Chapter 64: Beasts of the forest

"When they were desperate they used me as a tool," Veira murmured, resting the instrument lightly against the table. Turning towards Gerard who stood there listening to every word.

"They were desperate, losing to the enemy so they had to make a deal with the devil," She spat, her face grimacing at the memory of it, "It blinded them, they wanted power, so i gave it to them,"

"But in the face of their lives hanging before them, they are cowardly, screaming as I slit the rubbery barrier that holds all those sensitive bits that keeps us alive~" She took her gloves off, the pair hitting the table with a soft thud.

"Did you know, among all the races on this god forsaken planet we are the only ones that can survive being cut open like that, some longer than others," She laughed, "So then with that knowledge I wondered, what would happen if I tweak this– moved this, or maybe..."

She tapped against her skull, her smile widened, manic as if she herself had lost all sight of her mind. "Experimenting with the brain, the very thing that holds us back,"

"Of course, most wouldn’t survive that, but you all are different," Veira walked up to Gerard, her hands playfully behind her back as she looked up to him, his gaze dropping down to her level with a more indifferent gaze despite her words.

"’You all’?" He quoted,

"Yeah~ You, Freya, Lailla..." She listed off, her gaze to the ceiling as she recalled all the names from thought. "You all survived my cruelty, and you’re now reborn,"

Her hands reached up to cup his face, her hands surprisingly gentle despite her hardships, "As my very own creations..."

Sirens blared loudly cutting their moment, the scientist’s eyes widened at the sudden interruption, her gaze filled with intrigue at the sudden change of events.

"Seem’s our company is out..." She muttered, her words just soft enough for Godric to pick up, her hand slowly falling off his face. "You know what to do—"

Vagnis squinted his eyes as Freya got in closer to her staff whistling in the silent forest. Each blow cracked against his skin. The Boy staggering backwards to even gain space between them as the tree’s towered around them bordering their fight like giants, their thick branches shifting ever so slightly in the soft bursts of wind passing by.

"Not so tough without your friend, huh?" She asked, her words laced with mockery to the boy’s weakness. His feet dug against the earth as he tried to keep his own against her. Freya’s staff ricocheted off his blade each time he narrowly blocked her blow, the noise echoing through the forest.

His opponent grinned, spinning around with her staff as the end of it dug into the dirt below them, her grip tightened as brought it up with all her might, pieces of rock and dirt shooting up to his already hindered eyes.

The Craftsman hissed at the sudden attack unaware of her next move, his opponent sending her leg straight for his head, the blow sending Vagnis skipping across the dirt, slamming against a tree.

He gasped for air, the wind leaving his body from the collision, his gaze grewing hazy as he struggled to keep standing.

"Aw stop, you’ll make me feel bad," Freya laughed, watching as the boy planted his feet firmly into the ground, though looking as though he might fall at a moment’s notice. "I’ll tell you what, how about you and your guys come silently with us and—"

Her words were cut off as Vagnis tried to slice at her side, his blade raising in a precise arc she narrowly avoided. The glistening blade takes parts of her clothing with it’s attempt.

Freya’s gaze twitched with annoyance, snapping towards the Craftsman who’s staring her down despite his challenges, his breath coming in short pants, desperately trying to gain himself once more.

"Well don’t blame me if thing’s go south—" She spat, spinning her staff at the ready before dashing in with almost lightning speed.

Vagnis quickly parried her quick shots, the two weapons bouncing off each other at each explosive strike.

"You really think your primitive village can beat us?!" She mocked them as they were held at a standstill, pushing their weapons against each other in hopes of overwhelming the other.

"Every single one of us has been reborn, modified by Lady Viera!" She started to get the edge on the boy, her staff pushing the end of his blade closer and closer to his face. He grits his teeth with effort, he can feel the strain of each tendon in his arm as he tried to resist but it was no use in the face of his opponent.

"Hey, hey, hey, time out!" Favio shouted, his arms in a cross as his opponent came rushing for him with his blade. The black haired Aelvarian barely made it out of harm’s way, dodging the attack entirely before reaching for the flashlight he was given, shining light on his attacker.

His skin looked to be a lime green, his brown hair falling just short of his blue eyes that winced at the sudden light though he didn’t waste a second more, immediately charging through the obstruction to strike at him.

Favio felt the hot steam that would gush out of his opponent’s blade increasing the speed of his strikes, The almost golden glimmer of the weapon would catch anyone’s eye even in the dark, though the details were masked under the forest’s shroud.

"Seriously? your weapon is so much cooler than mine—" He muttered, jealousy tinged within his voice as the man continued to strike at him but his blows were yet to land on him. The young warrior leaned back as far as he could, watching the blade slice through the air above him before sweeping his opponent’s feet.

Before he could react, his foe caught himself by the arms, pushing off the ground and staggering back to regain his footing. Favio clicked his tongue in annoyance—something else had caught his attention. The distance.

His gaze shifted to the side, drawn toward the depths of the forest. He lingered for only a second, but it was enough. Something was there.

He snapped back just in time to see the man lunging at him.

"Time out, will you—" he growled, but the blade was already upon him. It tore across his stomach with ease. The cut was shallow, but the pain was sharp and the blood poured freely. Favio bit down hard on his inner lip, stifling the scream clawing up his throat.

Something’s there. I can hear it—

His eyes drifted back toward the trees. The forest had gone quiet, save for the soft, deliberate pat of something massive moving between the trunks.

Then the stench hit him—thick and metallic, like rusted iron left to rot in the sun. It wrapped around him, suffocating.

A low growl curled out from the shadows.

And then—slowly, silently—a monstrous head emerged from the darkness, its fur matted and black, its teeth far too long for something of this world.

Its eyes were the worst part—glowing, sickly yellow orbs that seemed to stare through flesh and straight into the soul.

The two men froze, caught in its gaze, the forest around them suddenly colder, as if the world itself dared not breathe.
