Chapter 30: Chapter 30 Homecoming gifts_1
The handkerchief in her hand was nearly twisted into a knot. If Qin Yi’s health hadn’t been so bad back then and if she had taken the initiative, would this great marriage proposal have fallen onto her?
"Really? Do you think you’re worthy?"
Su Pan’er didn’t want to engage in conversation, but these people were making too much of a commotion. Not responding was simply not an option!
Engaging in idle chatter with these young girls was a simple waste of energy!
Su Pan’er didn’t care about their antics and thought that conversing further with them would be a waste of breath. With a lift of her eyelids, she shot them a glance, brushed them off and, without looking back, followed Mrs. Su-Hua to the kitchen.
With nobody around, Mrs. Su-Hua quickly pulled Su Pan’er aside, "Pan’er, did you and the third son of the Qin family... did anything happen yesterday?"
Su Pan’er clearly understood what she was insinuating, but chose to play dumb, "Mother, what are you saying?"
"I mean... well, did..."
Despite Mrs. Su-Hua’s eloquence, she stumbled over this particular topic.
"Mother, are you worried that Qin Yi will bully me? You don’t have to worry about that!"
With victorious pride, Su Pan’er raised her fists at Mrs. Su-Hua, her face full of cheerful smiles, "Last night, I gave him a good beating. He spent the entire night leaning against the wall, too afraid to step out of line. Don’t worry, I won’t get bullied by him!"
Mrs. Su-Hua’s smile froze on her face!
She was left speechless.
Su Pan’er leaned in closer, curiosity on her face, "Mother, why do you look so pale? Do you feel unwell? Do you want me to check on you?"
More than just feeling unwell, Mrs. Su-Hua felt like she was falling apart!
Her face expressed deep despair! Looking at the zestful and triumphant Su Pan’er, any advice she could give was stuck in her throat and couldn’t be voiced!
Su Pan’er seemed unaware, and continued speaking, "Mother! You wouldn’t believe it! Qin Yi is no match for me; I knocked him down with just one hand. He’s so weak..."
Su Pan’er continued to chatter excitedly, but Mrs. Su-Hua’s mind had already drifted away to the pitiful Qin Yi.
Poor child!
Fallen victim to her own foolish daughter, how unfortunate!
This was all Su Family’s old man’s idea. If not for his forceful decision, it should have been Su Yue’er who got married, not Su Pan’er playing the substitute!
Just thinking about it brought tears streaming down her face.
At this moment, the very Su Yue’er being talked about by Mrs. Su-Hua was sobbing, with several cousins comforting her.
"This ugly and ignorant girl has gotten married, so she’s emboldened! She dared to be so disrespectful, she’s asking for trouble!"
Suddenly, Su He’er remembered something, "Didn’t that foolish girl bring a string of gifts earlier? I think they’re still at the kitchen entrance. I wonder what gifts she brought back. Let’s go! I want to see what good things she has got. Hmph!"
Given the Qin family’s poverty, they probably don’t have anything worth showing.
Su He’er’s suggestion immediately received agreement from the group.
Only Su Yue’er hesitated, "We’re... We’re all good sisters, isn’t this a bit inappropriate?"
"Sister Yue’er, we know you’ve always cared for that foolish girl. But don’t always think about her past kindness. You must have seen how arrogant she was today; she clearly doesn’t respect you."
Su He’er fired off a string of words without pause.
The conversation caused Su Yue’er’s smile to falter, and she dropped her gaze guiltily.
"I saw the gifts they brought right outside the kitchen door. Come on! Let’s go see... Here we are, let’s open it up and see."
Within the conversation, they had already reached the kitchen door.
In the corner, there was a basket backpack covered with a straw hat, on top of which were string of paper parcels.
Su Pan’er had sharp ears and had heard their sneaky movements. Seeing them rummaging through her gifts, a sarcastic smile crept onto her face, but she did not speak.
Mrs. Su-Hua was still immersed in her shock, looking dazed.
The kitchen became noticeably quiet, with no sounds to be heard.
"Hurry, open the paper bag... What is this? Is this a medicinal herb?"
As the first paper parcel was opened, revealing the item inside. Unfortunately, nobody recognized it. They passed it around, and finally it ended up in Su Yue’er’s hands.
Su Yue’er’s face changed slightly, but quickly regained composure, "It’s a Huangjing that is not very old. I had seen it when I accompanied Father in the county city, at the Clinic."
What she didn’t mention was that, though the Huangjing was only a few years old, it was still worth about an ounce of silver.
"Oh-- So it’s just a medicinal herb? That’s nothing special."
Seeing Su Yue’er treat it lightly, Su He’er carelessly discarded the Huangjing to the side.
Su Yue’er’s lips twitched involuntarily, and she couldn’t help but take a few more glances at the Huangjing.
Su He’er didn’t notice at all, clearly losing interest in the items in the paper bag and moving instead to the basket backpack. Quickly, she spotted the fat wild rabbit outside the backpack!
What a fat wild rabbit!
"Wow! What a pretty wild rabbit! Quick, let me hold it!"
"Give it to me, give it to me, I saw it first!"
Su He’er and Su Xian’er started to argue over it.
In the end, Su He’er snatched it, holding it up triumphantly for everyone to see, "Look! I was the first to hold it, its eyes are so pretty!"
Her excitement was as if she had raised the rabbit herself.
Su Xi’er had had enough, "Why are you holding it so tight? Hurry up and look in the basket, what else is in there?" Was this wild rabbit, a gift that that foolish girl brought back, worth them being so happy about?
After hearing Su Xi’s words, the others became slightly less enthusiastic. Su He’er quickly bent down to lift the straw hat off the basket and reached in...
Her hand immediately met with a cold and slick sensation!
Su He’er’s triumphant expression froze on her face.
"What’s going on? Hurry up and take it out! Let’s see what it is!" Su Xian’er urged impatiently.
Trying to act unconcerned, Su Yue’er couldn’t help but lean forward to try and peek into the basket, eager to see what was inside.
Su He’er jerked back to her senses and let out a bloodcurdling scream.
"Oh my god!"
