Chapter 36: A Party and A Pack of She-Wolves
"Jenna, Chloe," Rae said with gritted teeth. "I don’t think it’s your place to comment about—"
"It’s fine," Helena told Rae with a slight smile.
"What do you mean it’s fine?!" Rae asked, appalled by Helena’s reaction. "Have you not forgotten what these two used to say when we were kids?"
"Exactly, we were kids," Helean chuckled.
"Yeah, I’m not too proud of that," the blonde, Jenna, said as her shoulders deflated and she bent her head down. "I guess getting out of the pack really helped me realize how petty and small some people are."
Rae looked at Helena in disbelief.
"You don’t need to pretend to still hate them for me," Helena chuckled.
"I don’t?" Rae asked as her features softened.
"Yeah, I know that people can change," Helena shrugged. "I met or should I say re-met Jenna and Chloe during elite training, the day you decided to sleep in."
"You were gone a long time," Rae sighed.
Helena pulled her best friend and step-sister into a half-armed hug.
"Of course, I knew you would make new friends," Helena chuckled. "Even I made new friends."
"Alphonse," Rae giggled.
"Alphonse?" Jenna and Chloe asked at the same time.
"We thought you and Alpha Romeo were an item," Chloe pointed out.
"Speaking of the Alpha, where is he?" Jenna asked, wiggling her eyebrows.
"Ewww, please don’t ever insinuate their sex life," Rae grumbled.
"So there is a sex life," Chloe giggles.
"I’m sure he’ll be down soon," Helena said as she cleared her throat and glanced at the door that connected the pack house to the Dinning Hall.
When she’d arrived and Romeo was visibly absent, she too wondered what was taking him so long. It’s not like he had to take another shower like she had.
’Maybe he had to deal with a little problem in his pants again,’ Hera teased.
Helena couldn’t help but blush at what her wolf was insinuating, though Romeo had been quite insatiable both times that they’d slept together.
"Oh look," Rae whispered. "It’s the Romeo fan club."
"The what?" Helena spat.
"The Romeo fan club," Rae shrugged. "Look you didn’t have to sit and watch them all talk about Romeo as if he’s the Goddess’ gift to wolf kind or make assumptions about his sexual prowess."
Helena’s eyes went wide with surprise. That was the last thing she’d expected the visiting she-wolves to talk about around Rae.
"In front of you, his sister?" Helena asked, raising her eyebrow and crossing her arms across her chest.
"I didn’t say who I was," Rae shrugged. "Look, assuming it’s not you and Romeo at the end of all this I wanted to see what I was in for."
Helena swallowed hard.
She’d had thoughts about the possibility of her and Romeo not ending up as mates. It was part of the reason why she avoided being in Blackmoon during the Blood Moon Ball, but hearing it from someone else just felt different, it felt even scarier than she’s played it in her head.
"Wait, oh no, you’re freaking out," Rae said in a panicked tone as she placed her hands on Helena’s shoulder. "I know it’s you and him, I just—"
Helena shook her head, making Rae stop.
"It’s a possibility I’ve always known," she said as she gave Rae a sad smile.
"Oh my gosh is that why—" Jenna gasped.
Helena sighed and nodded slowly.
In the short time she’d been home she’d connected with these women despite their past.
"Where is he?" Helena and her group heard someone grumble as they decided to settle at a table near them.
"Maybe he’s got meetings or something," another she-wolf that Helena recognized as one of the women fawning over Romeo when they arrived said as she comforted her friend.
"Ugh, why do we need the Blood Moon to recognize our mates anyway?" the first one grumbled. "I’m definitely Alpha Romeo’s mate, I felt a connection when we met."
Next to Helena, Rae rolled her eyes so hard that Helena wouldn’t be surprised if she saw into her skull.
"You would make such cute pups," one of the she-wolves cooed.
Helena felt her temper rise and it was as if her gut was being twisted.
’Jealous?’ Hera teased.
’No,’ she scoffed.
’He’s ours,’ Hera growled in her head, making Helena smile. Her wolf might be trying to tease her but she knew Hera also loved Romeo and his wolf Ryder. They’d always loved the pair.
"I’d be happy to mate with the Alpha Heir of the Stonehill pack," one she-wolf said, drawing Helena’s attention.
This one seemed more timid than the others. She probably didn’t want to compete with her friends thinking she would lose to them.
"Ooooh, that’s a good one," the she-wolf that believed she was mated to Romeo said. "I heard they’re best friends. I used to think the Alpha Heir of Stonehill would make a good mate, but Blackmoon is so much bigger now."
Helena’s and Rae’s gazes met and both women broke out into laughter.
It seemed that they were loud enough to draw the group’s attention.
"Are you mocking us?" the she-wolf who seemed to be the leader of their little pack said as she stood up and marched up to Helena.
She was at least a few inches taller than Helena and was wearing a pair of heels that made her even taller.
Unlike Helena, who chose to dress practically, this she-wolf was in a red bodycon that seemed more like a torture device to Helena.
"Who are you even?" the she-wolf said as her gaze scanned Helena from head to toe, clearly judging her.
"Probably some she-wolves lucky to have been invited to this party," one of her companions scoffed.
It was Jenna and Chloe’s turn to laugh, unlike the guests, they knew exactly who Helena and Rae were. They’d also been there, done that, and knew it was useless to judge others that way.
"This is Eleanor, she’s the daughter of the Silverfang Pack Alpha," her companion pointed out. "Do you really think you have a better chance with Alpha Romeo and his friend than she does?"
Helena smiled and shook her head.
"Oh darling, I sure as hell think I do."
