Chapter 216: Tell Her.... That He Accepted

Chapter 216: Tell Her.... That He Accepted

Ethan took one step forward.

Just one.

He hadn’t said anything yet. But his lips had parted slightly, and his eyes had settled on the instructor in front of him.

A small motion, quiet moment, but it was enough to tell the room that he was about to speak.

And then she moved.

The instructor from Astralis University—still calm, still unshaken—shifted her hand slightly and turned her head toward the audience.

"I wasn’t planning to say this yet," she said, "but it looks like it’s necessary."

Her voice didn’t rise, but it cut through the room like a clean breath of air.

Most of the recruiters instinctively glanced her way.

"Ethan Nocturne," she said, turning back toward him, "your personal mentor at Astralis will be none other than Professor Ardis."

The words didn’t hit all at once.

Some people blinked. Others frowned, trying to place the name.

But the ones who knew?

They reacted instantly.

The Kyrix recruiter’s hand twitched slightly, her jaw tightening. The man from Valespring took a slow breath through his nose.

Even the woman from Umbra Tech blinked, once, her expression briefly losing its flat edge.

The silence broke. But not from noise.

It broke from awareness.

Ethan hadn’t moved yet. His head tilted slightly to the side, just a fraction.

He hadn’t heard the name before.

At least, not in the way the others clearly had.

The instructor seemed to expect that.

She didn’t rush. She just spoke again, clearly, plainly.

"She’s not a public figure. You won’t find many interviews or lectures. But she’s one of the most powerful active superpower users alive."

Still, she didn’t raise her voice. But the room heard her.

"She took on the Darkridge Riot five years ago alone. Seventy-three gold-ranked monsters. Eleven platinum-class threats. Several mutated beast overlords. She didn’t just survive."

She paused.

"She ended it in under an hour."

This time, even the students reacted.

A few audible gasps broke through. Someone in the middle row muttered a quiet, "No way," under their breath. Another pulled up a tablet, trying to verify it.

They wouldn’t find much.

Most of the reports were scrubbed or classified. But enough whispers had floated around for years about the woman who walked into a sealed zone by herself and came out without a single wound.

Ethan still hadn’t spoken.

But his expression had changed.

Not a surprise. Not awe.

Just interest. Thoughtfulness.

And a bit of curiosity that hadn’t been there a minute ago.

The instructor went on.

"This isn’t part of your formal record. It’s a private request. Professor Ardis asked to mentor the student who was the first in the rank after the riot, which was not part of the offer when this year’s exam started, but the riot changed things, and the winner of this year’s forbidden trial is you."

Her words hung in the air.

No one interrupted.

Even the host stood still now, hands resting on the edge of his podium, lips pressed together.

Ethan finally looked down at the black folders.

Then back to the woman.

He wasn’t trying to look mysterious. He just wasn’t rushing. He was thinking.

And when he spoke, his voice wasn’t loud. But it was clear.

"I see."

That was it.

He glanced to his left. Evelyn’s eyes met his again. Everly gave a faint nod.

There was no whisper between them. No eye signal. Just presence.

The kind that said, ’We’re still here. It’s still your call.’

Ethan looked forward again.

"Then I accept."

That was all he said.

Simple. Direct.

The recruiter didn’t smile. She just gave a short nod and passed the folders to her assistants, who stepped forward and handed them to Ethan with smooth, professional movements.

The crowd remained quiet.

It wasn’t the kind of silence that asked for applause.

It was the kind that settled in after a decision that didn’t need to be explained.

The host finally moved. He adjusted his collar, blinked twice, then cleared his throat gently.

"Well," he said, glancing down at the selection list, "that concludes the official offers for the top-ranked students in this year’s exam."

His voice had regained its rhythm, but there was something else in it now. A subtle tension. Like he was still catching up with what had just happened.

He glanced at Ethan one more time, then turned back to the crowd.

"Those of you still awaiting follow-ups from secondary academies, please remain seated until your row is called. All others—"

He paused.

Then, it changed course slightly.

"All others, please give a round of acknowledgment to the students who have just completed one of the most extraordinary selection exams in recent history."

The applause didn’t come all at once. It started slow. A few polite claps. Then more followed until it became steady.

But it still wasn’t loud.

It was the kind of applause that came from people who didn’t quite know what else to do.

Upon stage, Ethan turned slightly and walked toward Evelyn and Everly.

He didn’t say anything when he reached them.

But they turned with him.

And the three of them walked off the stage together.

Not in a line. Not like they were being watched.

Just side by side.

They passed by the rows of recruiters. Some of them nodded. Some didn’t move. But not a single one spoke again.

At the exit to the back hallway, one of the attendants from Astralis stepped aside to let them through.

She didn’t try to guide them. She didn’t ask for directions. She just opened the door and lowered her head slightly as they passed.

Once they were out of sight, the room slowly began to move again.

Students shifted in their seats. Some talked. Some checked their phones.

But none of them forgot what they’d just seen.

At the far end of the stage, where the recruiters were still seated, the woman from Astralis didn’t leave immediately.

She waited until Ethan and the twins had disappeared through the doors.

Then she turned.

Not toward the host. Not toward the other academies.

But toward her own assistant, who stood silently behind her.

The assistant leaned in slightly and whispered, "Should I inform the professor?"

The instructor gave a slow nod.

"Tell her," she said, "that he accepted."
