Chapter 85: Which CIA is Targeting Us?

We had concluded that the two cell phone monitors that were sending a live feed to various locations were both CIA. One was sending his call to the US Embassy in Guatemala. That was an obvious one, especially since we had already identified Pablo Rodriguez. The new Assistant to the US Ambassador to Guatemala as being CIA Field Agent Raul Vargas.

The other man was routing his signal to a chain of encrypted servers which were then accessed by several United States government locations that we believed tied to the CIA and the NSA.

We believed both to be low level assets recruited within Guatemala at some previous time, we were not overly concerned with them, but rather with those receiving their feeds and the origin of the orders to collect it. Even more concerning, was the fact that the attackers we had captured outside the same meeting appeared to be covert CIA contractors.

Because the gunmen’s planned attack would have killed the two CIA assets streaming the meeting back to CIA locations outside the country, we suspected that there were rogue or at least separate operations going on. Our best hypothesis was that some high-level person or group within the CIA had been intertwined with the drug cartels and, for whatever, reason, wanted the flow of drugs through Guatemala to continue. Whether this was because they were bribed, blackmailed, or threatened by cartels or because they were charging the cartels for protection and using that money to fund other off-the-record projects that had no official funding, we didn’t know.

Either way, the mercenary group of CIA contractors had been set in motion by a phone call from the cartel compound as our high-tech operation to destroy them was closing in. Our goal had been to figure out which side various CIA groups were on, whether they knew about separate elements within the organization, and whether the planned attacks on Rafael, Maribel, and Guatemala in general were officially sanctioned activities.

We didn’t want an active conflict with the CIA and the United States at this point. If we could separate the attackers and those who planned it from official government activities, then we had some leverage to act without escalating any official confrontation.

Joe also found evidence of sophisticated surveillance and information gathering in Peru trying to unwind Maribel’s history and her mysterious, extremely wealthy father. Of course, since he didn’t really exist and was a construct of our advanced AI breaking into various records archives and planting a history, we knew they’d run into dead-ends eventually if their abilities were any good at all. This would lead them to conclude that the Flores family was a cover for Maribel’s real identity. Given her access to technical and financial resources, as well as her ability to reach into official archives in several countries, they would conclude that she was involved with a state-actor, some unidentified nation with a sophisticated intelligence network and capabilities. If it wasn’t the USA, and it was making huge interventions in the Americas, they would be likely to conclude that whoever it was, it was a potential threat to US interests.

Given all that, we weren’t sure we could avoid entering into a direct if clandestine hostile engagement with the CIA and whatever other forces or agencies they chose to commit.

I tell you this because it’s important to know our mindset as we briefed President Arroyo and requested his assistance in the matter. That was the backdrop to our planned meeting with him that evening.

Joe had reconstructed an imprinted personality for Maribel/ Mom that she would use as she led the meeting. She would be Maribel, but would also remember herself as Susan Bailey, with full knowledge of our real goals of eventually uniting all Earth governments under our banner so we could focus on longer term and more subtle threats from the Galactic Union and other space-faring empires. She would retain full knowledge of the source and capabilities of our advanced alien technology, but the personality, temperament, and behavior patterns of her new persona Maria Isabel Flores who went by the shortened appellation, Maribel.

At 6:55 PM, Mom had been imprinted with the new modified Maribel persona and was sitting in the HoloDeck which had been set up as a formal office. There was a window on the side wall, barely visible in the video feed that would be transmitted to the other attendees of the meeting. The view from the window was actually that from and office building in Lima, Peru. The signal would also originate from an office tower there, courtesy of our alien interdimensional quantum computing artificial Intelligence, Joe Torres.

Dad and I sat in the Status Room, watching incoming and outgoing feeds. We had the ability to have Joe communicate silently to Maribel during the meeting with any of our thoughts or any new information that became available during the meeting.

"Ready for the show, Mom?" I asked to test the connection.

She smiled and nodded to the camera location in front of her completely simulated desk.

"Two minutes to go before we are in a live call, I have a connection set up with the President’s Secretary, who will also be attending. I’ll activate a green light when I switch our end of the feed to your office, Maribel," Joe said aloud in both rooms at once.

I looked at Dad beside me in the Status room, "This will be interesting," I said.

"Yes, it will," he answered with a smile. "I think we’ve done a good job of putting all our ducks in a row, though."

"Ducks? I didn’t know there’d be ducks. I’m crying fowl!" I said, trying not to laugh.

Dad just shook his head, but I could tell he thought it was funny, and I suspected he’d use that line later. It was his kind of humor.

"Ten seconds," Joe informed us, then, "three, two one." In front of Maribel in the simulation room, a green light winked on. A display in front of her and another in front of us just one room away showed President Arroyo seated at a meeting table. His secretary was seated at a smaller table in the background behind him. To his left was Gabriel Morales, the President of the Supreme Court of Guatemala, and to President Aroyo’s left was Alejandro Hernandez, The current President of the Congress from the President’s own political party, Movimiento Semilla.
