Chapter 42: Test

"Everyone settled?" A man’s voice boomed as they entered their mechs, each and every one lined up before Fiona, Takashi and Elliot. Their sleek exosuits stuck to their skin, their bodies covered in a white rubbery material, their chest, forearms and legs overlaid with a thick black exoskeleton, only leaving the knee free.

The air tasted of ozone and metal, their boots squeaking against the pristine white Aluminum floors as they made it to their mechas.

"Takashi Kamina?"

"Online!" Takashi declared, watching as the machine around him started to buzz to life before his very eyes, the blue neon lights pristine against the machine’s sleek black metal, humming under the soft light of the room around them.

"Elliot Graves?"

"Online..." The boy muttered, his fingers working upon the keyboard, watching as the HUDs started to appear before his eyes, tracking their next course.

"Fiona Fairglaze?"

"Online—" Fiona crossed her arms, a light roll to her eyes at this stupid routine.

"Alright," A translucent screen appeared before them, showing a man who seemed to be in his thirties, his head cleaned of all hair. His tanned skin shining against the light from the control room. "I’ll be overseeing your first mission back,"

"We’re going to track your vitals and any sign for... unstable abnormalities..." His breath hung on the last word, his gaze scanning between them skeptically. "If this mission goes without a hitch we can move you to a different commander with no issues."

"Understood," Fiona sighed, the door to the room shielded shut, layers upon layers of metal slamming down against each other to keep a tight barrier. The hatch begins to open, showing the view of space as gusts of wind started to escape the room.

[Initiating oxygen supply!]

[Oxygen 100%]

[Energy 100%]

[Vitals stable!]

[Mecha pilots detected!]

[Activating Abnormal gear!]

Their exosuits hissed, the rubbery material adhering tighter around their form as the power started to spike. Fiona’s breath hitched in pain as a jagged sting ran up her spine, her eyes shut as she waited for it to blow over, both Takashi and Elliot remaining breathless.

[Anti Abnormal Exo Suits on!]

[Elliot 10%]

[Fiona 21%]

[Takashi 15%]

"Woah, that’s two more than last time! Congrats Elliot!" Takashi laughed, his boisterous laughter echoing through their mech’s comms.

"Right...thanks," Elliot nodded, his gaze hung low but his hands remaining on the controls.

"Right, Lift off will begin in T-5," The man huffed, his voice screaming to everyone that he doesn’t even want to be here.

"5" He began, everyone bracing themselves, Takashi’s gaze raised to the ceiling above, itching to get out there.

"4"

"3"

The mechs all started to hum at once.

Takashi whooped, his machine revving like a starved beast. "C’mon, faster! I wanna see the fireworks!" Neon graphs lit up his HUD.

"2"

"1"

The mech’s clamps disengaged as all of them lunged ahead, the afterimage of their thrusters searing streaks into the black voids of space, causing the stars to blur together. Elliot took a good glance back, looking at the bunker they had left behind.

Above the swirling blue marble of the planet, the orbital platform hung like a skeletal spider, its segmented arms bristling with rows of drop pods. Each capsule was a sleek, obsidian dagger pointed towards them.

[WARNING! WARNING!] His mecha blared, causing the boy to jump at the sudden noise. Quickly his eyes snapped to the HUD gaze quickly reading the information that his scan acquired.

"Anomaly outbreak on Planet Nexia!" He shouted, his hands already working to send the information to them. Popping it up on their HUDs, Takashi grinned as he saw it.

"We need to secure a spot to land," Fiona chimed, The boy getting to work on just that.

"Already on it!" Elliot declared, the mech’s changing trajectory immediately,

"Evacuate the area! Mech launch zone has been marked!" Officers shout amongst the city, guiding civilians to safety as they watched the anomaly wreaked havoc on the city as giant beasts, one a pristine white with dark obsidian for its face, it’s tall metallic yet skeletal frame crushing the futuristic buildings, Neon signs crashing to the floor, littering the already dirted streets with its giant arms while the other stood on all fours, sporting the same colors as it’s partner it’s tentacles spewed out of it’s spine, slamming into anything in its path.

A little boy watched behind the line, his gaze looking up in both shock and wonder at the otherworldly creatures. He was a rather scrawny boy with three freckles lined under his left eye, no older than 18 at least. His hair was scruffy and black, almost hiding his neon blue gaze that peered so intently.

In his hand, held Yuzu, offline and unable to run.

"Kid, what are you doing?! Get back!" An older man; who was already prepared to retreat, shouted at the boy. His grasp only tightened against the broken machine, his eyes glittering with admiration as it appeared. Three blue outlines boxing an X respectively, approximately 4000 sq feet in size...

"No way," The boy muttered, more to himself than the man. "Don’t you know what this is?"

"The first recruits from the old generation to ever do a mission in thirty years..." He muttered, his excitement evident as streaks of fire split the clouds, trailing afterimages as their mech’s finally landed.

"What’s the status of the anomaly?" Fiona questioned, HUDs appearing before her as Elliot calculated the information in record time.

"They’re both Vaelthiers! Not much is here in the data though—" He announced, pulling up scanned information of the beasts before them, "Former identities, Harry Stalis and William Revolt, ages 21 and 23 respectively!"

"Their home planet was Terranix," Takashi muttered as he read their personal information, his gaze shifting back towards Anomaly, the former owner of the bike he stole. "Let’s get this over with quickly."

"They probably don’t know it yet..." The boy muttered, his smile soon turning to something more thoughtful. "The fate of the universe is set on how well they perform..."
