Chapter 755: Chapter 754: Banquet at the Palace_1
Qin Yi, having prepared himself, entered to see Su Pan’er fussing so much and couldn’t help but chuckle.
"You’re not done yet. You’ve been out of the house for half a day. It’s not a life-or-death situation. Do you really need to be this upset?"
"Bah, bah, bah! None of this death or not death talk!"
Su Pan’er glared at him several times: "If you can’t say anything nice, it’s better to keep silent. Nobody will think you’re dumb."
Qin Yi, who just received an unwarranted scolding, raised his eyebrows and thought that Su Pan’er seemed a bit annoyed today. Thus, he quickly tried to catch up.
"Do you really don’t want to go to the palace? How about we just say we are feeling unwell and submit a memorial to His Majesty? I believe His Majesty will not take it to heart."
Su Pan’er paused then continued walking forward silently.
Having left the courtyard, Su Pan’er got into the carriage, the curtain was immediately drawn blocking Qin Yi’s view.
Qin Yi gave it a thought and decisively chose to abandon his horse and boarded the carriage as well.
"What are you doing in here?" Su Pan’er glared angrily at him.
"I want to accompany you," Qin Yi replied simply, but he reached out to take Su Pan’er’s hand.
Su Pan’er hesitated for a minute, then relaxed her stiff spine. Her emotions finally subsided and she slowly leaned into Qin Yi’s embrace.
"I’m alright. I just... simply don’t want to see him. Whenever I see him, I feel like I am a commodity in his eyes. That feeling...it’s particularly unpleasant!"
"That must be tough for you."
Qin Yi spoke softly, just quietly holding Su Pan’er in his arms.
By the time they arrived at the Imperial Palace Gate, both of their expressions had returned to normal.
The wife of State Duke Hwa, and his son and daughter-in-law also came. Seeing them outside the palace, Su Pan’er courteously stepped forward to greet them.
After they had exchanged pleasantries, a eunuch arrived to lead everyone into the palace.
The number of attendees for this Banquet at the Palace was not large. The emperor and The Empress Dowager had their seats at the head of the hall with two rows of smaller seats for the other guests. These led to around a dozen low tables, behind which sat Pu Tuan.
Having formally greeted His Majesty and The Empress Dowager with the others, Su Pan’er stood to one side.
Their arrival quickly attracted curious glances from many other attendees. Su Pan’er, standing behind Qin Yi with her head bowed, was the perfect image of a modest wife, neither looking up nor engaging in conversation.
Once everyone was present, His Majesty got up to invite all the guests to take their seats, carefully distinguishing between the hosts and the guests.
Su Pan’er also followed Qin Yi to take their seats at the third spot on the left side. To her right were Lord and Lady Liu Yankang. Su Pan’er was unsure whether this seating was intentional or a mere coincidence.
"Today’s Banquet at the Palace is to entertain the foreign ambassadors. That’s why we invited a select group of ministers and their families to share this Banquet at the Palace. Let’s not waste time with words. We can talk more after everyone has eaten."
Qin Feimo was the first one to pick up his chopsticks, serving dishes personally for The Empress Dowager.
Shen Mamma, who was standing next to The Empress Dowager, promptly stepped forward and brought the food served by His Majesty to The Empress Dowager. As His Majesty began his meal as well, the banquet officially started, and the rest of the guests began their meal.
During these days, Su Pan’er was having her period. She found that though the dishes at the Banquet at the Palace looked appetizing, most of them were cold. Even the two warm dishes were only soup dishes. She reluctantly picked a couple of dishes and barely ate.
Nearly everyone else was in the same situation.
Despite the big snowfall outside, the semi-cold dishes were hard to stomach.
Seeing that both The Empress Dowager and His Majesty had put down their chopsticks, the rest of the guests also did the same.
The Empress Dowager was laughing in a particularly amiable manner.
"After all, Lord Liu is not a stranger to us, we used to be in-laws. So, everyone should maintain harmony. All those matters in the court should be discussed by you gentlemen at the court. Today, let’s only talk about family ties, nothing else."
Liu Yankang stood up and bowed, with a look of reverence. "The Empress Dowager is right! We are all relatives. Today, I came to Jingzhao Prefecture on official duty, but also to visit my relatives."
As he spoke, he pointedly glanced at Su Pan’er.
Su Pan’er still kept her head down, as if she hadn’t heard him at all.
The Empress Dowager and His Majesty didn’t say anything, but Mrs. Hwa, the wife of State Duke Hua, spoke up.
"Are you the child from the Liu family? Who would have thought, you are all grown up now. I remember when you were just a baby, I and the State Duke went to your mansion to attend your Full Moon Banquet. But now, you’re already this big."
She is a true elder!
If someone else had said that, Liu Yankang might have answered back.
But seeing that it was Mrs. Hwa who spoke up, Liu Yankang seemed like a rooster choked up and silent. He managed a smile after a long while.
"I am honored that the elder generation still remembers me!"
"Don’t mention honor in this casual talk. Hardly does it happen that you visit the Jingzhao Prefecture, stay here for a few days. Come around to the mansion when you can, accompany me, chat about family matters, don’t rush to leave."
Mrs. Hwa smiled in a friendly manner, which made Liu Yankang’s mouth taste bitter.
He gave a forced smile and quickly agreed, "I dare not refuse the elder’s invitation. I will definitely visit one of these days, I hope the elder won’t find it bothersome."
"Not at all. It would be a pleasure for me if you could accompany me to chat. Ah?"
Mrs. Hwa laughed heartily.
The reaction from those around was mixed.
Su Pan’er quickly glanced at the Empress Dowager and His Majesty through her eyelashes, seeing how pleased the Empress Dowager seemed, she inferred that Mrs. Hwa’s words were likely orchestrated by the Empress Dowager.
Poor Liu Yankang, his forced smile suggested his predicament, as if he was riding a donkey and found it hard to dismount?
Suddenly, a pair of blatant eyes stared at her. Su Pan’er casually glanced back at the woman whose eyes were almost filled with tears.
This moment, she had tears in her eyes and her lips were trembling. When she saw Su Pan’er looking at her, she hastily smiled at her.
But the next moment, Su Pan’er turned her gaze away.
The smile on her face froze instantly, she made several attempts to speak, but no sound came out.
"Jie’er, I miss you so much..."
Her voice trembled visibly, her teeth clashed against each other, tears welled up in her eyes, evoking great sympathy.
Su Pan’er felt a mix of emotions, and her heart ached a little.
She was always unable to harden her heart to deal with this woman in front of her, that’s why she kept backing off.
She knew she should cover her ears and ignore it. But when she really spoke to her in what she thought was a whisper, she almost wanted to shout, "walls have ears!"
But in the end, she didn’t say anything.
"Pan’er, it’s your mother. Your father and I have come to see you..."
Her quiet sobbing continued, as if a pear tree was shedding its blossoms in the rain.
Su Pan’er sighed inwardly and simply turned her face to the other side.
