Chapter 450: Chapter 449 Joy of Harvest_1
Su Pan’er felt something amiss: "What’s the matter? Xue’er, you are..."
"Ah! Sister Pan’er, you might not be aware. Actually, I have been betrothed since my childhood."
Saying this, the smile on her face turned incredibly bitter: "It’s an arranged marriage, settled when I was still a child. I was at the palace with my mother when I unintentionally bumped into His Majesty. He looked at me and joked, ’This child has an aura of wealth and prosperity, seems to have a connection with our royal family, and I quite like her.’ Although these words were said in jest, a monarch’s words are always accordant."
"Then His Majesty arranged my marriage to the son of a prince, a boy who had been sent away for grooming since his childhood. I have never met him, and for all these years, I..."
A little girl’s life was set in stone because of a casual remark and an imperial edict from His Majesty.
From then on, she had no childhood.
She had to learn the arts of piano, chess, calligraphy, painting, poetry, lyric, and proper etiquette, as well as how to manage the rear courtyard of the prince’s mansion.
Often in her dreams, she would relive that moment over and over again, wishing she could turn back time and return to the moment that forever changed her life...
The sadness in Jun Ruoxue’s eyes pained Su Pan’er’s heart.
She quickly grabbed her hand and forcefully changed the topic, "I’ve recently started making some children’s clothes. Do you want to see?"
"Yes, yes! Where is it, let me have a look."
Seeing Jun Ruoxue’s enthusiasm, Su Pan’er hastened to bring it to her.
Su Pan’er rose cheerfully and fetched a small garment from the other side, "Look at this one!"
Although the garment was ostensibly made by Su Pan’er, it was actually cut out by her and stitched together by Mrs. Su-Hua!
Nevertheless, Su Pan’er was exhilarated, as this was the first piece of clothing she had ever made in her life.
"It’s really good, the stitches are very close."
Jul Ruoxue examined it and concluded, "But isn’t it too small? Can it be worn?"
"How big can a newborn be?"
Su Pan’er said, shaking her head with a smile.
As they were talking, they heard Jun Ruochen and Zi Lan from outside, and both of them hurried out to meet them.
As soon as he saw Jun Ruoxue, Jun Ruochen shook his head with a smile, "I guessed you would be here. Xiaoxizi caught a lot of loaches in the rice field, do you want to go see?"
"Catching loaches? Yes, yes! I want to go and see..."
Jun Ruoxue was about to run off at hearing this, but she remembered Su Pan’er and quickly looked back, "Sister Pan’er, they’re outside catching loaches. Do you want to join us?"
"You, the second there seems to be something interesting happening outside, you want to go out and play?"
Jun Ruochen shook his head helplessly, "If others heard you, wouldn’t they criticize you for not understanding the hardships of the common people?"
"Brother Chen, just let me go and play! After all, I won’t have much time to play soon..."
Jun Ruoxue’s voice trailed off, and she lowered her head.
A flash of sadness passed through Jun Ruochen’s eyes, and he reluctantly agreed, "You can go and see, but remember, you are not supposed to leave Zi Lan behind. Understood?"
"I know!"
Jun Ruoxue’s spirits lifted immediately, the speed of her mood swing made Su Pan’er question her own eyes.
"Sister Pan’er, let’s go! Let’s go together! It’s so boring staying in the house all day. Come on, let’s go!"
With that, Jun Ruoxue pulled Su Pan’er out of the house.
Ever since she was pregnant, Su Pan’er had been unusually lethargic due to morning sickness, spending the whole day either eating or sleeping.
On the rare occasions when she was not eating or sleeping, she would pass the time by reading, talking to her mother, or chatting.
Having not stepped out of her room in a while, she suddenly felt exhilarated when she did.
What a harmonious scene of abundant harvest!
Fields upon fields of rice shimmered gold in the sunlight. The faces of the hard-working people in the fields were lit up with joyous smiles, despite the weight of the pole loaded with rice bending them over.
On the grain-drying field, everyone was bustling about with enthusiasm - women and children alike.
There were scenes of busy bustle everywhere.
"Sister Pan’er, Sister Pan’er, hurry up, hurry up!"
Jun Ruoxue was laughing heartily, pulling Su Pan’er’s hand as she led the way towards a piece of empty farmland that had already been harvested.
Several small children, both boys and girls, equipped with little hoes, were present in the field.
Each of them was barefoot, carrying a wooden bucket in one hand and swinging a small hoe in the other. They were digging around in the field, pulling out fat, juicy mud eels from the earth with just a single scoop, before tossing them into the wooden buckets they were carrying.
Watching from the sidelines, Jun Ruoxue was leaping and laughing with excitement. Turning back, she grabbed Su Pan’er’s hand, shaking it non-stop.
"Sister Pan’er, let’s dig for mud eels too, what do you think?"
"You want to take off your shoes and socks and step into the field?"
Pointing out the challenge, Su Pan’er saw her shake her head and then made a suggestion: "Then let’s do something different!"
Saying so, she moved forward.
"What other fun things can we do, Sister Pan’er?"
Jun Ruoxue quickly caught up with her.
"Let’s go catch crabs to eat, how about it?"
Su Pan’er’s eyes gleamed with excitement. Though the scent of rice filled the air, it was precisely the time when crabs were at their fattest and most abundant.
"Great! Let’s do it! But how do we catch them?"
"How do we catch them? We go down to the river, of course!"
Su Pan’er had already set her sights on the crabs!
There was a small triangular sandbar near Lower River Bay where three rivers met.
Along the smallest of the rivers, Su Pan’er slowly bided her time. Soon, she extracted a large crab from one of the crevices by the river bank.
This instantly delighted Jun Ruoxue. However, she soon noticed something was a bit off.
"Eh, this isn’t a hairy crab. What is it?"
"This is a Sawtooth Chinese River Crab, a common variety. It’s delicious fried or steamed, but the meat isn’t as plentiful as that of the hairy crab. Of course, we also have mud eels here."
Just as Su Pan’er finished her explanation, she reached down and pulled out a mud eel from the sand, her actions causing Jun Ruoxue to burst into giggles again.
Zi Lan, who was nearby, followed their example and soon snagged a crab herself.
Su Pan’er had long since realized that for Jun Ruoxue, the point of this exercise wasn’t really the food—the crabs or the mud eels—but the fun of the chase.
As long as it was fun, everything was alright!
After grabbing a few more crabs and eels leisurely, she excused herself as being tired and led Jun Ruoxue, with their spoils of battle, back home.
Halfway home, they passed a small bamboo grove and came upon the children they’d seen before, digging for mud eels in another field. Even though this one didn’t have any water and the ground was cracked and dry, it didn’t pose a danger of people sinking into the mud.
Seeing how exciting it was, Jun Ruoxue rushed forward eagerly to join in the conversation with the children.
Watching the children teach her how to identify the burrows of eels and the way they wielded their hoes, Su Pan’er couldn’t help but laugh as well:
She really was just a little girl at heart, finding everything fascinating.
Her eyes swept over the scene and landed on Jun Ruochen as he slowly approached. Standing by her side, he apologized remorsefully: "Xue’er has bothered you again. I appreciate your patience."
