Chapter 50: Awake

It didn’t matter what he was doing before Rae burst through the doors. All that mattered was that Helena was finally awake.

Romeo was so desperate to get to Helena that rather than taking his car he shifted and ran to the pack hospital.

"Helena," Romeo shouted as he burst through her room’s door.

"Gross, put some clothes on, Romeo," Alyssa scolded as she tossed him a pair of shorts. "It’s a hospital for crying out loud."

His eyes remained on the now stirring Helena while he dressed.

There were several nurses and two doctors talking to her as he inched closer.

"Can I go to her?" he asked in a shaky voice.

"Romeo?" Helena called out.

Romeo didn’t even bother to wait for the doctors’ go signal.

When he heard Helena call for him, he went to her side and held her hand.

"I’m here, love," he said as he lifted her hand and pressed his lips against her now warmer fingers. "I’m so happy you’re awake."

"So am I," Helena said with a pained laugh.

"How’s she doing, doc?" Romeo asked as he looked up at the doctor.

The pack doctor looked at Helena for a moment before speaking. Something about the shared look between the doctor and Helena made Romeo uneasy.

"She’s doing great," the doctor finally said. "She was fully healed before she woke up, and I’m guessing that’s why it took her so long. Her body must have been working on overtime."

"Am I free to leave?" Helena asked in a cracked voice.

"Mom, water," Romeo called out to Alyssa. He had forgotten that Helena hadn’t had any food or water since the incident, she must have been parched.

"Yes, you can travel back to the main pack house but I recommend taking it easy," the doctor said with a grin making Helena almost spit out her water.

"We’ll make sure they’re in separate rooms," Alyssa teased, much to everyone’s amusement.

Romeo groaned, but Helena squeezed his hand and gave him a small smile.

In an instant, his annoyance was gone, and he was smiling back at her, thankful that she was awake.

"Are you feeling strong enough to go home?" Romeo asked Helena as he eyed her, looking for any other signs of weakness that she might be hiding.

"In a few minutes?" she asked him.

"Sure," Romeo said as he placed a kiss on the top of her head.

"If that’s all, Alphas, we’ll let Alpha Helena rest before you leave," the pack doctor based in the Red River side of the pack told Romeo.

"Yes, please, we’ll see you tomorrow night at the Rite," Romeo told the doctors. "Thank you for all your help."

The doctors and nurses smile and left as they too thanked Romeo and Helena.

"You should have seen this one," Rae chuckled. She slipped into the room while Romeo and Helena were speaking to the doctors and was accompanied by Romeo’s Betas and Gamma. "He was beside himself."

Helena shot him a concerned look but he simply smiled in response.

"I was worried," he admitted. "You were poisoned, Helena and then you wouldn’t wake up."

"It took us a day to get him to bathe and leave your side," Kade scoffed.

"You’re my Gamma," Romeo grumbled.

"A Gamma’s first loyalty lies with their Luna," Kade pointed out, making Helena flinch. "Plus I still want to be her Beta."

His second statement made Helena relax, but she was still tense.

"The Alpha Rite is tomorrow?" Helena asked as he diverted the topic.

"Yes, love," Romeo told her. "You were unconscious the whole day yesterday and most of today."

"We need to get back, all the preparations—"

"Are being dealt with," Alyssa said as she joined them.

"I helped!" Rebecca said, popping up next to Romeo, making Helena laugh so hard that she had to clutch her side.

Romeo quickly stood up to check on her, but she waved him away.

"All you have to do is be there," Alyssa told her daughter. "We were all worried, but not as worried as this one."

Alyssa gestured to Romeo, who felt like a little boy again, blushing as his feelings for Helena were brought up.

"I wasn’t entirely useless," Romeo pointed out. "I established an office in this part of the pack, and we have the pack house up and running now as a community center."

"Like we discussed," Helena said as she looked at Romeo.

"The main one will be our home, then we’ll have offices here and someday in Blackmoon," Romeo nodded.

"I think you guys were planning that far," Neil scoffed.

"I had to entertain his ideas on the drive here," Helena teased.

Romeo didn’t mind he teasing as he watched her smile and laugh.

It was nice to see her getting stronger every second. He knew she’d be fine.

"Why don’t you all leave and go back home? I’ll take Helena back when she’s feeling better," Romeo suggested.

"Come on, Becca," Alyssa said as she offered her hand to her youngest. "Your Dad’s been harassing me to come back."

Rebecca waved goodbye to them and climbed up Helena’s bed to give her a hug before leaving with their mom.

"You sure you don’t need us?" it was Daniel who asked this time.

"It’s fine. You’ll ride with Neil back to the main pack house? It’s only a few days," Romeo asked his other Beta.

"We got this one covered," Rae said with a wink. "Come on guys, let’s let the lovebirds have their alone time."

Romeo groaned while Helena glared at Rae.

Rae simply laughed it off and left with the three men following her.

"Finally," Romeo said when the door closed behind his sister and he held Helena by the back of her head and pressed his lips to hers.

He kissed her passionately like he hadn’t kissed her in months.

"I missed you. I was so worried," he confessed.

"I’m fine, we’re fine," Helena promised as she looked into his eyes. There was something else there, but he couldn’t quite put his finger onto what it was.
