Infinite Paths: The Raging Phoenix
Chapter 1256 - 1256: No solution

"Stay close, and don't let the enemies get closer," Jori declared. "Keep your eyes open for more enemies arriving as well."

Everyone grabbed their weapons and began to bombard the skeletons with fireballs. The attacks reached and exploded upon contact with the skeletons, making them tremble all over. At the same time, the miasma made the fire expand… it seemed that it could be burned. Rain had assumed that it was just a source of energy mixed with the corrupt power, but maybe he was wrong.

In any case, even those who weren't specialized in magic were able to melt the enemies with their fireballs. The skeletons that were able to get hit by Rain's attacks melted completely, or at least lost half of their bodies, thanks to his attacks. Regardless, Rain soon stopped when he noticed something weird in the air, and he caught sight of an unusual sound.

When he looked up, he saw some skeletons emerging from the towering bones that reached the skies… ready to fall and attack them from above.

"So, it is like that, huh?" Rain thought.

The undead king used his skeletons to build the city, and he also could reuse the city to summon the skeletons… maybe the city was still expanding as he kept summoning them. The power of summoners was really useful… Rain had something similar to that, but it wasn't even close in terms of utility.

In the end, Rain summoned two fire vortexes around the group and made them dance around until the skeletons jumped to reach them, and then he made the spells engulf those creatures and burn them. In the next moment, Rain tried to burn all the bones as well around, but they were quite resilient…

"They are a lot more resilient than the skeletons," Rain thought while furrowing his eyebrows. "Is it because of the corrupt power becomes more powerful when they aren't active?"

Rain couldn't confirm his hypothesis about the resilience of the bone structures, but the urgency of the situation pushed him to find a solution quickly. As the towering bone structures loomed over them, Rain's attention was drawn to the ominous sword, the very weapon that resonated with his Wrath.

With a determined look, Rain grabbed the ominous sword and channeled the power of fire into it. The flames danced along the blade, intertwining with the aura of his Wrath. The sword, now enveloped in a fierce combination of dark fire, took on an even more menacing appearance.

Rain swung the sword with unparalleled force, and as it connected with the bone towers, the flames erupted in a spectacular display. The combination proved to be devastating as the sword cut through the bone structures with astonishing ease. Not only did it slice through the bones, but it also unleashed a destructive force that crumbled the burned parts into fine dust.

"This confirms it; the towers are used for defensive purposes, turning the miasma into a defensive buff," Elisabetha said.

"Seems like it," Rain said.

"Rain, save your energy for later; this will be a very drawn-out battle," Jori said. "Besides, this is a good chance for us as well."

Everyone had the diligence path, so they had that skill, too, and as long as they didn't suffer damage, their powers would keep growing. Jori was counting on that as they gained a lot of experience in those small fights as well to make things easier ahead.

Unfortunately, it looked like the enemies had realized what the group was planning… before long, the skeletons stopped coming. The group stayed on their guard as they began to move and checked the bodies of the skeletons… at least, that was their intention… the creatures' bodies had vanished.

"This might be bad… the towers that were used to summon the monsters didn't decrease their size at all," Rain said.

"Which means that they didn't lose that much of the skeletons that we destroyed, right?" Jori asked.

"Indeed… it is unlikely that they will be able to resummon all of them so fast, but they have enough materials not to worry about that," Rain said.

Rain carefully observed the situation, choosing not to disclose the impact of his Flames of Wrath on one of the towers. He noticed that the size of the tower had decreased by approximately twenty percent, a result of the intense flames consuming its materials. This reduction might affect the enemies' ability to summon reinforcements, providing a slight advantage to the group.

Corrupt magic, indeed, had its own set of rules and vulnerabilities. Rain pondered on the possibility of exploiting this weakness further. However, he hesitated to propose a full-scale use of corrupt magic against the enemy, as it could pose risks and unintended consequences.

The corrupt power had a tendency to amplify and react to its own kind, making it potentially volatile and uncontrollable if unleashed collectively by the entire group.

"We will have to use the diligence path against these enemies and the towers," Rain thought. "Even so, we would have to spend our mana as well, and I can't say if we have nearly enough to pull that off."

The city was, most likely, a massive storage of energy that the target created over thousands of years; it made sense that they wouldn't have enough mana to pull that off. Still, the enemy was utterly committed to keep accumulating power to free himself from that shithole… his powers and techniques will be very useful to the group.

"Still, taking down this kind of enemy will be hard, even if we use the counter-power of the diligence path," Rain thought. "We will need more than that."

That was a problem because no matter how much he thought about it, Rain was unable to come up with a solution to that issue…
