Chapter 52 - 52 51 Earth Bear_1
52: Chapter 51, Earth Bear_1 52: Chapter 51, Earth Bear_1 The unsatisfactory conclusion of the dispute rendered the Fifth Army the biggest loser.
Despite engaging in a violent and bloody battle, they were clueless about what the spoils of war looked like before they were destroyed.
After tallying the losses, everyone was noticeably unsettled.
The casualties among the serf soldiers were of little concern, but those among the nobles could not be ignored.
Seven injured, three crippled, and eight killed—the noble military officers were almost reduced by a quarter.
Any ordinary war fought to this extent would have surely collapsed by now.
Had Hudson not reacted quickly and unsparingly adopted the human sea tactics, the fate of the Fifth Army would have been even more tragic.
Even though Earl Piers assured that previous matters wouldn’t be investigated further and that the kingdom would not forget their merits, the crowd was far from pleased.
The heavy casualties faced by the Fifth Army made the stolen items seem insignificant.
Dwelling on it any longer would be contrary to human decency.
There were devastating losses among noble military officers, and the elite private armies saw even greater casualties.
Their numbers had dwindled from over seven hundred to less than four hundred.
Such devastating losses, part of which was due to their inability to retreat, found them pushed to the front lines by serf soldiers.
Nearly every noble who participated in the war suffered heavy losses.
It wouldn’t be possible to recover fully within less than three to five years.
As Hudson looked at the string of cold figures, he became more low-key.
Even in the division of the spoils of war, he had symbolically acquired just two war horses and three sets of armor.
There was no other way, the spoils of war were scarce.
The weapons were destroyed in the chaos of the battlefield.
If not for Hudson, they might not have been able to save even those few dozen horses.
With such little loot, there wasn’t much to quarrel about.
To display noble dignity, they had to leave something for their deceased comrades, leaving even less for everyone else.
Putting sentiment aside and after handling all the necessary tasks, Hudson quickly returned to his camp to tally his gains.
There was no shame in it; hiding spoils of war wasn’t his exclusive right.
Almost all the participating soldiers did it as long as they weren’t caught.
Opening a box, he found it full of potions.
Opening another box, there were still potions, which almost drove Hudson to the brink of despair.
He didn’t dare to use these mysterious potions of unknown efficacy, nor could he trade them.
His intuition told him that these things were of no value.
The appearance of boxes full of the same items made Hudson wonder if the Continent of Aslante had entered the industrial era.
After praying to all the divine spirits, Hudson hopefully opened the third box.
This time, it wasn’t a mysterious potion, but a sleeping magical beast juvenile.
From the aura it exuded, Hudson could tell it was a high-grade creature, a treasure that is a once-in-a-lifetime find for both knights and magicians.
Hudson failed to understand why the Clergy would give such a precious item to the rebel army.
It had a high nose, small face, good skin, broad shoulders, a round waist, attractive figure and radiated cuteness all over — at first glance, it clearly belonged to aristocratic family of bears.
If it weren’t for the lack of black circles around the eyes, black ears, black limbs, a black collar, and a limited edition brown skin, Hudson would have thought it was a panda.
Hudson couldn’t help but wonder whether a panda had derailed or a brown bear had cheated, and this was the outcome.
Either way, he didn’t feel this was a proper bear.
According to his poor knowledge and some legendary stories, Hudson determined that this creature was indeed the famous Earth Bear.
It was hard for him to connect the king of the land mentioned in the legends with the cute creature in front of him.
Perhaps as a result of expired magical potions or maybe because it had slept enough, the awoken Earth Bear stretched lazily, glanced around the environment, rubbed its eyes in disbelief, then looked angrily at Hudson.
Before Hudson could respond, a voice invaded his mind: “Human, I know you’re involved in this!
Hurry and send me, Mr.
Belsden, back home, or I’ll eat you for dessert!”
Psychic communication was an inherent talent of high-order demon beasts, their intelligence was not inferior to humans.
Legends say sacred beasts could directly converse with humans.
If it weren’t for the numerous members of the magical beast species being a part of the food chain with constant internal struggles, and with no possibility of unification, humans would not be the reigning species on the continent.
Looking at the charming bear cub waving its claws at him, Hudson felt anything but affectionate.
The title of ‘King of the Continent’ was not for nothing.
Even the juvenile of a magical beast was no match for a minor knight like Hudson.
Without hesitation, Hudson quickly started to coax: “Honored Mr.
Belsden, it is my pleasure to welcome you as a guest in my camp.
However, don’t you really remember how you ended up here?”
Seemingly recalling something after surveying the surroundings, the bear cub, who was initially ready to teach the human in front of him a ‘lesson’, suddenly withdrew its claws.
Good bears don’t eat nearby losses, and his ancestors’ inherited memories reminded him not to cause trouble in the humans’ camp as it would end up badly.
“I seemed to have slept, and when I woke up, I was here.
Damn human boy, quickly tell Uncle Bear what’s going on?”
Hudson really wanted to rush forward and beat the bear’s fur upon hearing these words, but his rationality told him that he shouldn’t go looking for trouble.
Despite its charming appearance, the Earth Bear was always tough in a fight.
A mature Earth Bear could even stand up to a giant dragon.
“Mr.
Belsden, is this how you treat the one who saved your life?
If it weren’t for me, you would have been a sacrifice to the evil god!” Hudson said, keeping a straight face.
No matter what, he was determined to take on the role of the savior of the bear.
The Earth Bear in front of him had clearly just been born and was not mentally mature, making it the perfect target for persuasion.
To tame such a high-ranked magical beast as a mount was a temptation no knight could resist.
Hudson felt that he was still young and not ready to give up.
The opportunity came knocking at the door, and he had to try his best.
“Is that so?
Thank you!
Since you’ve been so kind, do me a favor and take uncle Belsden home.
This time, I won’t hold a grudge against you.”
Upon hearing the bear cub’s reply, Hudson was nearly moved to tears.
Who claimed that magical beasts were simple?
The cub in front of him was clearly trying to bully the nice guy.
“No problem.
We are in the Southeastern Province of Alpha Kingdom.
May I ask where Mr.
Earth Bear resides?
After the war, I will send someone to escort you home,” Hudson immediately promised.
There’s no way he could send him back, but buying some time was the reality.
The places in the Continent of Aslante where Earth Bears lived were few and far between, with the nearest one being thousands of miles away from the Southeastern Province and densely populated places along the way.
For a junior Earth Bear to safely pass through was practically impossible.
If it wouldn’t get caught and turned into a magical pet, it would be cut into pieces and used for magical alchemy items.
