Chapter 770: Chapter 769: The Empress Dowager is Seriously Ill_1
Su Pan’er pondered, "The Empress Dowager was fine during the Banquet at the Palace, how did she fall ill so severely all of a sudden?"
"What exactly happened? Eunuch Hao, please tell us in detail."
Qin Yi was also anxious.
Eunuch Hao was even more worried, "My lords, perhaps we should head to the palace first. As we walk, I can explain the situation to you, what do you think?"
Could it really be so urgent?
Su Pan’er agreed without demur, "Then please wait a moment, I will gather my Medicine Box and then accompany Eunuch Hao to the palace."
"Hurry up!"
Eunuch Hao repeatedly urged.
In no time, the two hastened to don their court attire and mount their horses. Su Pan’er also changed into the court robe of a first-grade noble lady conferred by Imperial edict.
Eunuch Hao briefly explained the situation.
"Since the onset of winter, the Empress Dowager’s health hasn’t been quite good. After catching a cold a few days ago, she felt unwell and had numerous Imperial Physicians called for. When His Majesty heard this, he came to visit..."
Eunuch Hao naturally didn’t communicate the exact reason behind the Empress Dowager’s condition. However, he instead relayed the minor disputes between His Majesty and The Empress Dowager in complete transparency.
It wasn’t that he wanted to tell this, but that he couldn’t possibly keep it secret, so he preferred to earn their good graces from the outset.
How much regard His Majesty had for his cousin, as Eunuch Hao who served His Majesty at His Majesty’s side for many years, how could he not be aware of this?
"The Empress Dowager is in a delirious state because of a high fever, shouting incoherently, not recognizing even His Majesty. The Imperial Physicians from the Imperial Medical Bureau take turns keeping a vigil at the Yangxin Palace, daring not to step away even for a moment. They are all at wit’s end, His Majesty is remorseful and distressed, and hence thought of Mrs. Hou, which is why he dispatched me to seek Mrs. Hou..."
Even though Eunuch Hao tried to be discreet, the meaning between the lines was clear to Su Pan’er.
Presumably, after those rumors started circulating, the Empress Dowager must have been holding onto her anger. Triggered by the external cause, her old disease must have flared up.
Qin Yi and Su Pan’er quickly exchanged glances, and calmed down.
"Is His Majesty still in the Yangxin Palace?"
Su Pan’er understood everything, though she still remained composed as ever.
"Yes."
Eunuch Hao seemed hesitant to speak, "This matter ultimately involves His Majesty and the Empress Dowager. I hope you can keep it confidential so as to prevent any rumors from spreading that could potentially harm the nation’s foundation."
"Rest assured, Eunuch Hao, we are not the kind of people to blabber.".
Su Pan’er naturally agreed, and Qin Yi repeatedly nodded his head. Su Pan’er then recalled a matter: "You mean, the Empress Dowager started feeling unwell a few days ago and now has a fever?"
"Yes, she has a high fever. It’s absolutely dreadful! I looked at her..."
Eunuch Hao hesitated to say, "His Majesty is young, and with the Empress Dowager’s illness, she is currently in a state of confusion without anyone to talk to. Mrs. Hou, being His Majesty’s close-blood cousin, I took the liberty and ventured of my own accord to seek your guidance for His Majesty. Please punish me if I’ve offended you."
"Eunuch Hao, you are completely sincere, there’s no need for any sort of punishment."
Su Pan’er nodded in acknowledgement, without saying anything more.
But, unbeknownst to anyone, she tightened her grip, even if Eunuch Hao was saying all this, could it be that the Empress Dowager really couldn’t hold on?
Soon Su Pan’er entered the palace with Eunuch Hao and went to Yangxin Palace.
Outside the Empress Dowager’s sleeping chamber, a line of Imperial Physicians were kneeling, their bodies shivering with heads touching the ground, not even daring to raise their heads.
Qin Feimo sat in a corner, with his head buried low, his entire being sunken in the shadows, not allowing anyone to see the expression on his face clearly.
Su Pan’er and her companion paid their respects from afar.
"Your Majesty, I heard that the Empress Dowager is not feeling well?"
Qin Feimo managed to lift his head briefly, only to lower it again without speaking.
When their hearts sank, they exchanged a glance before Su Pan’er spoke again, "Your Majesty, should I take the Empress Dowager’s pulse first?"
Qin Feimo only gave a slight nod, still not saying anything.
After thanking him, Su Pan’er approached the bed and gently walked up to the Empress Dowager before softly calling out.
"Empress Dowager, I am Su Pan’er. I’m here to treat you, I apologize if I offend you."
The Empress Dowager’s face was fiery red, her breathing harsh and teeth clenched, but she did not say a word.
Su Pan’er said ’excuse me,’ then checked the Empress Dowager’s wrist pulse. The feverish touch made her heart tremble. She quickly placed a hand on the Empress Dowager’s forehead and was immediately shocked by the high fever.
"Why is it so hot?"
She recollected herself and quickly ordered the palace maid, "You all go and prepare some things. I’ll be needing them soon. Also ..."
Su Pan’er rattled off a list of items that the palace maids needed to bring to her immediately.
Outside, the imperial physicians were whispering amongst themselves.
They had long heard that Su Pan’er held the title of "The World’s Best Needle"... these imperial physicians fancied themselves highly skilled but were disdainful of a woman who specialized in gynecology. Now they watched incredulously as Mrs. Marquis Zhenguo, Su Pan’er, dared to take over their failed treatment.
For a moment, countless eyes were fixed on Su Pan’er, waiting to see her fail.
Unfazed by their gaze, Su Pan’er opened her medicine box and a row of silver needles lined up in front of her.
Without any hesitation, she sat down at the bedside, helped the Empress Dowager sit up, and began applying the needles to several major acupoints on the Empress Dowager’s body.
The Empress Dowager grimaced in obvious pain, looking very uncomfortable.
"Bring the spittoon!"
Su Pan’er gave the order loudly, yet her hands never paused in their work. With each needle she applied, she exerted force into the Empress Dowager’s back!
"Ah!"
The Empress Dowager could endure no more. Her mouth opened wide, and she spat out several mouthfuls of saliva.
The palace maid holding the spittoon never had a chance to catch it and ended up spattered.
The imperial doctors were now all looking at each other with wide eyes, unsure of Su Pan’er’s actions. Even Qin Feimo, hiding in the shadows, lifted his head to witness her treatment.
"Step aside!"
Su Pan’er casually ordered the palace maid, then helped the Empress Dowager lie back down, and pat on her body!
The silver needles spontaneously floated up, and with a swipe of her hand, fell to the ground noiselessly.
Su Pan’er didn’t look at the needles, but picked up a new set, quickly inserting them at a speed that was too fast for the eye to follow.
The saying is ’the expert only needs to move, then we know’!
If the imperial physicians, who had been waiting to see Su Pan’er make a fool of herself, had any trace of luck before, now with Su Pan’er’s deft practicality, their faces revealed astonishment, watching her doubtful eyes. They couldn’t fathom Su Pan’er’s intent.
After all, the Empress Dowager only had a lingering fever, so why was Su Pan’er going to such lengths?
However, unconcerned about what others thought, once the needles were all inserted at the right acupoints, Su Pan’er knelt before the Empress Dowager, allowed her inner strength to flow out slowly, infiltrate through those needles, and began to circulate within the Empress Dowager’s body.
