Chapter 1403: Chapter 39 So Cold...
"Why did the front courtyard take the young master away? Wasn’t the young master always living with me?"
Su Xian’er’s face turned pale as she asked anxiously.
The caretaker slightly lifted his head, glanced at Su Xian’er, then quickly lowered it again, as if deliberating what to say.
"Just say it! Don’t try to fob me off with your excuses. After all these years, you surely understand my temperament very well."
Since her marriage and taking charge of the entire Lui Family’s Mansion, Su Xian’er knew the caretaker before her very well. She could tell from his look what was coming next. On usual days, she might have the patience to listen to his explanations, but now, she just wanted to know the final outcome.
The caretaker lowered his head, bracing himself to reply, "Madam, it is, it is the master’s decision. The master said, now that the young master has returned, the young master should spend more time with the little one to foster their father-son relationship. So he sent me to take the little young master over to the young master’s house to cultivate their bond."
As he spoke, he stole glances at Su Xian’er’s face.
Su Xian’er’s body swayed slightly, her face deathly pale, a brilliant smile suddenly bloomed on her lips.
"Did the master say when the little young master will be returned?"
"The master... he did not..."
The caretaker stammered.
Su Xian’er’s steadfast posture could no longer hold; her legs gave way, and she slumped into a chair.
"No, it can’t be, it can’t be..."
She murmured to herself.
The caretaker stood with his hands tied aside, took two gentle steps forward, and spoke in a low voice, "That’s not all. The master means... now that the young master is back, the businesses of the Lui Family’s Mansion you’re managing, he would like you to hand them over to the young master for his sole discretion. So... so I’ve come to get the keys to the storeroom."
His words came in waves, piercing Su Xian’er’s heart with a throbbing pain.
Suddenly she stood up and ran outside.
"Madam, please be careful, it’s pouring rain outside... Madam... Madam..."
The caretaker’s shouts were already ignored by Su Xian’er, her mind a blank slate.
The torrential downpour continued relentlessly; Su Xian’er was completely drenched as if she’d been dragged through the water. Unaware, she sprinted towards the main hall.
There was no trace of Lui Ming in the main hall, Su Xian’er urgently grabbed a servant nearby and demanded, "Where is the master? Where did the master go? I wish to see the master."
The maid was clearly taken aback and took a while before replying.
"Madam, the master had something to attend to today, he left the mansion early in the morning. He said he would return tomorrow."
"Return tomorrow? To think he won’t be back until tomorrow..."
Su Xian’er muttered to herself, pushed the maid aside, and ran out again into the torrential rain.
The wind howled and rain pelted down, creating puddles everywhere. Su Xian’er had lost one of her wooden clogs, but she couldn’t care less, wading through the water unevenly, all the way to the central courtyard where Lui Muyi was temporarily residing.
The page boy in charge of guarding the door stepped forward to stop her.
However, the authority she had established over the years in managing the Lui Family’s Mansion had already instilled respect in the servants’ hearts.
With a stern look, the guarding page boy no longer dared to stop her and could only watch helplessly as she entered the central courtyard.
The central courtyard featured a u-shaped corridor, soaked by the torrential rain, with outdoor plants swaying wildly in the wind.
Through the cascading sheets of rain, Su Xian’er peered through the corridor and into the opposite side where an open window showed a man and a woman standing with their backs to her. They appeared to be talking about something, but too far to see clearly, Su Xian’er could only watch as the two of them seemed to be enjoying pleasant conversation, laughing non-stop.
Her eyes stung and reddened, unable to distinguish whether the moisture on her face was rain or tears, she merely stared helplessly at the two figures in the rain.
Completely at a loss.
Suddenly, the backs turned towards her moved!
The man patted the woman’s shoulder, and then they held hands and walked into the inner room, gradually disappearing from the window and out of Su Xian’er’s sight, leaving her unable to discern what was happening inside.
Su Xian’er stood drenched, water dripping continuously from her hand, forming a pool of water on the ground around her.
"Madam, are you here to find the young master?"
Lui Muyi’s page boy came trotting over: "The young master is currently resting, Madam, please wait a moment, let me go and inform the young master."
Resting?
Su Xian’er turned her head to look toward the window that had just been open.
In just a short while, the two window panes had already slowly closed, shutting out everything from inside the house.
Su Xian’er’s breath suddenly halted, and a taste of blood and sweetness rose in her mouth.
She clenched her teeth, nearly unable to breathe, yet unwilling to let her weakness show even a bit: "Where is An’er? I want to see him!"
An’er, Lui Han, his childhood name Huai’an, was the name of the boy she and Lui Muyi had together.
"Madam, the young master is not here."
"Not here? How could that be..."
"Madam, is there something wrong with the young master? Do you need me to inform the young master?"
The page boy was exceptionally diligent, and because of this, Su Xian’er appeared even more disheveled.
"No need, you go about your own duties!"
Su Xian’er nearly fled in panic.
See him?
With what status should she go to see him?
She once made a huge mistake, nearly causing her family’s downfall. Fortunately, the mistake had not fully taken shape, and there was still a chance for her to turn over a new leaf.
But today suddenly she understood, one false step leads to a thousand errors! No matter how well she did, with that dark history, everything she did... could be easily erased!
People could not see her effort, could not see her remorse, no matter what she did it was wrong...
Suddenly, her heart filled with despair.
A chill rose from her heart to between her eyebrows, so cold that she couldn’t help but huddle her arms, her body uncontrollably trembling.
It’s cold, so cold...
Bone-chillingly cold!
Stumbling, she turned and walked back.
The sky’s torrential downpour seemed to weep for her as well, the rain pouring down so densely that one couldn’t see the figures on the other side.
"What an odd Madam, braving such heavy rain..."
The page boy scratched his head in confusion and turned back into the house.
Inside the house, Lui Muyi was discussing a painting with Annie.
"Don’t even mention it, Annie, you have indeed improved very fast in your painting. Just a few months of learning and you already have this level of skill, truly impressive," he praised repeatedly.
His words made Annie so delighted she couldn’t stop smiling.
She continued with a laugh, her exotic accent palpable: "Stop picking on me. My painting skills are all due to your teaching. To say it’s good, using a phrase people from the Great Zhou Dynasty say, one must possess self-awareness! I still have a lot to learn!"
"Annie, you’re too modest. You should know, I rarely praise anyone. And you, you’re the only woman I’ve praised who I haven’t scared away with my scolding!"
Annie seemed a bit troubled: "I’m telling the truth."
"Yes, yes, yes, you’re telling the truth!"
Lui Muyi laughed loudly!
Then, turning his head back from time to time, he gazed at the closed door, seemingly lost in thought.
