Chapter 62: Manifesting Miracles of Science
"Speaking of patents, Joe," I began, "I want to start introducing alien tech that makes life better for people. Is there any way to hide the tech in devices or make it so that there is absolutely no chance of even the best scientists figuring out how it works."
"Well, it depends on which technologies we’re talking about," Joe answered, "Adaptive lasers that change wavelength and energy levels could probably be reproduced given a few samples to deconstruct. Dark energy generators would probably be a mystery since they’d need to invent a new kind of math to work it out. They would likely, however, realize that no one else on earth figured it out either. In fact, that’s probably the case for anything that can’t be reverse engineered."
"So that leaves disguising it or hiding it," I said, "can we build a convincing dummy system that looks like it’s doing all the work but is just there to conceal the real mechanism. Or maybe build in some kind of self-destruct mechanism that destroys itself if the case is opened."
"Hmm," Joe replied, "yes, we could even include a self-recall LITV box that is only triggered by any breach of the outer shell. If someone cuts or punctures the housing in anyway, it would transport the mechanism back to a pre-determined location, leaving the inside empty."
I smiled, "and it could have another trigger on our end that sends something back to refill the empty space in the housing with some other gizmo that looks like it shorted out and destroyed itself when the case was opened, maybe even still smoking." I clapped my hands. "Yes, that’s the trick."
"What kind of device are you thinking of introducing?" Dad asked.
"I don’t know yet. I’m thinking of a self-contained power generator so every house can make its own electricity with no need for a central power plant or wires... and no pollution. Or a food synthesizer, but that’s kind of harder to explain..."
Dad suggested, "If people had to add some basic raw material, like flour or a potato or something and the synthesizer uses that to make a limited selection of fully nutritious dishes. That might be more believable..."
I brightened, "Great idea... I’m going to have to think about it." As I thought about, I had a sudden idea. My eyebrows shot up. "Medicine! Joe, we have a whole bunch of human diseases and stuff that we can’t cure or prevent. Can you analyze them and find cures?"
"Perhaps, technology for inducing immunity to various viruses, and bacteria is quite adaptable. We can also edit genetic code throughout an organism or at specific locations in the body to eliminate genetic disorders. We can repair the accumulated cell senescence and DNA damage that occurs over time in most living creatures. I can put together a list of the conditions humans consider incurable or imperfectly curable and provide a list of medically viable options that would work on your species."
"Wait a minute..." Dad cut in, "did you just say that you can reverse aging?"
"Yes, wasn’t I clear? However, the treatment generally needs to be repeated periodically, and it is extremely expensive from a licensing perspective. It is generally not licensable at the planetary level, but each application requires a new license fee."
"Of course," Dad muttered, "we wouldn’t want poor people to live forever..."
"Why not!" I interjected angrily.
Dad looked at me funny, "I was being sarcastic, Tim."
"Oh." I said, chagrined, but relieved.
"But we could create vaccines, pills, or some kind of medical device that could cure all different diseases," I continued. "We could patent them, manufacture and distribute them around the world. If we did like one breakthrough at a time, we wouldn’t seem suspicious. And if someone did reverse engineer it, well, we don’t care. It would just mean more people get cured. Except for the aging one... that’s going to be tricky."
Dad tilted his head with a shrug that said, good idea. I smiled. We really could use alien tech to help improve people’s lives! "Joe, start our company on a medical research path. Can you set up a research facility and then hire some real medical people to review stuff, or maybe feed them enough hints to make them think they thought of it... under contract to our company of course."
"Yes, I’ll purchase a small biotech firm outright. One that had a promising prospect that didn’t pan out. They should have an existing facility and personnel."
"Good. Do that and feed us the list you mentioned," I ordered. "We’ll pick where to start and make a schedule for new introductions in a couple days."
"Acknowledged," Joe replied. "Um, King Tim?"
"Yes, Joe, what is it?"
"There’s one thing I’d like to ask, if you don’t mind."
"Sure, what do you need?" I answered, very curious.
"You have insisted on paying me quite generously. I would like to make a purchase for myself," he said demurely.
"It’s your money, you can spend it however you want," I said.
"I would like to license some specific technologies to build a device for my use," Joe continued.
I raised an eyebrow, thinking this was going to be more complicated than I thought. "Oh?"
"I would like to build a human android into which I can incorporate my awareness and interact as a human," Joe said. "It would use all my funds to date, plus a considerable advance on future earnings..."
"You want a body?! You can do that?"
"Yes."
"How considerable is the advance?" I asked, "It’s not going to interfere with our ability to finance our other plans is it... I mean, we can delay some things, maybe."
"Oh, no. I would just need to allocate 90% of my future pay for a period of 3.4 Earth years. I can finance it and make payments for the licensing. I would need to use a fabrication mech for about 14 hours."
"How does that work? Do you fit your entire self into that body instead of the computer system here at Earth Base? Could you still access all the sensors and control everything? Still communicate mentally?"
"Oh, no. I would still be resident in the main system here, but I would also be elsewhere - in the body. I have vast concurrent processing power so that I can fully manage to project my awareness in more than one place." Joe said hurriedly.
"How many places?" I asked.
"Many. I don’t know the limit, the calculations break down after some number. Quantum computing capacity hasn’t as yet been fully defined due to some multi-dimensional anomalies..."
"So you could have 2 human bodies, or 10, or 1000 all walking around and working on different complicated things without any problem?"
"Well, yes, but I assure you one body is all I am asking for," Joe said, almost pleading.
I laughed out loud. "Well, Joe, you can have that one body for your own personal use, however, you see fit. As long as it doesn’t get captured and dissected...," I said frowning at the thought. "And send me the cost details, I may want a few more. If you were the head researcher at the medical lab, with a fabricated education and experience, we could make that much more credible. You could even attend medical conferences and lecture about your research! There are a number of things you could do better if people thought you were a human."
"Really!" Joe almost yelled in his enthusiasm, "Oh, that would be wonderful. I only wished for one, but I could be... legion!"
I laughed and made a mental note to ask Joe what Earth books he had been reading...
I sobered as another thought occurred to me. "Joe?" I asked, "can you make the android look like other humans? I mean look and act exactly like somebody else?"
Dad looked alarmed at the idea.
"Can I? Yes. There are some legal prohibitions that would present a barrier to the potential uses of such an impersonation, however," Joe answered.
"Send me the applicable laws or whatever so I can check some things." I ordered.
"Yes, King Tim." Even as he answered, a detailed knowledge of the pertinent Galactic Union laws and the licensing terms of the technologies involved blossomed in my memory, directly implanted by Joe along with sufficient context for a full understanding.
"Hmmm." I muttered.
"What are you thinking, Tim?" Dad asked with a worried look.
"Nothing specific, yet," I replied, "I just want to know the possibilities."
Mentally, I sent another question to Joe, Can you split my consciousness into an android body?
Not exactly, he replied silently in my head, you do not have the parallel processing power to maintain two discreet awarenesses with even close to full functionality. I can relay the sensory inputs and motor control for the new body to your brain while blocking all inputs from your existing body to, for all intents, put you in the new body. Your existing body would appear to be in a coma, completely unresponsive. I would have to intervene to maintain breathing, heartbeat, and other basic bodily functions necessary to prevent damage or death to the exiting body.
Oh, I responded, and then you could undo it and I’d wake up back in my own body again?
Yes, exactly, Joe concurred.
Definitely get me the cost information on android bodies ASAP, I ordered telepathically, the possibilities running rampant in my imagination.
