Chapter 821: Chapter 800: A Moment of Life and Death! (Part 7)
Qin Yi had lately been feeling constant trepidation.
He once thought it was because he hadn’t rested well, but still insisted on arranging all the necessary preparations.
However, now someone came to report, "Young Master! Brothers have reported that Vice General Zhang unexpectedly took a small troop and headed northwest, instead of continuing southward."
Not heading south?
Qin Yi furrowed his brows in contemplation, thinking that this time Qin Zitong had really been thorough with his tactics, ensuring that those who came were all thoroughly familiar and understood him—this was no simple matter...
"Have you discovered the reason?"
"There’s no news yet."
"Understood, you may leave."
No news might be good news, after all.
Thinking of Jun Ruochen and Qin Feimo’s respective forces hurrying towards his location made his heart heavy.
Old Cheng beside him, however, concentrated and pondered for a moment, "Zhang Cann is adept at reading people and shifting allegiances with the wind. It’s unusual for him to do something this strange. Could there be something urgent that forced him to lead troops personally? Could it be..." Old Cheng suddenly stopped mid-sentence.
"Are you referring to Pan’er?"
His words caused Qin Yi’s heart to race, and he immediately stood up to pace quickly across the room, his steps getting faster and faster.
"No, it can’t be! How could Zhang Cann have discovered where Pan’er and the others are? By all accounts, he shouldn’t have been able to find Pan’er and her group, nor should he act this way against Pan’er..."
Halfway through his thoughts, Qin Yi stopped in his tracks.
He then gestured to the man, "There’s something I need you to do..."
After the man had left, Qin Yi was burning with anxiety but still forced himself to keep calm as he attended to matters, his worries mounting higher with each moment until he nearly stayed awake until dawn.
Xiao Min was exhausted after childbirth, and even though Lui Muyi carried her on his back, as night fully fell, they could not find a place to stay for the evening.
Instead, a distant howl as sharp as a wolf’s cry scared them considerably!
Thankfully, fortune favored them, and just when Lui Muyi was about to give up, he spotted a cave ahead.
The cave was not very deep, but it could shelter them from wind and rain, and even protect against attacks from wild animals. Lui Muyi, with Xiao Min on his back, entered the cave and wiped away his sweat, "Wait here for a moment, I’ll go fetch some dry firewood."
The mountains here weren’t pristine forests, but they were steep and densely wooded. It was June, and the wild animals in the mountains were ferocious. Not to wander off-topic, but if a wolf came out, it could end them all.
Hearing that Lui Muyi was going to leave, both of them panicked!
"Young Master Lui..."
"Don’t worry, I’ll be back soon."
Lui Muyi didn’t stop, but quickly stepped out, and soon enough, he really did drag some firewood back in.
Aunt Xiao and Xiao Min both sighed in relief.
Although they knew that Lui Muyi had been entrusted by his lady, they still feared that he might abandon them in the wilderness and run off alone...
Now that they saw Lui Muyi return, they realized that they had been suspicious of an honorable man with a villain’s heart, and both of their faces turned red with embarrassment.
"You light the fire first, I’ll go get some more firewood," Lui Muyi said.
As if he saw nothing of their reaction, without waiting for them to speak, he once again slipped into the night. After three such trips, with enough firewood stacked both inside and outside the cave, Lui Muyi finally dragged back several tender bamboo poles.
Aunt Xiao, uneasy about the occasional howls outside, decided to start a fire at the entrance of the cave.
As soon as Lui Muyi came in, he moved the pile of fire aside and then back to its original place.
After all, Xiao Min had just given birth, and the conditions were at present primitive; no one had the luxury to worry about anything else. She managed to feed the child and then fell asleep on Aunt Xiao’s shoulder.
She didn’t wake up until Lui Muyi came back.
In Lui Muyi’s hands, there was some food in reserve. After rummaging in his arms for a while, he finally found a piece of hard, dried bread.
He directly divided the bread into three parts, giving two of them to Aunt Xiao, with a suspicious dark red on his face.
"Try to eat a little."
It wasn’t that he grudged giving the food to them. Xiao Min couldn’t walk, and he had carried her on the run all the way. He was already tired, thirsty, and hungry. This one piece of bread wasn’t even enough to stuff his teeth, yet now it had to be split among three people. It was no wonder he was blushing.
Then he remembered Su Pan’er. If Su Pan’er were here, surely she would handle it well, wouldn’t she?
As he was lost in thought, Lui Muyi didn’t rest. He split open the young bamboo and indeed found a fair amount of clear water inside. He immediately pushed it to Aunt Xiao and the other to drink first.
"You should drink too, Young Master Lui."
Xiao Min hurriedly pushed the bamboo tube back to him.
"No need, I still have some!"
Lui Muyi quickly broke open another section of bamboo tube.
To say he wasn’t touched would be a lie!
Xiao Min had been carried by Lui Muyi for the whole day. The cave they were in now wasn’t very big. Worrying that Xiao Min might be cold, the three huddled close together, and Xiao Min felt an indescribable emotion in her heart.
Considering that she had just given birth and couldn’t drink raw water, she placed the bamboo tube on the fire to warm.
Lui Muyi watched silently, slowly chewing his portion of the bread with the little clear water in the bamboo tube, as if by doing so, he could make it last longer.
With something to fill their stomachs, they naturally felt less panicky.
Aunt Xiao also had the chance to slowly look at her newly born maternal grandchild by the light of the fire.
The little fellow was red all over, wrinkly, and sound asleep in the swaddling clothes, completely unaware of the adults’ ongoing fear of escape.
The more Aunt Xiao looked, the happier she felt in her heart, and she couldn’t help teasing him on purpose.
"Little brother, you have to remember, your life was saved by the lady. When you grow up, you must be grateful to her. Understand?"
Aunt Xiao hummed a nameless tune, gently rocking the swaddling clothes, lulling the child to sleep.
This child truly had a great fate, having come into this world after a dangerous and narrow escape! What a struggle it was!
Lui Muyi sat huddled on one side of the cave, silently watching her soothe the just-born wrinkly ball, ultimately not saying a word.
With two women by his side tonight, it seemed the lookout would have to be his responsibility. He saw clearly that while Aunt Xiao was still humming and soothing the child, he slightly closed his eyes for a moment. Not wanting to overtax himself, his usual self-discipline suddenly wasn’t working at all, and he fell deeply asleep.
When he was half-asleep, an innate fear from deep within jerked him awake.
He abruptly opened his eyes and realized that the fire up ahead had gone out, and at the mouth of the cave, two shimmering, inverted triangle eyes were flashing with a savage light, radiating malevolence.
That was...
"Ah! There’s a wolf!"
Lui Muyi immediately broke out in a cold sweat.
He had no time to think about anything else, hastily throwing some firewood onto the extinguished pile of fire, and also instinctively picking up a wooden pole lying nearby, standing up to confront the wolf which had already silently approached the entrance of the cave.
