Chapter 134: Chapter 108: Fortress Agent

The next target was the Blind Bat, a creature Maya couldn’t handle. Lin Wu, however, was an entity the Blind Bat couldn’t contend with, and soon, the Blind Bat was mercilessly killed by Lin Wu. The reason for using the term "mercilessly" is that, in order to allow Maya to clearly see and assess the Blind Bat’s defenses, Maya tested quite a few knives on it before it died. She even shot the Blind Bat three times in the limbs to test the effectiveness of firearms in causing dismemberment.

These three shots attracted the nearby zombies and also trouble. It’s as if this duo was always flirting with death. Unaware of the terrain, Maya’s movement speed was greatly constrained in the water. Coupled with the poor light of nightfall, she couldn’t quickly deal with the Screamer, resulting in the battle lasting 10 minutes.

After the fight, Lin Wu had a sudden idea, "What do you think about keeping a couple of Screamers in the supermarket?"

Maya was stumped by Lin Wu’s out-of-the-box thinking, and after mulling it over for a while, she replied, "Sounds interesting. What do you mean?"

Lin Wu said, "Screamers don’t have hands or teeth. They’re not offensive by nature. We could tie one up inside the supermarket with a piece of rope and seal its mouth with duct tape. When we need to farm monsters, we’ll just rip off the tape and let it scream."

After thinking it over for a while, Maya said, "Sounds doable. Let’s try it when we get back."

The two discussed the details of abducting a Screamer until they reached the waterfall, where Lin Wu realized his previous mistake – there was no cave behind the waterfall. There was a narrow path built along the mountain instead, circling around North Lake. Lin Wu had visited North Lake twice, but it was always at night, so he’d never noticed the path before.

Standing on the pathway looking over North Lake with the waterfall rushing down just meters away, Maya looked around and said, "Apart from what you said about a radio antenna or signal tower, there are no artificial traces here."

Lin Wu replied, "But there are Blind Bats."

This reason was enough to convince Maya, and the two followed the path ahead, moving towards the edge of North Lake. Lin Wu, with his keen eyes, said, "Look."

It was a zombie, a very ordinary-looking one, except that it was wearing a white lab coat. Zombies in lab coats were also common, mostly found in pharmacies and clinics.

The zombie’s offensive ability was quite ordinary; Maya dispatched it effortlessly, then rummaged through its body to retrieve a particularly unique item: an ID card. The ID card bore a name, a photograph, and a barcode.

Now more intrigued, the two began searching around the mountain side of North Lake and quickly discovered a path buried under dirt. It seemed like there was something beneath the dirt. Lacking tools, they used their hands to claw away the soil, popping a painkiller whenever their hands hurt. Soon, the two human-shaped excavators had unburied a circular iron door one meter twenty in height.

In front of the iron door was a wooden sign that read: "Geological survey dedicated tunnel, Dangerous, Please keep away."

The door wasn’t locked, and they pulled it open. Maya crawled in first. If there was danger, Lin Wu could run faster; if Maya was behind, she would block Lin Wu’s escape route.

The tunnel was circular and cramped, leaving them unable to stand, they could only kneel and crawl forward. Maya halted and looked back, "Look."

Lin Wu glanced to the upper left corner where an emergency exit sign was posted. Lin Wu said, "This isn’t a normal entrance; this is an emergency exit."

Maya nodded, "Hmm, looks like there’s more to this place."

After crawling 20 meters, they emerged from the passageway into a corridor three meters wide and five meters tall. The corridor had a marble floor with a red carpet running down the middle and well-decorated walls lined with beautiful wallpaper. If Lin Wu didn’t know they were inside a mountain, he might have thought they were in a hotel.

A few steps further, there was a large door to the left with an ID card reader beside it. The two didn’t hurry, continuing forward, soon finding a dining hall. The dining room had over 15 tables with a spacious kitchen. Until then, they hadn’t encountered any zombies.

Both received a system message simultaneously: Team quest, Explore area’s secrets, Answer questions, Quest duration two hours.

Lin Wu was quite excited, "Finally, a decent quest." Either being dragged by Amanda to a minefield or fighting little monsters for NPCs.

Maya found it interesting too, "Let’s get started."

They continued forward, and soon left the passageway and the mountain. They found themselves on a platform amidst the cliffs, which had two helipads. On one of the pads sat a scrapped helicopter, surrounded by several zombies wearing bulletproof vests and helmets, with the Fortress emblem printed on their backs.

Maya stood ten meters from the zombies and inquired, "What do you think?"

Lin Wu replied, "What if we take the helicopter back? Would Su Shi be crying, or crying? Haha." He pictured Su Shi tearfully contemplating this mammoth task: how long this would take to dismantle.

This response was completely unexpected for Maya, who couldn’t resist giving Lin Wu a curious glance, wondering how his mind worked. Feeling her gaze, Lin Wu blinked and thought, "Should I go or not? If I go, I’m just the one responsible for Corpse Looting. If I don’t, we don’t have much time."

Their thoughts not in sync, Maya didn’t want to explain too much – it was too tiring. She simply said, "Corpse Looting," and approached to start slashing.

But Maya found a formidable opponent. Her knife strikes were like tickling the zombie, inflicting almost no damage. Despite the flurry of strikes, the display was impressive but futile. She looked back at Lin Wu, who was mumbling to himself, "Do I go or not? I should go; I’m just supposed to loot bodies. If I don’t, we’re short on time."
