Chapter 24: Chapter 24 Don’t Blame the World for Having No Regret Medicine_1
The silver coin slid across the table, perilously close to falling into the soup bowl.
It rolled a few times, eventually stopping underneath the large bowl filled with cone-shaped cornbread and mixed grain porridge, and after circling twice, it came to a halt.
Old Qin’s face immediately darkened, and he coughed heavily twice.
Sitting nearest to the silver coin, Qin Shuan’er, being an extraordinarily good-natured child, swiftly picked up the coin and darted over to Su Pan’er. She shyly smiled at her, wanting to speak but then suddenly lowered her head, placed the silver coin on the table next to her, and ran back.
This despicable knave! Just a bit of food had bought her loyalties, who knows what kind of trouble she may cause in the future!
Glaring at Qin Shuan’er across the table, Mrs. Qin-Li gritted her teeth in secret, her anger extending to Qin Yueshi as well!
Qín Yueshi shuddered and curled up like a timid wife, daring not to utter a single word more.
Is this their idea of a greeting gift?
Su Pan’er raised an eyebrow in surprise. This corner silver coin was not even a quarter of the size of the silver nuggets in the medicine box!
"Quickly, take it! This is just a small token of our intention, ah!"
Old Qin chuckled twice and glanced at Old Li and the others nearby.
Regardless of the value of this corner silver coin, not many families could offer silver as a greeting gift! With this, he had aired out his pent-up frustrations from the entire evening.
Old Man Liew’s gaze swept over the silver coin: "Old Man Qin, you are really generous today! Unexpectedly giving your new daughter-in-law such a ’large’ piece of silver as a greeting gift, it’s truly rare, indeed rare!"
"It’s the right thing to do, the right thing to do for the newest member of the family!" Old Qin said with a slightly smug smile.
"Alright then, now that the in-laws’ greeting gift has been given, should the new bride not..." Old Zhang stopped halfway through his sentence, his eyes repeatedly sneaking glances at Su Pan’er.
Every new bride is supposed to greet everyone, serve tea to their in-laws, and give some form of greeting gift. But now, this new bride...
That matter also crossed Su Pan’er’s mind, but she feigns ignorance. Casually tucking the coin into her bosom, she purposely swallowed and asked, "When can we start eating?"
Old Qin was taken aback, a flicker of displeasure swept across his eyes, but he immediately broke into a hearty laugh: "We’re a humble family, we don’t fuss about much. Living harmoniously is what matters most. You remember that, old three, and make sure to soon give the Qin Family a boy."
Everyone burst into raucous laughter.
Su Pan’er remained impassive, while Qin Yi blushed and stammered, unable to formulate a response.
"Come, come, let’s eat. Don’t be shy." As he spoke, Old Qin was the first to pick up a piece of braised meat and eat it.
Mrs. Qin-Li trembled in silence, her face contorting. Her hand, gripping the bamboo chopstick, turned white, almost snapping the chopstick in two. She gave her a greeting gift and she still doesn’t kneel and bow to her? Did the old fool just let that fool off that easily?
How could this plain-faced, dark simpleton have caught the old man’s eye to the point of him protecting her like this?
Su Pan’er didn’t stand on ceremony, even if she wasn’t hungry, she still picked up a piece of yellow braised fish.
Hmm! It tasted really good, rich and fragrant, and so delicious that she couldn’t stop eating. The aftertaste was endless, quite the delight!
She couldn’t help but speed up the pace at which she was eating.
Everyone started to eat heartily. Despite their age, these olds folks didn’t hold back at all. Their speed wasn’t any slower than the younger ones! The large pot of yellow braised fish was soon empty.
The savory smell triggered resentment among the women, especially Mrs. Qin-Li!
Seeing Su Pan’er enjoying herself, Mrs. Qin-Li, mindful of Old Qin’s presence, couldn’t say much and felt more wronged and annoyed. She glared at Su Pan’er hatefully, her eyes bulging with such intensity as though they might pop out of their sockets. If a glance could kill, Su Pan’er would have been hacked to pieces by now!
She didn’t get to taste any of the meat at that table. Expecting a nice meal with fish at home today, she found instead that Old Man Qin, in an attempt to show off, invited the old blokes for drinks. Has he not considered that even most of their people hadn’t even tasted it? Even the most considerate Wan’er did not get to enjoy any good food.
She forcefully chewed on the tasteless wild vegetable mixed grain porridge, grinding and gnashing it as if she was chewing on Su Pan’er’s flesh!
Mrs. Qin-Li’s rage scared Qin Shuan’er, who was sitting at the end of the table. Her hand trembled, spilling the mixed grain porridge, which splashed onto Qin Wan’er’s skirt.
Qin Wan’er angrily threw down her chopsticks, kicked the stool away, and pointed at Qin Shuan’er’s nose as she shouted, "You’re asking for trouble! If you’re full, get lost! You’re a total visual mess!"
Qin Wan’er was frustrated, and Qin Shuan’er was in the wrong place at the wrong time, hence her outrage.
In the evening, when she should be nursing her wounds, the only leftovers were a half bowl of braised meat. Mrs. Qin-Li, despite her intentions to share it, found the portion too small to do so. Mrs. Qin-Li reluctantly gave her half a spoon of yellow braised fish, which she could not stomach due to its muddy and fishy taste. She reluctantly took a few bites before tossing the bowl. Qin Wan’er, who was always pampered even from young, has never endured such humiliation.
Thinking so, she glared even more at Qin Shuan’er.
Already frightened, Qin Shuan’er burst into tears after the scolding.
"Ahem... what’s with all this fuss? I just told you all to live harmoniously, why did you forget this so quickly? We can’t even have a peaceful meal, everyone sit down!"
Facing this chaos, Old Man Qin had to speak up.
Both Qin Wan’er and Mrs. Qin-Li, fearing Old Man Qin, sneaked a pinch at Shuan’er before satiating herself to sit down and picked up her chopsticks again.
"Uh! Woo woo..."
Qin Shuan’er got hurt, her weeping became even worse. She dared not cry out loud, quickly covered her mouth with her hands, and was pulled into Qin Yueshi’s arms. The mother-daughter pair was sobbing and hugging each other.
"Who are you putting up this show for? It seems like you two are oppressed by everyone in the world."
Mrs. Qin-Li sneered a few words, her critical eyes darting around.
Su Pan’er frowned, Qin Shuan’er had suffered a lot today because of her, and was now being mistreated by her own family. If she continued to sit idle, she wouldn’t be Su Pan’er.
"Shuang’er, come! Come to your sister!"
She immediately dropped her chopsticks, got up, and pulled Qin Shuan’er from Qin Yueshi’s arms to her own seat.
Qin Shuan’er had tears on her face and felt uneasy. She looked at Qin Yueshi, then at Mrs. Qin-Li and Qin Wan’er, who were glaring at her like vipers, and quickly bowed her head again.
Su Pan’er gently patted her back and smiled slightly, saying slowly, "Qin Wan’er, you better remember this! In future, if anyone dares to bully you, whichever hand they use, I will cut it off! If anyone doesn’t believe me, they are welcome to try!"
Her gaze lightly glanced over the crowd as she said each word slowly, "However, if anything happens... don’t blame me when there will be no regrets pill to buy!"
