Chapter 899 - 904 Abnormal Sound

Chapter 899: Chapter 904 Abnormal Sound

Her thoughts churned endlessly; ever since she nearly perished at the hands of Bald Donkey Liao Jue, she found herself innately repulsed by both monks and Taoists.

Qin Yueshi, however, seemed oblivious to any issues, "I’m not sure where they found that Mr. Yin-Yang, but his apprentices do seem rather professional. In any case, those clan uncles are handling it; we needn’t worry."

"Hmm, that’s true."

Su Pan’er nonchalantly nodded and buried her head again, continuing her work on the paper bull.

Occasionally, when she looked up, she found herself making inadvertent eye contact with Venerable Priest Liao Chen, who was performing rituals at the altar. Feeling her scalp tingle, she quickly lowered her head again.

In the days that followed, Su Pan’er deliberately avoided Venerable Priest Liao Chen whenever she could.

Yet, with the Clan Leader’s burial impending, Qin Yi absent, and as a third-grade authorized lady, it was inevitable for her to be present and follow the funeral procession.

The grave for the old Clan Leader had already been dug by the Qin Clan people, situated upon the ancestral cemetery hill of the Qin Family.

That ancestral cemetery hill was not only the resting place of the Qin Clan but also housed the ancestral tombs of the Su, Xue, Zhou, and Lui Families. From the top down, in the middle was the Su Family ancestral tomb, below which lay the graves of several other families, separated by pathways in the middle like... like an expansive spider’s web.

A spider’s web?

Su Pan’er furrowed her brow, the arrangement looking increasingly similar to the layout of an Eight Trigrams Array Formation.

She remembered her initial visit. With the Qin Family people so numerous, why didn’t they seek out a separate auspicious land instead of using this mountain range that was hardly ideal?

But now, with a closer inspection, Su Pan’er could discern many aspects that differed from before.

For example, if the Qin Family was the leading guardian clan, why was the Su Family ancestral tomb placed at the highest point?

Another example, the mountain, albeit barren, was a key passage to and from Deicide Mountain.

She suddenly thought about the dense underground array formations buried within Deicide Mountain. Could it be that the old Clan Leader also knew about this?

What a pity, what a pity. The old Clan Leader had passed away, and with his death, this secret might forever be entombed with him.

Leading the procession was Bald Donkey Venerable Priest Liao Chen, with Qin Da holding the spirit plaque, the eldest grandson waving the standard, another scattering incense paper from a small island, followed by eight strong men carrying the coffin, making their way toward the ancestral tomb amid the sounds of horns and drums.

Because she was pregnant, Su Pan’er maintained a distance, hanging far behind in the procession.

Once the old Clan Leader’s coffin was buried in soil, aside from those staying to construct the grave, the rest began to walk back.

Due to the belief that one should not look back, Su Pan’er did not turn her head at all from start to finish.

When she returned to the ancestral hall, she noticed the area in front of the hall was cluttered with all sorts of items piled up like a mountain, leaving hardly any space to set foot.

She casually walked toward the direction of the ancestral hall but heard a strange noise. The rustling sound drew her forward, leading her to the entrance of the hall. By chance, she saw that the wooden doors of the hall were slightly ajar. Hesitant, she heard the increased volume of the rustling noise and, driven by curiosity, gently pushed open the door, peeking inside.

The interior was as everlastingly quiet and dark, concealing whatever might be within. Nonetheless, Su Pan’er could still discern the Buddha statue she had seen originally.

The red silk that had adorned the Buddha statue was nowhere to be seen; an elusive glow seemed to flicker over the statue. Just as Su Pan’er scrutinized it more closely, it vanished. Curiosity drove her to step inside. As soon as her foot crossed the threshold of the hall, the wooden door behind her closed with a creak.

Unperturbed, Su Pan’er continued her slow stride forward, not hastening her steps until she stood before the Buddha statue and halted. She then looked up to meet the eyes of the statue.

That pair of Buddha eyes flashed with a compassion for all beings, as if they wanted to absorb one completely, rendering escape impossible.

She gazed at those Buddha eyes in a daze, forgetting where she was and even why she had come, simply staring silently into the Buddha’s eyes.

It wasn’t until she felt a pain in the spot between her thumb and index finger that she was able to snap out of that entrancement.

As soon as she did, she heard Little Yan Yan’s loud crying beside her.

"Mother! Woo woo woo... Mother, what’s wrong with you? Mother..."

When Su Pan’er came back to her senses, a wave of fright coursed through her body! The Buddha statue had the power to trap people in its sorrowful and compassionate gaze in the past; she hadn’t expected that, after so many years, its presence had grown even stronger! What was going on?

"Yan Yan, don’t cry, dear!"

Su Pan’er’s back was drenched in sweat as she hurriedly took Yuanyan’s hand and walked outside, "Let’s go, we’ll talk once we’re outside."

With that, she dared not look back, leading Qin Yanyan out of the ancestral hall as if ghosts were chasing them.

Without looking back, she naturally did not see that at the other end of the ancestral hall, another pair of dark and silent eyes had watched everything unfold from start to finish.

"Mother, what happened to you just now? You scared Yan Yan to death. Yan Yan called for you, and you didn’t respond; Yan Yan was so frightened... that’s why... that’s why..."

Little Yanyan couldn’t help but dab at her tears, clearly scared by Su Pan’er’s behavior just moments before.

She had been calling for Su Pan’er, then shaking her, until finally, she bit her on the spot between her thumb and index finger to wake her up. It would have been strange if she wasn’t scared!

"It’s nothing."

Su Pan’er looked up at the spot between her thumb and index finger but didn’t elaborate, "Mother was just lost in thought just now and forgot to reply to you for a moment. Are you hungry? Let’s go, I’ll take you to eat something."

Since the Clan Leader "went up the mountain" today, almost all of the Qin Clan people hadn’t slept much last night, busy from the second night watch onwards. They had left the doorway at the third night watch, and only now, as the sun was up high, they had returned.

Qin Yanyan had been so hungry she could feel her back sticking to her stomach, and when she heard this, she couldn’t be bothered with being upset anymore and quickly nodded her head.

"Mother, you should eat too, and the little brother in your belly needs to eat as well."

"Little Yanyan is really good."

The meals had been prepared long ago, and following tradition, any family hosting a celebration or funeral would cook a big pot of rice for a sit-down buffet. As Su Pan’er was pregnant, she did not wait for everyone to arrive and start eating together; she and Yanyan simply picked up a bowl and helped themselves to a serving.

While eating, Su Pan’er slowly recalled the events that had transpired after she entered the ancestral hall.

She remembered entering the ancestral hall after hearing a mysterious sound, but once inside, she had forgotten to check the many plaques and even the source of the sound!

Feeling her already sweaty back turn instantly cold!

According to what Yan Yan had said, there was a long period during which she hadn’t moved at all. If someone had attempted to strike at her from the shadows in that moment, she would have been completely defenseless!

Thinking this, she quickly grabbed Little Yanyan’s hand, "Did you see anyone else in the hall just now? Or hear anything? Did you see anything else?" As she spoke, she scrutinized her carefully, looking her up and down.
