Chapter 162: Chapter 121 System Update_2

"You..." How cute little bunnies are.

"I’m a Hunter, hunting is my job," Lin Wu said. "Tomorrow at 8 a.m., one ingredient for the Hunter will be in hand... Can we roast rabbit meat?"

Maya spread her hands, not knowing what to say.

Lin Wu didn’t have time to use the elevator to go downstairs, so he jumped straight down from the rooftop. At worst, it’d be a fracture, take a painkiller, lie down in bed, and that would be it, since roasting meat takes time anyway.

The rabbit’s body emitted a faint glow, just like herbs, belonging exclusively to someone. The system prompted Lin Wu that he needed Little Knife, so Lin Wu took out a dagger, and the system began skinning and cutting the meat. Lin Wu obtained a rabbit skin and a skinned rabbit.

Back at the base, Lin Wu started a fire, placed a grill over the campfire, set the rabbit on it, then went to the storage to get some seasonings. Lin Wu didn’t know how to roast meat, so he put a bit of every seasoning there was. Maya, lured by the scent, came down the elevator and shooed Lin Wu aside to skillfully roast the rabbit herself.

Some fifteen minutes later, Lin Wu, who was on the watchtower, ate the rabbit meat, drank tea, and said, "This update is purely a benefit."

As she ate, Maya said, "You’re wrong, this rabbit meat doesn’t have any system bonuses, nor does it fill you up, it’s just to satisfy a craving. We’ve wasted at least half an hour for a craving."

Lin Wu asked, "Wasn’t it worth it?"

After thinking for a moment, Maya said, "It was. Don’t mention it, the food we make ourselves tastes better than what the system chefs cook."

Lin Wu said, "We actually roast, Horse Soul just blindly roasts." The system chefs can make a table of dishes in five minutes, although edible, they can’t really be called tasty. The abalone made by the system isn’t even as good as the rice stir-fried by Horse Soul.

Maya reminded, "You said you were going out to scout for Blood Plague today."

Lin Wu looked at Maya, "Hey, with this weather, do you really have the heart to send me out?"

Maya answered, "What’s wrong with that?" As a guard soldier, she trained in extremely harsh conditions, and marching in cold rain was routine.

Lin Wu helplessly said, "I’ll go after I finish eating." Both of their missions involved killing Blood Plague zombies, Maya’s mission was to kill a hundred male Blood Plague zombies, Lin Wu’s mission was to kill Blood Zombies to obtain 20 bottles of blood essence. Relying on a 20% quantity meant it would take a very long time to complete the missions. Besides, both of them also wanted a place that could provide a stable, long-term output of Blood Plague zombies.

Radio: Stone calling Maya.

Maya picked up a rabbit leg and went downstairs to the radio, "Here."

Stone: "If you want to make serum, you’d better visit Invincible Base within the next three days. I’m worried it’ll snow in a few days, and then vehicles will have trouble moving."

"Got it," Maya disconnected and shouted upstairs, "Lin Wu, you can eat more when you come back, we still need to go get the ambulance and survey vehicle."

"Why is there so much to do every day?" Lin Wu grumbled as he left the sentry card, slid down the elevator to the base interior, put on a raincoat, and went out to work.

...

First, Lin Wu went to the Bridgehead Signal Tower, where last time he and Shana only scouted in the direction of Left County. This time he scoped out the suburbs of Left County. Left County and North Town are separated by a river, with a cement factory resting against the river on the left side, and then there’s a vast wilderness. On the right side are a supermarket base, Forest Park, hydroelectric power station, and a substation—endless mountains and forests.

Basing on the location described in the Nightmare, Lin Wu used a drone to pinpoint the location of the ambulance and the survey vehicle, then he started to search the area around the car graveyard, a place Lin Wu had not been to before.

The drone flew along the creek and the cement road to the entrance to the mountains, where there was a small farm. After observing for a while, Lin Wu found no Blood Mist. He recalled the drone and sent it over the cement factory. Clear views of Blood Mist were visible from above, and after confirming this, Lin Wu spent an hour searching the suburbs. The result was that aside from the cement factory, no Blood Plague was found nearby.

Lin Wu returned to the supermarket base to report to Maya and the two went to get the vehicles first. Nightmare indeed had a fondness for Maya, recommending two cars that were in relatively easy-to-reach spots. Without any incidents, it took them just 20 minutes to bring the vehicles back to the base.

What to do next? They could only go to the cement factory to kill zombies, level up, and complete tasks. But things were different now; due to Blood Plague zombies making up only 20% of the population, Maya couldn’t join in as she was at high risk of infection, and Lin Wu lacked the ability to confront zombies head-on. However, they quickly found a solution: Lin Wu would deal with Blood Plague zombies, male Blood Plague zombies were left to Maya’s composite crossbow, and female Blood Plague zombies were left to Lin Wu for task items.

Lin Wu’s monster farming efficiency was always low — using guns was faster, but each bullet fired was one less in his inventory.

"Huh?" Maya exclaimed in surprise, "My Agility has risen to one star."

Lin Wu asked in astonishment, "Aren’t you a Physical Strength-based character?"

Maya nodded, "Yes, that’s why I find it strange."

Lin Wu said, "That means the five main attributes can be trained."

Maya agreed, "The primary attribute levels up the fastest followed by the secondary attribute, while the other three gain experience more slowly."

Lin Wu had always used a small dagger and the Silencer; never using strength to pound zombies, making it impossible for his Strength to increase. He was too busy playing games every day, no time to read books or study, so his Intelligence could not increase. Willpower is more nebulous – even at Shana’s peak of Will and Agility, she only had two stars.

Stars can be understood as levels; the more you use an attribute, the more experience it gains. However, because primary and secondary attributes differ, the five main attributes level up at different speeds.

Maya was the big winner. Her swordsmanship could increase both Strength and Agility experience while also consuming Stamina, meaning her swordsmanship could raise experience in Strength, Agility, and Physical Strength. Lin Wu only had Agility on a daily basis, consuming Stamina only on the odd occasion when using skills, so his Physical Strength star was low; as for the other three attributes, they were at zero level.

What to do? Should he start hitting things with a pipe? While that would train both Strength and Physical Strength, Agility wouldn’t increase. After pondering for a moment, Lin Wu started pulling mobs. He used running to expend Stamina, drawing a dozen zombies to an obstacle where they would climb over, and he would execute them on the other side.

This monster farming and leveling method not only had high efficiency but also trained both Agility and Physical Strength. One new trick covers everything. Since he had chosen Agility and Physical Strength, he had to train those attributes.

The only downside was fatigue. Low Stamina would cause fatigue, but recovery was swift, something not many noticed. However, persistently low Stamina could make one feel unwell. Tired as he may be, it was still fun for Lin Wu, and after two hours, his Physical Strength rose to four stars. There wasn’t much difference between three stars and four stars in Physical Strength, almost indiscernible.

At Maya’s request, Lin Wu ran at the same speed and found that a four-star Physical Strength allowed him to run 3 seconds longer than with a three-star Physical Strength. Since his Stamina hadn’t increased, it could be inferred that the Stamina consumption for running had decreased.

Maya quite enjoyed discussing technical issues. She gave an example where Shana, although primarily Agility-based, was less agile than Lin Wu, which was evident from how fast they could cycle the bolt on a gun. However, since one was a rookie and the other a veteran, Maya had previously refrained from making any conclusions.

Why hadn’t Shana felt any change in her body’s movements after her revival? This was due to the 24-hour revival time, and the use of newbie equipment after revival that masked any physical deterioration from the loss of attributes.

While all this was Maya’s speculation, leveling up was definitely beneficial. Four hours later, Lin Wu’s Agility had risen to 11 stars, Maya’s Strength to 9 stars, and her Physical Strength was still 3 stars.

By then, the zombies around the cement factory had been completely cleared. Lin Wu, with the speed of the wind, entered the factory, pulling the inside zombies outside. Maya shot male Blood Zombies with the composite crossbow while Lin Wu dragged the rest to the barriers, and Maya retrieved the crossbow arrows. Once Lin Wu finished on his side, Maya pulled out a squad of zombies, Lin Wu killed female Blood Zombies and searched their bodies for quest items, and Maya fought off the rest as she retreated.

Back and forth, the two became more in sync. Soon, both Lin Wu and Maya had completed their bounty tasks, but unfortunately, after several hours of killing countless Blood Plague zombies, they hadn’t come across a single bottle of Serum. Because of an accidental infection, Maya had to use a Serum needle. For Serum, they had to target Blood Ferocious Ma.

To get the Serum, they had no choice but to go in hard.

With a thrown Molotov Cocktail, over twenty regular zombies, mixed with a Frenzy and two Blood Ferocious Ma chased after Lin Wu. Overwhelmed by the zombies’ fervor, Lin Wu and Maya couldn’t hold on, forcing Maya to retreat to the factory’s outer side, using the composite crossbow to snipe regular zombies first, prioritizing the slowest Screamer.

Seeing the situation spiraling out of control, Lin Wu, valuing his life, immediately picked up speed. Although he increased the gap from regular zombies, he couldn’t shake off the three Frenzy zombies in hot pursuit in the open field.
