Chapter 56: Be Useful

Helena acted as if her conversation with Romeo in the prison hadn’t happened at all.

On the way back to the pack house he tried to speak to her about it but she simply brushed him off.

He didn’t want her searching for that rogue commune. Most rouges didn’t like packed wolves and would attack on sight.

Romeo just wanted to make sure that she was safe.

They had hundreds of warriors that they could send to check the place out. She didn’t have to go, it could be someone else, but Helena refused to discuss the matter.

"How are you feeling?" Rae asked Helena during dinner.

It was the first time they were having a meal with the pack as a couple. They were seated next to each other while Romeo held her hand.

"Better," Helena answered Rae.

"You guys should have let me fight today," Rae grumbled.

"One of us had to stay home," Romeo chuckled.

"Did you get anything from the prisoners? I heard you went to interrogate them?" Raul asked as he joined the conversation.

Helena nodded and glared at Romeo.

"What did you do?" Raul asked his son, clearly trying to stifle a laugh.

"Nothing," Romeo grumbled.

"Oh, you definitely did something," Rae teased. "Did you go apeshit protective over Helena again?"

"I do not—"

"He did," Helena chuckled. "We have a lead on the attacks, and Romeo won’t let me pursue it."

Romeo laughed and shook his head.

Of course, Helena would do this.

He pulled her close and kissed her forehead, making her blush.

This was the first time he was truly affectionate toward her in front of everyone. He could tell that she was still adjusting.

They had time.

They had the rest of their lives to get used to it.

"Oh, darling, we both know it’s not that simple," Romeo chuckled.

He then turned to his father and stepmother and grinned.

"Helena managed to get the attackers to tell their stories," Romeo recounted. "They all aligned. They are all rogues that were banished from their packs due to selfish reasons of unjust alphas."

Alyssa gasped and covered her mouth.

"Oh, those poor wolves," she said, shaking her head.

Romeo recounted to their family the story they’d been told.

"Dark Ridge," Raul hummed as soon as Romeo finished his story.

Raul looked at his son and frowned.

"There were loose ends with that matter," Raul told Romeo and Romeo nodded in response.

"Helena wants to investigate the rogue commune," Romeo told his father.

"I mean, someone should," Raul said, agreeing with Helena.

Helena grinned at Romeo, but he grinned back.

"Helena wants to go to the commune herself," Romeo explained.

Raul’s eyes went wide.

"Absolutely not," he told his stepdaughter. "You going there would be like handing them a weapon that could destroy two packs!"

"I’m not planning on going on my own, Dad," Helena grumbled.

"Yeah, cause I’m going with you," Rae boasted.

"No!" everyone around the table shouted, making Rae jump back.

’Why are all the women in our lives so reckless and brave?’ Romeo grumbled to his wolf.

’You wouldn’t tolerate them otherwise,’ Ryder said with a chuckle.

"Maybe we should have this discussion another time?" Alyssa suggested.

Romeo nodded.

He knew he could always count on his stepmother to de-escalate the situation with his sister and mate.

"Why can’t I go?" Rae grumbled, unwilling to let the matter go. "I’m the best tracker."

"Because it’s dangerous," Romeo grumbled.

"Then why do I train my ass off?" Rae asked.

"To protect yourself," Romeo grumbled.

"Mine and Helena’s skills are wasted if you keep us locked up within the territory, let us help," Rae argued.

Romeo let out a sigh.

He knew he would have to give in eventually.

To his surprise, Helena reached out and touched his hand.

"We’ll bring as many warriors as you want," Helena told him. "I want to do a scouting mission before we even engage, so by the time Rae and I get there, we’ll already know what we’re facing."

Romeo closed his eyes and nodded.

"What?!" his father asked.

"It’s a dangerous mission, Romeo," Raul growled.

"Helena’s already mentioned all the precautions we need done before they engage," Romeo said with a sigh. "Rae is right, it would be a waste if we didn’t let them go."

"We already have the exact location, Dad," Helena argued.

"I’ll be able to tell if there are other wolves around even if a witch or warlock is involved," Rae added.

"Dad, we have to trust them some time," Romeo told his father.

When Raul wouldn’t budge, Romeo felt a tugging on his arm.

It was Helena, she looked exhausted and he wasn’t surprised if she was. They’d had a long day.

"I’m tired, help me to my room," she told Romeo.

He nodded.

He knew this was probably Helena’s way of helping him escape the upcoming argument with his father.

"Dad, Helena’s tired. I think I’ll help her to bed," Romeo announced as he picked Helena up in his arms, much to everyone’s surprise.

Romeo couldn’t help but grin as she tried to fight him, but he knew she’d tire eventually.

"Let me down," she grumbled.

"You’re tired," he said as he pressed a kiss to her lips, one that she didn’t fight against.

Helena simply sighed and shook her head as she rested it against his chest.

"You two are disgusting," Rae hissed as Romeo turned to leave.

He laughed out loud knowing tit would only further annoy his sister.

When they finally made it up to the Alpha’s floor, Romeo kicked the door open to his room and brought Helena inside with him.

"Bring me to my room," Helena insisted.

"Nope," Romeo said as he placed her down gently on his bed, kissing her again. "You’re moving in with me. Should I ask for your things to be moved in here?"

"Romeo!" Helena shouted.

"Right, that’s not practical since I’ll be moving to the Alpha’s suite tomorrow," he said, grinning at Helena.
