Chapter 1236 - 1148: The Issue Overlooked by Su Pan’er
Chapter 1236: Chapter 1148: The Issue Overlooked by Su Pan’er
Su Pan’er sighed heavily.
She didn’t know if it was because she was approaching her due date for pregnancy health or not, but recently, she had been feeling melancholic and sentimental, unsettled by even the smallest things.
"Third auntie, you don’t need to worry, Su Ke... he has been clever since he was young, and has never let third auntie down. I’m sure this time will be no different; he will certainly win back face for you!"
Qin Shuan’er spoke with certainty, but her heart was far from calm.
"If only that were true. I fear that child is too stubborn, not giving up until he hits the Yellow River, and even if he runs into the South Wall, he won’t turn back! Ah, there’s nobody by his side to look after him, how can I be at ease?"
When it came to this matter, Su Pan’er’s brows furrowed tightly.
"Why don’t I take a trip out of the palace to check on things?"
Qin Shuan’er’s words carried a cautious tone and a deep-rooted concern, "I have been staying in the palace for so many days; it’s time to return home so my parents won’t worry."
Although she had been residing in the palace, she was particularly anxious about the results of the palace examination and regretted her decision to enter the palace.
If she were still outside, she could do as she pleased and it would have been much easier to gather information. How could she end up like now, confined within the palace walls and unable to move freely?
"Mhm, you are right, it’s time for you to go back and check."
Su Pan’er gently patted her hand, completely unaware of the concern in her expression, "Although it’s not urgent at the moment, it’s time to start preparing your dowry. Third auntie has also prepared a set for you, so when you marry, it won’t tarnish our Qin Family’s reputation, and it’ll prevent you from being bullied at your mother-in-law’s house."
"Third auntie..."
Qin Shuan’er called out softly, lowering her head in a feigned shy manner, her heart, however, sinking further.
"Alright, alright, third auntie won’t say anymore, won’t say anymore."
Su Pan’er chuckled and smiled at her, "Go get ready to leave the palace. The palace has also prepared some snacks for you to take back to your parents. Oh, and I’ve prepared a little gift for Su Ke. Help me deliver it to him."
With that, she turned back to Nanny Xiao and gave the instructions.
As soon as Qin Shuan’er left the palace, the smile on Su Pan’er’s face faded away.
She had heard that Su Ke had seduced Qin Shuan’er and had repeatedly questioned her, but Qin Shuan’er firmly refused to say anything.
But from Shuan’er’s behavior just now, could it be that something had happened between them without her knowledge?
Why wouldn’t the child tell her the truth? If she truly had something with Su Ke... If it were true, and Shuan’er and Su Ke truly loved each other, she would definitely stand on Shuan’er’s side.
As for the marriage arrangement on Shuan’er...
Su Pan’er rubbed her aching waist, and before that matter, the issue with the marriage arrangement had to be resolved.
In this day and age, it was different from the future: forgiving towards men but strict with women.
Although she had ordered silence on the few who knew about that matter, once something leaked out, it would be Shuan’er’s reputation that was destroyed. Once an unmarried woman lost her reputation, how could she hold her head high in the days to come? Difficult!
Various thoughts raced through her mind, but she never considered the generational issue that concerned Qin Yueshi and Qin Shuan’er.
It wasn’t surprising!
Having lived in the new era for over twenty years, Su Pan’er naturally didn’t regard such issues of seniority as important.
In her view, since Su Ke and Qin Shuan’er had no blood relation and were not collaterally related within three generations, as long as the two fancied each other, their union would be a natural course of action.
And these were the critical factors constraining the thoughts of both Qin Shuan’er and Qin Yueshi!
Because of such hesitation, it had resulted in Qin Shuan’er getting engaged today, creating an embarrassingly difficult situation to extricate herself from.
Su Pan’er was entangled with worry inside Wangxiang Tower while all over Shengjing City, people buzzed with speculation.
In previous years, the posting of the results after the palace examination usually occurred just after noon, but as time ticked by, with the sun gradually sloping westward from its zenith, even as the period preceding mid-afternoon approached, there was still no sign of activity at the gates of the palace.
The once noisily excited crowd grew increasingly agitated, turning their discussions back to when the list of successful candidates would be posted.
Many with connections promptly sent their attendants or family servants to gather information. They needed to know the cause of the commotion to get the most up-to-date details.
Yet, Su Ke and Xue Qian remained impressively calm, and even Feng Jiu and others seated next to them made no move.
On the contrary, Qin Hui and others became restless.
Qin Hui, being older, retained some composure, but Qin Hua beside him couldn’t stop making a fuss.
"Su Ke, the list isn’t posted yet. Could it be that something has happened inside the Imperial Palace? You’re familiar with His Majesty; why don’t you go and find out what’s going on?" Qin Hua suggested.
"There’s no hurry; there’s still plenty of time," replied Su Ke nonchalantly.
He didn’t move, still leisurely picking up small dishes from the table with his chopsticks and eating.
Xue Qian beside him was also unmoved.
He was busily nibbling on a chicken foot in hand, seemingly oblivious to the crowd’s eager stares, and instead crunched away with gusto.
"Mm, these chicken feet taste great! We should come here again next time... Oh, wait! When we leave later, let’s get the cook to pack a portion for each of us to take away, let them taste it as well. The flavor is rich and fragrant. Utterly delicious, absolutely delightful!" He nodded emphatically, finishing his thought.
Having waited so long, the initial round of food and drinks brought to the table had all been consumed by the crowd. The current spread was brought by the waiter later on.
"Why just chicken feet? Try it with these pot stickers. And having some of this soft bean curd would even enhance the flavor."
Su Ke earnestly passed another stack of pan-fried buns.
The pot stickers were pan-fried dumplings that were usually arranged in a flat pan, with a bit of oil brushed on the bottom to prevent sticking, then water—and sometimes vinegar—was added and covered to steam until cooked.
The soft bean curd was silky and tender. How this restaurant prepared it was a mystery, but the taste was delicate and refreshingly smooth, delicious. Most importantly, one portion wasn’t too much, and it quickly hit the bottom when eaten together with the chicken feet and pot stickers.
"You’re the only one with such an appetite! Can your stomach even handle more?" Xue Qian complained.
"Why wouldn’t it fit? I could eat another portion without a problem. Waiter, another bowl of soft bean curd for me, please!" Su Ke called out loudly.
"Alright, please wait a moment, young master."
The waiter responded with a cheerful grin: "Our soft bean curd is famous far and wide, and along with these pot stickers, it has become one of Shengjing’s most distinctive flavors. Once you’ve tried it, I’m sure you’ll come back for more."
The rest of the group was stunned into silence as they looked at the two unfazed figures, then couldn’t help but roll their eyes heavenward.
Please, didn’t they see that everyone was waiting?
To think they could remain so nonchalantly showy!
Fortunately, it wasn’t long before news arrived that the palace examination results had finally been posted.
