Chapter 206: I guess we’ll have to apologize and explain our reasons

The twins, still taken aback by Dongwoo’s reaction, stared at each other anxiously.

"Did we take it too far?" Seojin asked.

"It would appear so." Seojun responded and sighed. "I didn’t think he would react that way. I thought we would all have a good laugh once he realized it was a prank."

"Hm, maybe we should’ve left out the blood part." Seojin said, starting at the ketchup they had spilled. "Sigh, it seems Hyung also doesn’t remember this."

"I don’t think even with this he’ll be able to remember that today is our birthday at all. It’s been so long, he might not even know why we scared him." Seojun said, and they both fell silent.

Their birthdays weren’t exactly events that they cared for or celebrated in the past. The only time someone wished them a happy birthday and it actually felt special, was, you know it, when Dongwoo was with them.

Honestly, since they met him, their whole world and all their likes began to revolve around him and him alone.

The birthday they spent with Dongwoo felt like a regular day, with no surprises, no special decorations, and no cake either. So Dongwoo said this,

"Birthdays shouldn’t be like this. My grandma said that if there’s nothing at all, there should at least be a cupcake. But your father is rich so he should be able to buy you a cake."

And to this, the twins responded,

"It doesn’t matter. We don’t care anyway. It’s just like a plain old day to us."

Dongwoo stared at the two and felt sorry for them.

"Your birthday is a special day because that’s the day that you were born. And if anyone, who claims to care for you, forgets it, forgets to wish you a happy birthday, then you should give them a good scare. That’ll teach em not to forget your special day."

"But the only person who cares for us is you, Hyung." Seojin pointed out.

Dongwoo knew that their father didn’t care for them the way a normal father would, and the people, the servants, and cleaners did not care for them either, so they might’ve felt neglected.

"Well, since it’s just me," he smiled, "...it’s all the more reason to scare me back to my senses. That’ll teach me a lesson. Since I’m the only one who cares for you," he scuffled their hair, smiling widely. "Then I should never forget, right?"

The twins were just doing according to what he said in the past. But maybe they shouldn’t have followed the words of the younger Dongwoo.

It had been so long so it wouldn’t have been a surprise if he forgot about it. Yet, they just wanted to give him a little scare and then laugh it off. They didn’t want to hurt him or his feelings.

It made them feel bad but they were in the wrong there.

"Then..." Seojin said, "I guess we’ll have to apologize and explain our reasons."

"I’ll clean this up first." Seojun said and Seojin nodded. He headed in to get the cake they had bought on their way.

Dongwoo angrily tore off the decorations. He wanted to hear their explanation but he was just too angry to leave things as they were. The effort he put in, he decided to leave them all wasted.

He tore off the decorations, burst the balloons in anger, and shifted everything to the side. Then, he hugged his knees on the couch, crying.

As soon as he tore off the decorations, he started to regret it, thinking about all sorts of things.

What if the twins didn’t even remember that today was their birthday?

They never had anyone to care for them so they might’ve forgotten over the years.

They didn’t like their mother either so there was definitely no one to wish them a hearty happy birthday and give them gifts as well as set up a surprise like this.

But that prank... Why would they do that?

Even if it wasn’t their birthday, why would they pull a prank that practically pulled on his heartstrings? It didn’t make sense.

They were obedient and always did things with his interest at heart.

"Is it Halloween?" He wondered but shook his head. "No, it’s May 17. It’s not Halloween. So why?"

It just didn’t make sense.

Knowing that he put in so much effort to surprise them on a birthday they didn’t even remember made him feel good but then remembering what they did made him feel a whole lot worse.

He even wore such an uncomfortable and embarrassing outfit just for them. And yet what do they do as soon as they get home? They scare the daylights out of him with fake kidnapping news and fake blood.

Then, he heard his doorbell ring.

"Who is it?" He yelled but there was no answer. "Ugh, I forgot the soundproof function."

He reluctantly got up him the couch and went to the intercom.

"Who is it?" He asked.

"Hyung," he heard Seojin’s voice and flinched. No, he was mad at them. This was no time to be flinching at their voice.

"Go away. I don’t want to see you." He said which broke their hearts.

Silence followed and he wondered if they left but then Seojun spoke,

"It’s okay, you don’t have to see us." He said, but that was when Dongwoo knew he would turn on the camera to see their faces in front of his door.

"What did you want? I’m pretty sure you had your fun when you scared me shitless." He said but they shook their heads.

"No, it wasn’t fun."

"You sure? I can still remember you two smiling when I was very much horrified. If that wasn’t fun for you then why did you do it?"

They went silent, biting their lips as they lowered their heads in guilt.

Dongwoo also bit his lip. They told him to stop doing that as it would become a habit, but this time, they started it, and he subconsciously followed, feeling complex emotions with their appeal like that.

He could only see their faces and shoulders and couldn’t tell if they had anything in their hands.

’This is getting hard.’ Dongwoo thought. His feelings were getting swayed by their guilty poses. "If... If you’re not going to say anything then..."

"We thought you forgot." Seojun said, refusing to raise his head. "We thought you didn’t remember what today was and so we decided to scare you, just like you asked us to."

Dongwoo was lost. When did he ask them to scare him? No, they... Did they remember what today was?

"You... What’s today’s date?" He asked and they both chorused.

"And what is today supposed to be?" He asked further and they finally raised their heads, showing sadness that even the little cam could pick up.

"Our birthday."
