Chapter 204: Chapter 204: The Ins and Outs and the Universal Light of Buddha
Wei River Dragon Palace.
Sun Wukong, disguising himself as Ananda, sat in the seat of honor.
"Thank you, Supreme One, for your timely rescue." Wu De Star Lord and Weihe Dragon King respectfully saluted from below.
"How could you be so careless? Someone came so close without your knowledge!" Sun Wukong questioned, "Tell me, what exactly happened?"
"Supreme One, it was my fault," Wu De Star Lord said. "Not long ago, in accordance with your arrangement, I reported to His Majesty the Jade Emperor that Jing River Dragon King had arbitrarily changed the timing of rainfall, causing the flood in Chang’an City,
His Majesty originally planned to send me down to capture Jing River Dragon King, but unexpectedly, Ziwei Great Emperor Sun Wukong appeared with his disciple Ao Lie before the Jade Emperor, then indicated there was more to this affair and said that he would personally investigate on earth.
His Majesty then let them join me on earth. Knowing this was not good, after all, Ziwei Great Emperor is not only powerful but also skilled in investigation.
Thus, after descending to earth, I took the opportunity to inform Weihe Dragon King, to prevent us from being exposed.
But I never expected Ao Lie to be so vigilant, following us all the way here.
Fortunately, the Supreme One appeared in time and subdued him."
"Appeared in time?" Sun Wukong sneered, "This is a big problem. With the disciple gone, Sun Wukong will not let this rest easily!"
Wu De Star Lord and Weihe Dragon King exchanged glances, their expressions solemn and slightly panicked.
"Please, Supreme One, save us!" the two implored again with respect.
"I will ask my brother Jia Ye to intervene and make this true dragon convert to our Buddha Sect," Sun Wukong continued, "As for you, think carefully, have you leaked anything to outsiders?"
"Rest assured, Supreme One," Wu De Star Lord said, "Other than Ao Lie, absolutely no other outsider knows the real reason for Jing River Dragon King’s disappearance."
"Good," Sun Wukong nodded, then said to Weihe Dragon King, "Another thing, my brother Jia Ye wants you to cause another rainfall on the day of the scripture chanting ceremony, to help create momentum for the event."
"This..." Weihe Dragon King hesitated, "Supreme One, last time with Jing River Dragon King also causing rainfall, no one paid attention to me. If this time I cause rain alone, won’t it expose the previous..."
"Don’t worry, even if the Jade Emperor saw it, he wouldn’t say anything," Sun Wukong said with a smile, his mind grasping how these two had framed the Jing River Dragon King.
"Indeed," Wu De Star Lord agreed with a smile. "Actually, His Majesty did not want to delve into Jing River Dragon King’s disappearance. A death sentence was promptly declared. If not for Ziwei Great Emperor Sun Wukong intervening, the matter would have been settled quickly."
Only then did Weihe Dragon King relax.
Afterward, Sun Wukong left Wei River Dragon Palace, still in the guise of Ananda, accompanied by the two to see him off.
Once in a wilderness outside of Chang’an City, he released Ao Lie.
"You damn bald donkey, if you dare... Ah, Master?" Ao Lie cursed, but the next moment, he saw the plump monk before him transform into his master, the Great Sage Equalling Heaven, Monkey King.
"Heh, you did well this time," Sun Wukong praised.
"If Master had arrived a bit later, I could have caught those two thieves!" Ao Lie boasted without modesty.
"It’s no good without evidence," Sun Wukong said with a smile.
Ao Lie immediately understood his master’s meaning; Wu De Star Lord and Weihe Dragon King could easily deny everything afterward. Without evidence, just his own sight and hearing wouldn’t be enough.
"Now tell me, how did they frame your uncle?" Sun Wukong asked further.
"Reporting to Master," Ao Lie hastened to say, "My uncle did indeed recently receive an order to cause clouds and rain in and around Chang’an. Then Wu De Star Lord came to him, asking him to alter the timing of the rainfall. My uncle refused,
but Wu De Star Lord’s pestering delayed him from making it rain on time, and when my uncle went to do it, Weihe Dragon King happened to be causing rain as well, resulting in the flood disaster in Chang’an."
"Just as I thought," Sun Wukong said, scratching his head. This was in line with what he had surmised.
Afterward, he returned alone to the Land Temple, while Ao Lie went elsewhere.
Not long after, Wu De Star Lord came back, claiming that he had been out with nothing to do and had gone to check on the flood outside the city.
Seeing that Ao Lie had not returned, Sun Wukong pretended to be angry, declaring that he must punish this disciple.
Wu De Star Lord continuously tried to soothe and speak well of Ao Lie.
Once Sun Wukong’s anger abated, he then suggested going to the Jing River Dragon Palace to investigate.
Sun Wukong did not refuse, but when the two of them went to investigate, they found nothing.
And after such effort, the time had come for the Buddhist chanting ceremony that day.
...
In the depth of night, the dim night sky was devoid of any starlight.
As the Buddha Sect’s chanting ceremony was held in the dead of night, the Emperor of the Great Han temporarily lifted the curfew of Chang’an City, which brought a large number of the Human Race to the White Horse Temple.
In the temple courtyard, there were members of the royal family of the Great Han dynasty, nobles, and high-ranking officials.
Outside in the streets and alleys were the ordinary citizens of the Human Race.
No matter their status, there was expectation in their eyes, and many were even fervent.
The White Horse Temple, having been established for two years, was reputed to grant whatever was asked for, and naturally, it had a fair number of zealous believers.
And lately, the floods in Chang’an had been catastrophic, with the people in dire straits.
When the citizens learned that the efficacious White Horse Temple was going to pray for the Human Race and ferry the souls of those who perished in the disaster, they were full of hope and immensely grateful to the monks.
At this moment, a high platform had been erected in the White Horse Temple’s courtyard.
Jia Ye, adopting the name of the high monk She Moteng, sat cross-legged upon it with his eyes closed in silence.
The flickering fires and candlelights around him gave everyone in the Human Race a feeling of an indescribable power.
The monks inside the temple recited in hushed tones, their chants resonating in waves throughout Chang’an City, reaching into the hearts of every member of the Human Race.
Suddenly, Jia Ye opened his eyes and his gaze swept over a corner of the temple, confirming everything was in order before turning his attention to the people of the Human Race who had gathered from all directions.
"Amitābha, well said, well said," Jia Ye intoned the name of Buddha, and his lean figure produced a loud and commanding voice that struck at the soul of every person present.
"The Buddha said, all living beings are in suffering, all phenomena are intrinsically empty, one must deliver oneself, yet our Buddha, in compassion, acknowledges the suffering of all beings, and today especially holds this ceremony, shouldering the burden of suffering for oneself, to alleviate the calamities of all beings!"
"Amitābha!" The monks of the White Horse Temple chanted the Buddha’s name in unison.
Dong!
A bell toll rang out, and instantly, golden light shone forth.
The circle of golden aura emerged behind Jia Ye’s head and dazzling, fierce golden light emanated from him, while a gigantic image of the Buddha coalesced above Chang’an City, illuminating every direction.
It turned night into day!
This miracle sent the Human Race citizens, who had only heard of such myths and had never seen immortals, into a frenzy.
"Amitābha!"
"The Buddha has manifested!"
"We are saved, the flood will be resolved!"
"Great merciful and compassionate Buddha, please save us!"
Inside and outside Chang’an City, countless members of the Human Race knelt on the ground, some even weeping bitterly, all devoutly chanting the Buddha’s name, and a thin layer of Buddha light emerged on each of them.
In that moment, they felt as if the fatigue and illnesses that plagued them had vanished completely.
This miraculous effect convinced more people of the Human Race, causing them to kneel in worship.
At this time, it was not only Chang’an City, but all surrounding areas affected by the flood saw those who had ever chanted the name of Buddha now glowed with golden light.
Looking into the distance, one could see spots of Buddha light appearing in towns and villages.
Then these lights of the Buddha converged, and above each place, a slightly smaller image of the Buddha took shape.
The light of the Buddha shone upon all, ferrying those with karmic connections.
These thoughts appeared in the minds of every person upon whom the Buddha light rested.
