Chapter 63: Too Soon

Helena watched on nervously as the members of the Blackmoon pack swore their loyalty to Romeo.

Their oaths were different from hers.

As the Alpha Heir to the Stonehill pack, Helena couldn’t fully swear herself to the Blackmoon pack. Her oath was simply an oath of allegiance between Blackmoon and Stonehill, an oath that made the two packs the most formidable allied packs.

No other Alpha Heir would willingly make the same oath she did.

"He’s Alpha," Kade said as he stood by Helena’s side.

"And you’re a Gamma," she chuckled, giving her friend a nudge on the shoulder.

Kade laughed and shook his head.

"I never aimed to be Gamma of the Blackmoon pack," he told Helena.

"And yet here you are," Helena said as she gave him a smile.

Kade sighed and looked up at the moon.

They all knew, everyone knew. The Blood Moon was coming sooner than expected.

"The ball," Kade sighed.

"It can be moved up to tonight. All the guests are already here anyway," Helena shrugged.

She glanced around, observing what her next course of action could be.

"Are you going to leave?" Kade whispered. "You know you’ll break his heart if you do that again."

Helena shrugged, not wanting to answer the newly minted Gamma’s question.

"It’s my job to protect you," Kade sighed.

"I’m not your Luna," Helena said bitterly.

"You will be if you stay," he told her.

"Nothing is set in stone, plus I’m a distraction," Helena hissed.

"You’re his reason for being," Kade answered.

"Most Gammas don’t argue with their Lunas," Helena hissed.

"So you’re Luna now?" Kade teased.

Helena’s gaze snapped to him as she glared at him.

He’d caught her there, she’d called herself his Luna, his Alpha’s mate, a position she both feared and craved at the same time.

"He couldn’t function after I was attacked," Helena sighed. "Then when we were fighting, I swear I could have cost him his life if I had gotten injured."

Kade scoffed next to her.

"It was the first time you were incapacitated like that, and it was his first time experiencing such intense emotions, Helena," Kade explained. "He picked himself up quickly after that."

Helena knew Kade was right.

Romeo had adapted quickly to her injury. The longer she thought about it, the more she realized that her stepfather and uncle would probably have done the same thing if their Lunas had been injured.

"I will always be at risk. I’m an Alpha Heir, a warrior, and an ambassador to two packs," Helena pointed out.

"I doubt you’ll be an ambassador for long after tonight," Kade chuckled. "And you’ll just have to deal with having more wolves around you, protecting you."

Helena sighed and shook her head.

"Are you really protecting the Alpha, or are you protecting yourself from the fear of him not being your mate?" Kade asked.

Helena glared at the Gamma who only shrugged in response.

"Or are you afraid of getting hurt?" Kade asked. "I’ve seen the way the Alpha looks at you, he would never hurt you on purpose."

Helena sighed and shook her head.

"Sometimes we hurt the people we love the most without ever meaning to," she told Kade as she thought back to her father’s death.

Kade seemed to realize what she was talking about.

He placed a hand on her shoulder and gave it a squeeze.

"Your father died protecting out people. I’m sure he would have loved to have spent the rest of his days with you and your mother," Kade said.

Helena brushed his hand off and rolled her eyes.

She knew he didn’t want to leave them, she knew that her mother didn’t plan on losing herself to her grief. Helena was more than aware now of the pain of losing a mate, now that she’d been feeling a pull to Romeo.

Helena also knew that if she didn’t get out now she’d be tied to Romeo and tied to even greater pain in the future.

"You do know that it isn’t the Gamma position for Blackmoon that I’ve always wanted, right?" Kade chuckled as he changed the topic.

"I know," Helena sighed.

"I’ll be your Beta someday," he chuckled.

"And you’ll abandon Romeo and Neil," Helena teased back.

"They’ll find a suitable Gamma," Kade said as he looked at Romeo.

"Pretty sure I won’t be Alpha, my uncle is young," Helena pointed out.

"That’s true." Kade shrugged. "But he’s been training you like you’re the only choice."

Helena didn’t answer, she knew that much was true.

For some reason, her Uncle Jeremiah had been training her as if she was his true heir, and that always made her worry.

She didn’t want the wolves of Stonehill thinking she was trying to take the place from his son in the future.

But where did that leave her?

If she wasn’t going to be Alpha of Stonehill and not the Luna of Blackmoon, what future was she working toward?

She looked up at Romeo, and when their gazes met, he smiled.

He seemed lighter now compared to when she’d made her oath, probably because most of the pack links had been established again.

He was down to the last two members of the pack to swear their oaths, his father and her mother.

Helena glanced up at the moon again, it was now a brighter shade of red. She needed to get away, and she needed to get away soon.

Romeo caught her looking up, and he slowly shook her head as if he knew about her plans to leave.

As her stepfather made his oath, Helena made a move to leave.

She’d need to get her things from the pack house and get out of pack territory before Romeo was notified.

She would also need to find a safe space to hide out until the Blood Moon passed.

It had to be far enough from Blackmoon that Romeo couldn’t find her.

As Raul’s blood dripped into the bowl, Helena made her move.

She shifted from the stage, but just as she turned to leave, she heard a loud growl as the pack link locked into place.

"Mate," came Romeo’s familiar voice.
