The dust of war was finally settling, and the complete control over the Port city and recently newly ordained capital of Lunan, Intin was secured under the occupying forces of Latinum and their Commander in Chief Julius.
The forces occupying the city did not cause life in the city to change that much in terms of bad news, but instead, there was an upwelling of public support behind the new ruler as the soldiers aided the citizenry in fixing what was damaged during the events of their invasion.
Some even helped with skills from before they were a soldier to aid in the building of new hand-pull carts and wheelbarrows, others assisted in the fields or entering the forest with hunters to continue securing food for the city itself.
Meanwhile the black zone, the lord’s mansion was anything but quiet.
The gates into the mansion were barricaded and no exit was possible to save for attempt to abscond over the walls surrounding the estate itself, but the loyalists within knew their situation was untenable, they had at best 500 defenders, nobles, and servants but the food stored in a single estate could not possibly support such numbers, and so at first they decided rather hastily to release all the servants and slave within reducing their numbers of non-essential personal, when this fairly large number of people attempted to leave the mansion they were instructed to wait at the gate before being allowed to leave.
Julius was summoned and using his Unit Inspection he checked the status of everyone present, all but 2 were processed and allowed to leave the estate grounds.
Those found to be slaves whose master was abolished, or those showing affiliation with Lunan but not directly to a noble of any standing.
As for the remaining two, they were quickly refused as the soldiers declared to their faces that the nobles in hiding were not allowed to pass for they would surely only flee to summon forces to harass the citizens or incite discourse and attempt an uprising within the city itself.
These two men were embarrassed they had lowered themselves to dress like servants and slaves but their disguise was seen through immediately so with no choice they were forced to return.
Return to a life now much harder than any they’d experienced before, as they had let go of everyone who kept that estate running, water would run out soon and those who used to fetch it were now gone, those who cooked, cleaned, prepared the baths.
By getting rid of those people in favour of those who could fight and resist possible attacks from outside these Noblemen and Women had reduced themselves to a living state below that of most commoners, they were in effect no better than slum dwellers squatting in the lord’s mansion.
But the residents of the manor mattered little to Julius, they could continue to live on however they wanted so long as they never left their dwelling.
Julius’s attentions were instead turned to the City of Intin itself.
The city had become a shadow of what it could be, a port city, and the sole port city of a large nation like Lunan this city should have been a bustling trade city but instead, the lords had allowed progress to stagnate.
So as this city was a much better port city than Nova Carthago or even the underdeveloped port city in Bridget.
As he needed a place to further enhance his economy and store his navy, Julius began a process of expanding the harbour, the existing harbour was a simple L shape but Julius’s expansion created a new shell shape floating port in the shallower parts of the bay with a series of raisable drawbridge’s allowing for boats at the inner port to exit into the oceans.
This would also allow for a defensible position wherein the Military ships could be protected as the outer port would need to be breech first while the ships in the inner port could act similarly to a second wall or a series of towers long-range forces could be mounted on to attach possible naval invasion forces.
The build points in his possession dropped but the new port was created and all his ships could be housed within with space for even more to come.
Moving on Julius continued his plans to revitalize this city, erecting a new seat of local power to replace that of the Lords Manor, this City Hall as Julius opted to call it was the new place of legislative power, an a local election was called within the city wherein a Mayor was elected and councillors likewise were appointed to assist him.
Julius vetted all the appointed men to ensure their loyalty as well as that their intelligence and command skill levels matched those required to properly manage such a large city.
Next was the creation of a three storey Manor building that was the local seat of the merchants guild, following that was a second manor for the travellers guild.
These two allowed for the standardization of prices and methods for buying or selling goods beyond simple bartering, and allowing for better travel plans to allow even commoners to safety book passage abroad or across the lords domain and the travellers guild would be responsible for locating adequate guards to protect their paying customers.
Finally as a show of earning their loyalty and injecting life into the local economy Julius and his subordinates handed out a compensation package to the citizens are each was paid for their loss of ability to work during the occupation of their city, and for the loss of their property, mainly in the form of carts and horses that were gifted away to the Germanic forces who removed themselves from the city.
The people were more than happy to accept this bribe as even those who’d lost nothing gained money, and those who did lose something had it replaced with better equipment made by the soldiers and then money on top of that.
The new lord is truly generous!
