Chapter 47: Would Be Rebels

The crowd was silent as the first group left.

Three brothers, all warriors. Their mother was a former pack doctor broken by her husband’s death.

Helena stood and watched as doubt crept through the crowd.

No one moved.

No one wanted to announce that they were willing to swear their loyalty to the Blackmoon pack or if they wanted to leave.

Helena knew she had to do something, if not as Romeo’s girlfriend then as his ally as the Alpha Heir of Stonehill.

"We will be fair," Helena said as she spoke up.

The attention of the crowd shifted to her as she took a step forward, standing right next to Romeo.

"You’re the she-wolf that wants be his mate, of course you’ll speak for him," someone, an old man in the crowd, scoffed as he glared at Helena.

"I’d watch my tongue when speaking to her if I were you," Kade growled. "She’s—"

Helena raised her hand, stopping Kade from speaking midsentence.

"I’m not speaking to you as his girlfriend," Helena said. "I’m speaking to you as his ally, as the Alpha Heir of the Stonehill Pack."

People began to whisper.

It wasn’t common knowledge that Stonehill’s Alpha Heir was female or that she was involved with the Alpha Heir of the Blackmoon Pack.

When she’d last visited, she’d introduced herself as Alpha Jeremiah’s niece and Alpha Raul’s stepdaughter. There was no mention of her rank.

"Blackmoon is a fair pack led by fair leaders," Helena announced. "Give them a chance, Alpha Raul and Alpha Romeo will not stop you should you want to leave."

Again, there was silence.

They waited painfully long until someone stepped forward, a young man who looked familiar to Helena.

"I’ll swear first, I’ll do the oath," he announced.

"Daniel, you can’t!" a woman at the front shouted as she tried to grab hold of Daniel.

"Why can’t I? He’ll be a better Alpha than Ash ever was," Daniel announced before marching up the stage and offering his hand to Romeo.

Based on the informal way he’d mentioned their former Alpha’s name, Helena could already assume that he was Ash’s family.

"You’re Ash’s brother," Helena said as she realized who he was and who the woman who was trying to stop him had been. She was was the doweger Luna. Ash and Daniel’s mother.

"Yup," Ash said with a boyish smile. He looked no older than eighteen and was honestly better looking than his brother. "Many members of the pack don’t want me to make the oath because they think the title of Alpha is my right, but I never wanted it."

"What do you want?" Romeo asked the young man.

"To protect and help these people," Ash answered confidently. "It’s all I ever wanted."

He glanced at Helena and hesitated.

"What is it?" she asked.

"My brother wasn’t a bad Alpha," he told her. "He wasn’t the best either. Our finances were failing, and our warriors were getting weaker. Plus, I don’t approve of how he treated you. He was always so obsessed with you. I’ll show his shrine after this."

"No thanks," Helena chuckled.

"Just tell me if you change your mind. It’s real creepy," he told Helena, laughing.

Turning to Romeo, he raised his hand and offered his palm, hovering it above a basin that was meant to catch their blood.

"I’m ready," he said with a determined expression. "I’ll swear my loylty to the Blackmoon pack, its Alpha, its future Luna, and to its allies."

Romeo gave him a smile and cut a small wound on each of their palms and pressed them together.

"Repeat after me," Romeo said. "I, Daniel Red River, accept Blackmoon as my pack and swear my loyalty to its Alpha, Luna, and its allies."

Daniel repeated his words and waited for Romeo to accept his oath.

"I, Romeo Blackmoon, Alpha Heir of the Blackmoon pack, accept you, Daniel Red River, as a deputy Beta for Blackmoon," Daniel’s eyes went wide as the packlinks fell into place.

Helena knew why Romeo was giving the young man the role.

It wasn’t just a political ploy, it was a way to give Daniel the chance to protect and help.

With Daniel giving his oath and joining Blackmoon, the rest of the pack soon followed.

The first one up the stage after him was his own mother, the very woman who didn’t want him swearing an oath to Blackmoon.

Excluding the children and those that seemed to hold back, Romeo swore in over two hundred new pack members.

Helena was walking around, talking to people, when she noticed an odd movement.

Someone had shifted.

Everything happened so quickly. At first, she thought the wolf would attack her, but when she realized that the wolf was after her mother, she quickly pivoted and knocked her mom out of the way.

"Luna!" she heard Gamma Norton shout.

"Get mom to safety," she shouted at the Gamma as the wolf’s claws came down against her torso, scratching her.

"Fuck," she cursed.

"Kade, get everyone else out of here!" Romeo shouted.

Helena didn’t have time to think. She threw herself at the wolf and twisted its neck, killing it in an instant.

As the wolf dropped dead, she felt a piercing pain behind her shoulder, making her scream.

She turned to find the man she recognized to be Ash’s beta standing behind her, smiling.

"That’s for leading the Alpha to his grave," the beta hissed.

Helena let out a growl as she plunged her hand into the man’s chest. She heard his ribs crack as his face contorted with pain.

"He challenged an Alpha, he chose not to yield, he chose his death," she growled as she gripped his heart and pulled it out, her hand dripping with blood as she threw the still beating heart aside.

As Helena fought with the beta, the wolf warriors from the packs descended on the would be rebels, killing them quickly as Romeo killed those that tried to attack her.

When Romeo got to Helena, she felt the world dim and the room start to spin.

"Romeo," Helena gasped before the world went dark, and she felt herself falling before losing consciousness.
