Chapter 1344: Chapter 1344: The Purpose of Prince Wei
"Cease!"
A stern voice of rebuke suddenly approached from afar.
Quickly, countless troops appeared in a flash and completely surrounded the entire house.
In an instant, the whole house became a scene of turmoil.
It was a quiet night at the end of autumn and the beginning of winter, and a faint mist lightly drifted in midair, casting a shadow over everyone’s eyes.
The man in the black robe, having received the news, hurried to the center of the courtyard and saw the newcomer giving orders and commanding his men to put down Qin Shuan’er.
"Prince Wei really carries a great air about him!"
The man in the black robe hadn’t arrived, but his voice came first, "Even on old man’s territory, such grandiosity. Prince Wei is indeed Prince Wei, truly like a deity’s fart—extraordinary indeed!"
He couldn’t help but let out biting mockery as he raged out of the house.
This sudden turn of events caught Su Ke and Qin Shuang’er off guard, especially Qin Shuang’er. Once freed, she immediately curled up, trying to flee but was seized by two elite soldiers, left unable to move.
Prince Wei, who was directing his subordinates, finally stood still and slowly turned around.
Like stars crowding around the moon, his eyes and brows were bright and his presence commanding.
Looking at the figure that stood a few steps away in front of him, he smirked coldly and then took his time to flick his sleeve before he leisurely began to speak.
"Mutual admiration, Old General Cheng, your might is as formidable as ever! The prince often hears how Old General Cheng was invincible on the battlefield, an accomplishment that caused me to be neglectful of your fame!"
With that, he even feigned a proper fist salute.
Only the mocking curl of his lips betrayed his true feelings.
"Hmph! Prince Wei brings up old matters—do you intend to settle old grievances with this general?"
The man in the black robe raised his hand and took off his hood, revealing Old General Cheng as he looked up at Prince Wei.
Old General Cheng clearly didn’t hold the other man in high regard, his eyelids lowered, not even glancing at Prince Wei.
"That incident of the past is probably nothing but hearsay to you. You should know that the truth often lies hidden within what you think your eyes see. Without this general back then, I reckon you wouldn’t be standing here speaking to me now!"
With a single sentence, the smile on Prince Wei’s face vanished suddenly, and his eyes filled with a brooding darkness.
However, in the blink of an eye, he regained his usual refined and gentle demeanor, laughing heartily, "Old General Cheng speaks rightly. But the past is the past, and now is now. As the saying goes, ’Thirty years on the east bank, thirty years on the west bank,’ and it is also said, ’A brave man does not dwell on his past bravery.’ Old General Cheng remains vigorous in his old age, why cling to these shadowless matters like a gossiping woman? Besides, my visit this evening was to discuss urgent matters with Old General Cheng."
"Discuss matters with me? With this, this..."
Old Cheng pointed at the chaos around them, questioning Prince Wei, "Is this the etiquette with which Prince Wei comes to discuss with me?"
Prince Wei had brought a large contingent of troops, and at that moment, they all stood around him. Even without looking outside, Old Cheng could imagine the chaotic scene out there. Especially since his house had so many hidden arrows and traps set up, now with Prince Wei bursting in like this, even if they weren’t exposed, they were likely almost destroyed.
How could he not be infuriated?
"Look at what Old General Cheng is saying, what does this little house even matter? If Old General Cheng fancies it, how about I gift you ten such houses?"
Prince Wei flicked his sleeves and, paradoxically, quickened his pace as he stepped forward, "Old General Cheng, I do indeed have a matter to discuss with you. How about... we find a different place to talk? What do you think?"
Old General Cheng looked at Prince Wei and then directed his gaze to Qin Shuan’er, whom Prince Wei had rescued. He snorted coldly and, without another word, turned and walked away.
Prince Wei smiled indifferently, gave a meaningful glance to the guard beside him, and upon seeing the guard nod, he followed Old Cheng.
"Sit down!"
Old Cheng gestured to the chair opposite, then smiled wryly at Prince Wei, who had just stepped inside, "You’d better hope that you truly have something to discuss with me. Otherwise, hmph! Today, you might find it easy to enter this house but not so easy to leave!"
How could he allow such risks as someone who knew all his secrets to remain in this world?
If anything amiss were discovered, he wouldn’t hesitate to add a few more lives to his tally. He was prepared to nip any danger in the bud.
"Rest assured, you will definitely find the matter of great interest!" said Prince Wei, who calmly took a seat and refrained from continuing. Instead, he waved his hand, ordering his attendants to withdraw. Seeing this, Old Cheng’s eyes narrowed slightly, and he too signaled for his followers to back off.
"Speak! What exactly do you wish to propose?" Old Cheng personally poured some refreshment for Prince Wei, topped up his own tea cup, and then made a beckoning gesture.
Prince Wei, however, didn’t move but chuckled instead, somewhat frivolously, "The reason I came here tonight is because I want to make a trade with you! A trade where you’re guaranteed to win and not lose!"
Old Cheng’s expression darkened, and he put down the tea cup he was holding onto the table with a loud clang.
"If Prince Wei wishes to delay, then carry on. I have instructed my men that if we two have not exited after a few minutes, panic may have set in outside, and it might be hard to hold back the weapons in their hands."
Prince Wei gave a light laugh.
He then shook his head and fell silent.
Old Cheng wasn’t in a hurry either, he quietly sat there, lightly tapping his fingers on the tabletop.
As things became increasingly tense, Prince Wei could not help but sigh helplessly, "The situation is like this..."
While the situation at the riverside house was strained, Su Pan’er and her group were also anxiously waiting for news atop a small hill.
Fortunately, the wait was not long, and news came through, "Empress, the scouts have finished their investigation and relayed the message. Lord Su is indeed inside the house, and at the moment, there’s no immediate threat to his life."
Hearing that there was news about Su Ke at last, everyone’s faces brightened.
At last, there was a clue!
Su Pan’er was particularly overjoyed and quickly ordered, "That’s wonderful! We finally have news of him. Send orders for all forces to gather at the house. We must rescue Lord Su!"
"Empress, please contain your urgency, better to clarify the situation in detail before acting," Cao Imperial Historian quickly interjected. The deputy officials also nodded in agreement.
This made Su Pan’er somewhat embarrassed, "I lost my composure! Upon hearing news of Ke’er, I forgot everything."
"It’s the concern that clouds judgement, Your Majesty. No harm done," the Cao Imperial Historian and the others understood her feelings and quickly continued to question the messenger, "What are you still waiting for? What have all of you discovered? Who is inside, and how many forces has the enemy got? Report back in detail immediately!"
