Is It Wrong To Love My StepBrother Alpha Mate? -
Chapter 69: Story of Parents
Chapter 69: Story of Parents
"I’ll need everyone to leave the room," Helena heard Romeo say.
When Raul said her Grandfather, the Grand Warlock, had been pleased with her assessment, she knew what it meant. She was powerful enough to be his heir.
’Can you sense our magic?’ Helena asked Hera.
’It’s only your magic, not mine,’ Hera answered, clearly distraught.
’But you feel it?’ Helena asked.
Hera was silent for a moment, making Helena nervous.
’I can feel shadows of it,’ Hera answered. ’I know it’s there, but I don’t know how powerful it is, nor can I touch it.’
Helena sighed.
She wasn’t the first witch-werewolf hybrid born. There had been others before her, but she knew she was the only one who could significantly use magic.
"Are you alright?" Romeo asked, pulling her from her thoughts as he led her to sit on his lap.
"They’ll leave, won’t they?" Helena said as her voice shook.
"You don’t know that," Romeo told her as he ran his fingers through her hair.
"It’s one thing to fight off a pack of wolves and another to fight off a pack of wolves backed by my Grandfather," Helena said, leaning her head against Romeo’s chest.
"We don’t even know for sure if it’s your Grandfather who’s been helping the wolves from Dark Ridge," Romeo told her. "We also don’t know if there truly are Witches and Warlocks involved."
"It’s magic, Romeo!" Helena said as she looked at him in disbelief. "There’s no other source."
"It could be a rebel group," Romeo told her. "What if we reached out to your Grandfather?"
Helena stopped and blinked.
It wasn’t a bad idea, but it posed more challenges and potential risks.
"Where would we even start?" Helena practically whispered to herself.
"I’m sure my Dad or the elders would have a way," Romeo comforted Helena as he kissed the top of her head.
Helena nodded, too exhausted to think.
Today had been an eventful day, between the Alpha Rite and the attack she and Romeo hadn’t even fully mated yet.
"You seem exhausted," Romeo told Helena as he carried her in his arms. "We should get to bed."
Helena weakly nodded in his arms as she felt him carry her through the pack house.
Romeo took the elevator this time, Helena knew because she heard the soothing elevator music they rarely used.
When Romeo finally placed her down on the soft bed her eyes snapped open and she sat up.
"Woah, Helena," Romeo said as he gripped her shoulders stedying her.
They were now in a room at least three times the size of Romeo’s old one.
She knew where they were, it was the Alpha’s suite.
"Why are we here?" Helena asked as she looked around.
It no longer carried her mother’s touch or her stepfather’s style. The room now mirrored Romeo’s except on a larger, grander scale.
"We were supposed to move here, remember?" Romeo asked as he soothed her, running his hand on her back.
"How did they get this done so quickly?" Helena asked as she swung her legs over the side of the bed and walked around the room, touching the walls.
"Mom and Dad actually moved out a few weeks ago," Romeo confessed. "I didn’t know what you’d like so I had them do it in my style and I was hoping that you’d transform this space into our room just like your Mom did when she was Luna."
Helena blinked as she looked at the mantel in the room.
On it were family portraits, there was one of when they were younger. It was when her mother and Romeo’s father had been newly mated.
She stood between Romeo and Rae and Romeo had his arm around her waist.
"We look like a couple," she blurted out.
"Were we ever not?" Romeo teased.
Helena smiled and shook her head. Despite having been with other men in her past she knew that Romeo was the only man she’d ever truly love.
Her eyes caught another photo, it was of Romeo and her.
They were younger, Romeo was hugging her from behind, his eyes trained on her.
"That was before you left, I think a week before," Romeo admitted as she scratched the back of his head. "The Blood Moon was two weeks away, and I was excited. It was the first Blood Moon where I’d be able to scent my mate, and even if I knew you wouldn’t be able to scent me, I was ecstatic to find out if you really were my mate."
Helena nodded as she looked at another photo.
This one was older, much older and it made Helena cry.
"Oh, baby," Romeo said as he held her.
"Do you remember that day?" she asked Romeo between sobs.
He looked at the photo for a while and didn’t say anything.
Helena worried that he didn’t remember it. It had been such an important day.
"How could I not, Helena?" Romeo sighed. "It was probably the last day we were all together. The last day before your dad and my mom died."
Helena nodded as the tears slowly fell from her eyes.
"I won a match against an adult male that day during training, do you remember?" Romeo asked her. "Your dad and my dad were so excited that they wanted to hangout by the lake, just your family and mine."
Helena closed her eyes.
She could almost hear her father’s deep laughter and Romeo’s mother’s bell-like giggles as Raul teased her about having another child.
Back then she and Rae had been clueless as to how babies were made, but Romeo clearly knew.
He looked like he wanted to throw up over the adults’ banter.
"Do you remember the attacks?" she asked Romeo. "The attacks that took them from us?"
Romeo nodded.
"Vampires, rogue wolves, and rebel witches and warlocks," Romeo whispered.
Romeo’s mother had passed first.
It was an ambush.
It was a miracle that Rae hadn’t died that day too. Her mother had the foresight to hide Rae.
"Do you think the attacks now could be related to their death?" Helena asked Romeo.
Romeo took a deep breath and nodded.
"It’s possible," he confessed. "We never found out why those people attacked, they just stopped after your dad died."
"I want to find them," Helena said. "I want to find them and I want to know why?"
"We’ll find them, love, but let’s focus on one battle at a time shall we," Romeo said as he kissed the top of her head, bringing her some sense of comfort in an otherwise confusing world.
