Chapter 217: Showing The Spartans How Romans Work
Morning came in a flash as the tired bodies and souls of the Romanus legions the previous days battle and work afterwards was rough however after a good nights rest the men had recovered considerably, even Julius himself awoke while still sore however rose up and began his prep for the days tasks.
The Romanus legionaires began taking down the encampments and instructed their prisoners to do the same as the tens of thousands of men began to break camp and prep the gear for a new long march.
The logistics corp meanwhile was hard at work cooking for the vastly increased number of consumers.
The Spartans meanwhile awoke to see the hustle in both Roman camps were quite shocked, just what had happened to require such efforts so early in the morning?
The answer provided was simple, orders from command.
As the packup was finalizing itself Julius’s forward camp within the former Greecian camp was visited by the Spartan King Leonidas.
"Young General Julius, just where do you and your men think you are going?" <King Leonidas>
"This battle is won, but there are other battles out there, our scouts had reported that there are more armies marching upon your lands, and so we go to meet these foes and once the fight is done fufill our pledge and drive a wedge into their own lands and stake a claim to bring them back into the fold as true nation states that belong to the world not that fight against it." <Julius>
"Hmm" <King Leonidas>
His own men had been fighting for weeks... no months on end, this single victory would grant his men a much needed repreive however this warrior king not stand to hear that their ally in this fight would be marching off to another fight while his own men were taking it easy.
And so the Warrior King did the unthinkable.
"Well in that case since my own army cannot be marshalled to fight, me and my personal guard shall join you to ensure no foulness befalls you so long as we remain within our lands." <King Leonidas>
The king having said so aloud did not wait for a reply one of his own men having heard took off running back to their own lines likely to call for volunteers to follow their king.
"So only yourself and a personal guard shall join us? What of the rest of your men?" <Julius>
"The army shall remain here for a time they’ve been fighting quite a long time and deserve a brief rest, some shall escort the prisoners back to the capital and with that we should be able to free up more men to take arms and join us in the field of glorious battle." <King Leonidas>
"I see well we shall be setting out in not much time hopefully that won’t bother you?" <Julius>
"Even if we setoff behind you we shall certainly catch up without worry" <KIng Leonidas>
Ha Ha ha Ha
The king ended his brief discussion choosing to walk away laughing while his Romanus allies had proven their moxy and prowess the Spartans still remained the greatest fighting force in all the world in his eyes.
"That’s certainly a joyous King?" <Yuri>
Having come out of her hiding place after being told the Spartan’s had arrived, Yuri revealed herself once more to Julius.
"Any King who’d managed to save his own people would be pleased, and it shows he’s a great king that he wont force his men to march off with us only requiring the volunteers to join him personally" <Julius>
"Just feels like he mimicing yourself to me... Joining your now larger army with his small force much like you did days ago to him, in the hope they could achieve as great if not greater than merit as you and the praetorians did in this battle." <Yuri>
"Well we certainly did not do it alone, your own contributions were vastly more in most cases than my own" <Julius>
"That’s a lie and you know it, but... no nevermind" <Yuri>
The poor girl was still weak to flattery, her face lightly reddened even at the slightest bit.
"But the King is wrong about one thing, his men might be good fighters but they will get a shock after they see just how efficient our Legionaires really are. We’ve been training the men for months to build up their stamina and the distance we can march in a day will surely be larger than the spartans, even accounting for the slaves we’ve picked up our pace should still outpace them." <Julius>
As this is a war we shall not wait for the King and his men but simply march on, maneuverability is key in warfare we shall not slow ourselves to allow the greecians their chance to dig in or find the most optimal battlefield for themselves.
We shall be like one massive war machine, the Legionaires will be the vanguard, while the slaves shall be our logistics corp, we could use these captured men as a slave army but their performance is lackluster at best being only meat shields to water the battlefield with their blood.
"We’ll be heading north to meet up against the Argosian army at the pass, if we can get there before they can we’ll be able to make defensive fortifications, and setup some ambush’s and traps to increase our own odds, and in doing so increase our own number of captives, while this time we won’t be required to share them his his Highness either" <Julius>
"So we bit by bit be capturing not only the enemy nations lands and cities but even their own armies as well?" <Yuri>
"Not much point in taking over lands only to then require ourselves to spread our own armies thinly just to defend them, better to have the locals protected by their own men, lead by competent commanders." <Julius>
"Guess all that will remain is choosing an able govenor to manage the territory then?" <Yuri>
"Perhaps we should choose you? I bet you’d look good all gussied up in Greecian frippery!" <Julius>
"YOU!!" <Yuri>
Having been chased out of his own command tent, Julius hastily walked away off to meetup with his men and check on the progress of the packup and aquire his own share of the morning meal.
