Chapter 112: Chapter 99 Fearless Duo_2
Peanut copied down the materials and the Invincible Base’s night shift trio happened to be returning from a delivery. Hearing there were guests, they immediately went to the infirmary. Inevitably, there were handshakes and pleasantries exchanged. In front of outsiders, Invincible didn’t talk about their own base’s issues, but did exchange gaming insights with Maya.
At the first opportunity, Peanut secretly told Invincible that Shadow had brought five bottles of serum. Invincible asked Peanut to prepare a few gasoline packs for Shadow to take back. The repair shop wasn’t lacking in cars, nor gasoline; their power generator’s daily consumption of two units of gasoline didn’t prevent them from having a full stock. By contrast, the mountaintop church lacked distinctive features in architecture.
Invincible asked about the Fishing Skill Book, which currently was the most stable source of food recognized by players. Just by this query, it was known that Invincible was considering replacing the level 2 fisherman. Lin Wu didn’t respond directly but mentioned that there had been fishing books a few days ago. However, the inventory of the warehouse was managed by Stone, and he didn’t know if there were any fishing books left.
Lin Wu, who loved to play, was not foolish. Such matters were better communicated between the two Bosses.
Invincible frowned upon receiving the material list that Peanut had transcribed, as upgrading the radio required a substantial amount of resources, mostly lacking in electronics components.
Invincible said goodbye and took his men back to work.
Peanut spoke about another problem at the Invincible Base. The resources in the vicinity of the base had been depleted, and their exploration area was expanding step by step. This problem was also present at North Town, and everyone had begun to notice the fishing book. After all, as long as food was ensured, they had the bare minimum for survival.
...
On the way back, Maya said to Lin Wu, "I want to set up a sub-base at the hydroelectric power station."
Lin Wu responded, "Oh?" Whether to establish a sub-base or not was a matter he hadn’t considered too deeply.
Maya explained, "Bai Ban’s efficiency today was low; because of the sentry card, they could only make one delivery. Setting out in the early morning, they only returned at night." The basic material packages couldn’t be stored at the outpost and had to be brought back to the base.
After establishing the sub-base, Bai Ban could trade basic material packages to the sub-base for storage. The sub-base would become a resource reserve.
Lin Wu asked, "What about sieging? If we siege during the day, it’s hard for our people to quickly pass the Sentry Card and reach the hydroelectric power station."
Maya replied, "That’s why we need to arrange for a number of combat personnel at the sub-base. We are ultimately short on people."
The night shift would go to the sub-base; with one fewer person watching over the base at night, they could only pull one person from Bai Ban to the sub-base. This would lead to a scenario where, if the Shadow Base was attacked during the day, it would not be possible for everyone to return to base within 10 minutes. Relying on Stone and Su Shi to defend the base was unrealistic.
Lin Wu said, "The more people, the more issues."
Maya asked, "Lin Wu, do you prefer a large team with dozens of people or a medium to small team with around 10 people?"
Lin Wu answered, "It doesn’t matter if the team is large or small. I just don’t like working with people I don’t like. Maya, you seem to have some ideas."
Maya asked, "How are Emerald Feather and Peanut?"
Lin Wu understood Maya’s intentions. She was thinking about poaching them, but with the current relationship between Invincible and Shadow, that was definitely not an option. Maya had noticed the internal problems within Invincible. If Invincible couldn’t quickly resolve internal matters, they would definitely struggle this winter. When Invincible eventually crumbled, they could rightfully absorb the necessary personnel.
Lin Wu said, "Besides Emerald Feather and Peanut, there’s also someone called Raccoon Cat who is not bad."
Maya asked, "The one about 1.6 meters tall, the only person at Invincible Base who uses heavy weaponry?"
Lin Wu nodded, "During the defense cooperation, I thought Raccoon Cat had a strong tactical sense."
Maya said, "No offense, but how can you tell that their tactical sense is strong?"
Lin Wu tilted his head to look at Maya, "You have another meaning. What you mean is, with my tactical literacy, how can I have any sense of tactics, right?"
Maya nodded, "Yes."
Lin Wu spoke speechlessly, "You could have kept that to yourself."
Maya held back a laugh, "I hadn’t said it before."
Lin Wu ignored her and said, "Raccoon Cat eh! Why is the tactical sense strong? During the fight against the Titan, everyone was a bit irrational, attacking the Titan as much as possible at what they perceived as a safe distance. Recalling that battle, Raccoon Cat was not far from me. Everyone else, including myself, was just standing and dealing damage, but he continually adjusted his position according to the Titan’s movements."
Maya nodded thoughtfully.
Lin Wu asked, "Isn’t Stone in charge of recruiting?"
Maya replied, "Stone judges character; I judge capability. After all, one Stone is enough for a base."
Lin Wu said, "When I get back, I’m going to file a complaint with Stone."
This sentence moved away from tactical issues and into the realm of chit-chat. Maya didn’t particularly pay attention to the line between them and went along with Lin Wu’s words, "There’s only one toilet, where do you suggest we put the extra stones?"
Lin Wu thought of the composting facilities on the farm, where no one really wanted to sit idly on a chair, so the chair became the Shadow Throne, a seat worthy only of Stone. Thinking of this, Lin Wu couldn’t help but laugh, "Well said," and extended his right hand.
Maya was taken aback, and Lin Wu also felt a bit embarrassed when he realized his actions. To spare Lin Wu further embarrassment, Maya reached out with her right hand for a high five, but Lin Wu had already quietly withdrawn his hand, leaving her to clap the air. Both of them looked at each other and couldn’t help but laugh together.
Maya was known for being amiable, but Little Knife and the others respected her more than anything. Without exaggeration, members of the base thought Maya was the hardest person to approach and interact with, talking to her only on official business. Lin Wu was different; from the beginning, he hadn’t shown the sort of respect to Maya that one might show toward a teacher, marked by distance and a barrier.
Shana was unanimously considered the easiest person to get along with, followed by Little Knife, then Stone. The rankings for Lin Wu, Soulless brothers, and Su Shi were not particular in order, and because Lin Wu often worked the night shift, his ranking was a bit lower comparatively.
...
The next morning at 6 a.m., Lin Wu and Maya left with the day shift team, their work ethic puzzled everyone.
Snow Egg asked, "Where are they going?"
"Don’t know."
"Stone."
Stone, sitting on the throne in the middle of the farm, turned his head upon hearing his name called. The day shift team approached the edge of the farm and asked, "Where did Lin Wu and Maya go?"
Stone answered, "They’re cutting down the Blood Plague. Do you want to come up and try? The view is nice from here."
"Thanks, but no need," Snow Egg queried, "Where are they cutting the Blood Plague?"
"The tunnel," Stone added, "They cut down more than a dozen Skill Books in one day and also brought back ten bottles of Serum."
At this point, Stone stepped down from the throne and walked out of the farm, "Folks, we need to figure something out, we can’t let these two team up."
"Why?" Little Knife asked.
Stone said, "On their first day of teaming up they’re cutting down the Blood Plague, what won’t they dare to do next?"
Shana said, "Boss Stone, there’s nobody else who can do what they do."
Stone was about to say something but suddenly ran toward the front hall, shouting as he went, "Maya, what are you doing with the Raider? Maya..."
Upon reaching the front yard, Maya and Lin Wu had switched from the motorcycle to a pickup truck. Maya was sitting in the truck bed checking the Raider, and when she saw Stone coming out, she greeted him proactively, "Good morning, good morning everyone."
Stone asked, "Where are you taking the Raider?"
Maya answered, "To kill a Titan."
"A Titan?"
Maya said, "Lin Wu and I have discussed it and think we can kill it."
Driver Lin Wu stuck his head out and said, "I happen to know where a Titan can be found."
Maya patted the hood of the truck, the vehicle started moving, and she waved goodbye to everyone.
Watching the pickup truck drive away, Little Knife expressed his sorrow, "They get all the good stuff and don’t include me."
Shana said, "I know where the Titan is, shall we go check it out?"
"Let’s go." Everyone was eager to try; they hadn’t even seen a Titan before, only heard about such creatures from Maya and Lin Wu.
Stone warned, "Don’t mess up their plan."
Shana said, "We won’t, there’s high ground near the Titan."
