Chapter 76: Not Giving Up

When they stopped after three hours of non-stop driving, Helena tried to talk to Alphonse, but instead, her friend held a hand up and shook his head.

"I need space," he told her.

"Are you leaving us here?" Helena asked, worried that she’d just lost not only her friend but also their chance of making it to a safe city.

Alphonse didn’t answer her at first.

He kept his eyes on the woods in the distance.

Helena understood his need to run to clear his mind, she was the same way, it was one of the many things they’d bonded over.

"I won’t leave you," Alphonse finally said. "But I need to think Helena. I can’t have you bombarding my senses at every moment. I need to think."

Helena nodded.

"I’m sorry," Helena finally said as Alphonse began to walk away.

He looked back at her and nodded.

"We’ll talk more when we get home," he said before running off to the woods.

With Alphonse disappearing into the treeline, Rae reached for Helena’s hand and gave it a squeeze.

"Let’s get you fed," Rae said as she led Helena towards the dinner where they’d parked.

It was relatively busy despite it being the middle of the night. It seemed to be a popular stop for travelers and they were lucky to snag one of the tables at the back.

A young waitress came up and took their orders, based on her scent she was a wolf.

At first, she seemed stunned to see Helena and Rae, probably because they were both mated and traveling without their mates. It may also have been Helena’s Alpha aura that was starting to get harder and harder to control as her pregnancy progressed.

Eventually, the waitress got over her shock and took Helena and Rae’s orders before disappearing into the kitchen.

"I told you he had feelings for you," Rae grumbled as she looked around, careful that no one would overhear them.

Based on the scents in the dinner it was a mix of various supernaturals and humans, with wolves being the majority.

There must have been a pack nearby for there to be these many wolves.

Humans were still the dominant species, but since supernaturals came out in the open a generation ago, they’d slowly been increasing in number.

"I told him I wasn’t interested," Helena grumbled.

"And what’s with him offering to come to Blackmoon?" Rae hissed. "You know Rome would kill him if he stepped foot into the territory."

"That’s exactly why I didn’t want him to come," Helena groaned. "After the attacks, I actually forgot to contact him. It wasn’t until we left Blackmoon that I was able to contct him again."

Rae sat up straight as her eyes lit up.

"Do you think Romeo’s stalking him?" Rae whispered.

"Him? Like Alphonse?" Helena asked.

"Yeah," Rae said, nodding agressively.

She was about to elaborate when the waitress returned with their orders.

The waitress watched them, making Helena raise and eyebrow at the young woman.

"Is something wrong?" Helena asked, sounding a little bit more intimidating than she wanted.

The waitress bit her lip and hesited.

Helena and Rae looked at each other.

There was definitly something suspicious going on with that girl.

"What is it?" Rae asked this time.

"Well, the owner was worried about you pair," the waitress said as she glanced back at an older woman who stood behind the counter. "Said it was odd that a pregnant mated ranked shewolf and her friend would be traveling alone."

"We aren’t alone," Helena answered.

It wasn’t a lie.

Alphonse was with them, he just went for a run.

"If you say so, ma’am," the waitress said.

She turned to leave, but Helena stopped her.

"What pack is closest here?" she asked the waitress.

Helena was well traveled and this close to Sunfire City she should have been familiar with the packs in the area, but they’d gone a different route.

"Opal Lake," the waitress answered. "It’s my pack. We’re a small pack but we’re better off than most."

Helena simply nodded.

"Are you a Luna?" the waitress asked, finding the courage to ask.

Helena looked at Rae and hesitated.

She was a Luna, but she was also an Alpha Heir.

"She’s an Alpha’s daughter," Rae answered for Helena. "We’re sisters."

"You look nothing alike," the waitress said, pointing out the obvious.

"Stepsisters," Helena admitted with gritted teeth.

"Where you guys headed?" the waitress asked.

Helena looked at Rae, the girl was asking too many questions.

"Sunfire," Helena said.

It was a common enough destination that no one would find it suspicious.

"Ah the big city, I heard they’re having another Blood Moon ball there this year," the waitress said as her eyes sparkled. "I’m gonna go, I hope I find my mate."

Helena smiled at the young woman.

"Well I should go, we just wanted to make sure you were safe and not on the run," the waitress said.

"On the run?" Helena asked, her interest suddenly piqued. "Have there been a lot?"

"Well, somethings been stirring with the bigger packs," the waitress said. "There are always visitors in Sunfire City and we’ve heard rumors of a fearsome Alpha and his mate that decided to defy him."

Helena froze as she looked at Rae.

"Have they found her?" Rae asked.

"No," the waitress said, shaking her head. "And I doubt the Sunfire Alphas will cough her up. They have a treaty with the Blackmoon and Stonehill Packs, they have to offer the Luna sanctuary and a home in either Sunfire or Blackmoon should the Luna choose that."

Helena nodded, happy that the treaty with her packs stood strong.

The mention of the treaty also meant that it wasn’t Romeo who had sent men in search of her. It truly was some other Alpha.

"Helena," Alphonse said, panting as he approached them.

"I’m guessing that might be your mate, I’ll let you be," the waitress said before leaving.

"I’m not giving up," Alphonse suddenly declared as he stood next to Helena’s seat.

"Alphonse," Helena groaned.

"No," Alphonse said, shaking his head. "You’re here, not with him. I still have a chance. So no, I’m not giving up."

Helena let out a sigh and shook her head. She didn’t think things would get this complicated.
