the zombies inside the supermarket, so you don’t wake up and see zombies first thing when you open the door." Lin Wu placed the Silencer on the left weapon rack and took an M16 from the right rack, leaving the library. He headed down the corridor to the supermarket, where thirty or so zombies were scattered, half inside the safety zone and half outside.
Lin Wu held his gun and approached within 3 meters, using Quick Gunner Lock Head to kill the zombies inside the safety zone. Then, at the edge of the safety zone, he targeted the other zombies with Quick Gunner. If he could get a headshot, he would; otherwise, he’d wait until they got close enough for a Lock Head headshot. It was indeed satisfying to use skills in the base, with hardly any need to worry about stamina.
The newly opened library had just started business, and to accommodate Maya’s interests, Lin Wu wandered around the safety zone for an hour, then sat down somewhere for half an hour before returning to the library.
...
The cement factory was still the same, and there were fewer zombies around. However, a new type of ordinary zombie had appeared.
Ordinary zombies were dried up and tattered, while Blood Plague zombies were blood-colored all over. Today, a new type of zombie with green skin appeared. It had grape-like green growths on its neck which glowed and pulsed, creating a visually uncomfortable effect that resembled pus-filled blisters (reference to XCOM 2).
The green zombies had strong awareness and a wider field of vision. When Maya saw the new type of zombie, she immediately conducted a data test; ordinary zombies would quick-walk, run at 25 kilometers per hour for 10 meters, and leap when they detected players. The green zombies did not quick-walk, they ran at roughly the same speed but without any distance limitation for their sprint.
After killing a green zombie, Maya said, "The real zombies have appeared." Although their attack power and other attributes were no different from other zombies, besides the continuous running, their ferocity exceeded that of ordinary zombies. Ordinary zombies were like machines following a set program, while green zombies were like rabid dogs, driven by a fierce, instinctual desire to attack.
Lin Wu said, "According to historical records, the reason humans have never been able to confirm the source of the zombie virus is that the United Nations concluded after investigating Fortress Company that they lacked the capability to produce a zombie virus. Therefore, even though the whole world suspected Fortress Company of creating the virus, there was never any evidence."
Lin Wu continued, "The biggest problem now appears with the green zombies. The DNA structure of ordinary and Blood Plague zombies is close to that of humans. The DNA structure of green zombies is vastly different from humans."
As he spoke, Lin Wu looted the corpse, pulling a note from the body of a green zombie with three grape-like growths: "If green zombies appear, please notify Fortress Company immediately, codename ’Steed’."
