Chapter 148: Chapter 148: I’m Afraid It Will Add Fuel to the Fire!_1

"An accident? What kind of accident?"

Su Pan’er and Qin Yi were surprised, echoing each other in unison.

An accident while being punished at the ancestral hall?

"It is...is said that they, that they saw a ghost last night..."

Qin Yueshi mumbled incoherently.

Su Pan’er and Qin Yi exchanged glances, turned their heads, and stared at Qin Yueshi without speaking.

"It’s true!"

Qin Yueshi hastily defended, "Early this morning, I went to the ancestral hall to deliver food to mother-in-law and second sister-in-law. Unexpectedly, I saw several clan elders surrounding the hall. I sneaked beneath the window to take a peek. As a result, I heard my mother-in-law and the second sister-in-law wailing and causing a ruckus, claiming that a ghost was haunting the ancestral hall last night and it scared them to death. The female ghost had hair that reached the ground and there was blood all over the floor..."

At this point, Qin Yueshi paused and looked at the two of them.

Su Pan’er was incredibly surprised!

If the news about the ancestral hall being haunted gets out, this will turn into a big mess!

Qin Yi also frowned, "What did the clan elders say?"

"I saw them arguing severely, so I quietly hid to the side. Later, the elder clan leader arrived, scolded the two women, accusing them of disrespecting our ancestors and the elders! The manifestation of spirits of our ancestors signifies that they had instructions, but instead, they were frightened by it, and this caused an additional punishment for both of them, extending their original punishment from three days to a week. They are also not allowed to participate in the upcoming Qingming ancestral worship."

This has become a big issue!

Qin Yi’s face changed, "Is it that serious? Did the elder clan leader say this himself?"

Qin Yueshi nodded slightly.

She hesitated, looked at them, and lowered her head, "The main thing is, they not only spouted nonsense in the ancestral hall, but also, also, also..."

She stammered for a long time, but couldn’t bring herself to say it.

"Did they lose their bowel control?"

Su Pan’er spoke for her.

"How did you know?"

Qin Yueshi exclaimed.

"Isn’t it obvious? If people are scared badly enough, they usually soil themselves. I suppose the ancestral hall was a mess by then?"

Su Pan’er replied casually, able to imagine the chaotic scene at the ancestral hall.

But the chaos they described strangely resembled a dream. Could it be... this incident had something to do with the kitten?

No, that can’t be!

Su Pan’er instinctively denied it. That damn lecherous pig had long since vanished! And it would help her take revenge?

No way!

That doesn’t seem like something that lazy pig would do at all!

"It was a total mess! Sigh, the elder clan leader and the elders were all mad. They even called for father and scolded him harshly. I couldn’t even send them their breakfast. The clan leader has decided to starve them for two days. They will only be allowed to eat after they have cleaned up everything at ancestral hall."

Qin Yueshi looked at them, her words hanging in the air, "Third Uncle, Third brother’s wife, what do you think about this..."

"What do you want us to do, sister-in-law?"

Qin Yi, as always, was perceptive and asked directly.

Qin Yueshi mumbled, "It’s ok if they stay in the punishment for a few more days, but starving them for two days, that’s too... Third Uncle, third brother’s wife, could you perhaps plea on their behalf to the elder clan leader, so that I can deliver their meals?"

Su Pan’er looked deeply at Qin Yueshi.

This Qin Yueshi seemed anxious, but her eyes were clear.

"Sister-in-law, I’m afraid we’re powerless in this matter."

Qin Yi frowned, "Pan’er and I have little influence, and mother and the second sister-in-law were punished because they behaved disrespectfully before the ancestors’ plaques. If we step in, would it be considered as disrespecting the spirits of the ancestors or questioning the elder clan leader’s decision? This might just add fuel to the fire."

Su Pan’er was surprised. She didn’t expect this bookish guy to be so clear-headed!

After giving it a thought, Qin Yueshi agreed and looked at them, helplessly stood up and headed for the door.

Considering everything, she said, "In that case, I’ll go back."

Then she turned back, "Actually, it was... my father-in-law who asked me to discuss this with you."

After saying this, she left quickly without stopping.

"Mother, Mother, wait for me..."

Seeing her mother leave, Qin Shuan’er hurriedly followed.

Su Pan’er watched as the mother and daughter pair quickly walked out of the courtyard and down the village road. Only then did she turn her attention back to the things she had bought.

Qin Yi sighed and sat beside Ke’er.

"I knew something was strange about my sister-in-law today, turns out it was my father who sent her."

After speaking, he fell silent.

Su Pan’er raised an eyebrow, took a glance at him, and continued to sort through the peas, picking out the largest and fullest ones.

"This is your domestic matter, so you deal with it."

She didn’t want to earn the reputation of inciting father-son conflicts.

Speaking of it, his father-in-law is indeed strange. Since he had come out of the ancestral hall, he must’ve pleaded with the clan leader and elders. Since his pleadings were of no use, turning to them... there was some deeper meaning worthy of consideration in this matter!

"What do you mean ’yours’ and ’mine’? What’s mine is yours, we’re a family, no need for so many formalities!"

Qin Yi glared at her a few times, then turned to walk into the kitchen. "Tomorrow is Qingming, we can’t cook then. I’m going to prepare the things needed for tomorrow so we won’t be in a rush."

Su Pan’er looked at his retreating figure, only smiled faintly but didn’t reply.

Ke’er, curious, looked at her and then at the door, and scampered over.

"Fourth Sis, was that evil old woman scared by a ghost yesterday? Is it? Is it?"

"Stop talking nonsense! These are not words you should say. Behave! Play by yourself for a while. I’m busy."

After saying that, Su Pan’er took the peas she had sorted and followed where he had gone, into the kitchen."

"Hmmph! You don’t have to tell me, I heard it all."

Su Ke stuck his tongue out at Su Pan’er’s retreating figure. He was not a little boy anymore.

In the kitchen.

Qin Yi was busy at the stove, wearing a small apron which gave him a rather domestic look.

Su Pan’er watched him for a few moments before entering the kitchen.

"Eh, why did you come in?"

Qin Yi was battling with the civet meat in his hands, he looked up and asked when he saw her come in.

"I’ve sorted the peas. Do you need my help?"

Su Pan’er placed the peas to one side. Seeing that the cast-iron pot was already set up and that there was a piece of fat at the bottom of the pot, it was obvious that they had just started a fresh pot. The corner of the kitchen had an old earthen stove that had been empty until now.

It was finally being put to use.

"Your help? No need. You can go sit outside for a while; I can handle it."

He didn’t want any extra trouble.

"Haven’t you heard the saying, ’men and women together make the workload lighter’?"

Su Pan’er walked over to one side, noticing a basin half-filled with white flour, "Are you planning to knead dough?"

Qin Yi wanted to deny it, but considering that Pan’er was strong, he hastily nodded his head, "Absolutely! We need to fry some meatballs and other foods to fill our stomachs. Additionally, we need to steam face cakes for tomorrow since we won’t be able to cook."

His hands never stopped working.
