I’m Really Scared -
Chapter 76: Ubiquitous
Guan Shan explained the situation with Qin Deguang to Han Liangjun and suggested they report it to the police.
Since Han Ying had not returned to Han's village, there were only two possibilities.
The first possibility was that Qin Deguang hadn't lied.
In that case, Han Ying and her daughter must have encountered some misfortune on their way, causing them to lose contact.
The second possibility was that Qin Deguang had lied.
If Han Ying and her daughter hadn't left, why did he lie, making people believe they had left? Why hadn't there been any sounds from Han Ying and her daughter in apartment 704 since that day?
The answer was probably obvious, but Guan Shan didn't want to think that way.
However, when Guan Shan thought of the eyes that had stared at him from behind the door of 704, he felt a chill.
Han Ying and her daughter... were likely in grave danger.
Han Liangjun stood in a daze for a long time before nodding, "Alright, alright... we'll call the police right away, that beast Qin Deguang!"He showed anger. "I told her back then not to leave, wasn't it good to stay in the village? In the end, she was harmed by that beast!"
Han Liangjun immediately pulled his wife to report to the police... Oh, there was no need since the police had already arrived due to the fire.
However, Guan Shan felt that their anger mostly stemmed from Han Ying's elopement rather than her being harmed.
After all, Han Ying had eloped seven years ago and never returned, practically severing ties with them. Judging by Han Liangjun and his wife's attitudes, it probably had been a very unpleasant parting.
They were undoubtedly sad, but not devastated.
And what about Han Ying? What was she thinking when she resolutely left Han's village with Qin Deguang, spending seven years away and then disappearing in apartment 704?
Where could she be now?
The light of dawn gradually illuminated the village, but was there anyone left in the darkness, unseen?
Shen Dinghua woke up shortly after dawn. At Han Liangjun's invitation, she and Guan Shan went to rest temporarily at their actual home in the farmhouse area.
Feeling heavy-hearted, Guan Shan organized the photos Shen Dinghua had taken and his conversation with Han Liangjun, writing an article which he then sent to Li Zhiying for editing.
Ultimately, an article titled "A Village Fire Connected to an Apartment Miles Away" was published.
Don't blame him for being a bit clickbaity. In the current new media landscape, if the headline isn't attractive, it won't gain traction.
Moreover, attracting more attention could bring more clues about Han Ying and her daughter.
"Hope they just took a detour and went somewhere else," Guan Shan prayed.
On his way back, Guan Shan called the number Xia Lei had given him. Surprisingly, a young lady answered instead of Xia Lei.
But thinking about it, it made sense. Xia Lei, being of such high rank, wouldn't be handling such matters personally. There had to be a dedicated department for this.
Guan Shan was just trying his luck, but after explaining the situation, the person on the other end immediately agreed to Guan Shan's suggestion of compensating the villagers using the official title, saying there was no need for him to pay, as they had a budget for it. They would send someone over soon.
While Guan Shan was still pondering how soon "soon" would be, the firefighter team leader, who was preparing to clean up the fire scene, received a notification to pause their operation as there was an emergency elsewhere needing their assistance. Another team would come later for the village.
As the firefighter team left, the Special Security Group's logistics team arrived to take over.
To ensure they could respond at any moment, the logistics team had been following Guan Shan.
Even if he hadn't called, they would have come to take over soon.
This squad had been following Guan Shan all along, reporting his movements to Xia Lei while Lin Shuman stabilized her abilities.
The squad captain held an energy detector, moving through the charred remains, his face growing serious. "There's a strong energy signature, reaching C7 level. The one who came should be a Drone Bee."
"To kill a Drone Bee-level Esper head-on, his strength is probably even higher than Captain Gao's..."
A tall, thin team member surveyed the exposed ruins, puzzled. "But... where's the body?"
Yes, where was the body?
Everyone in the logistics squad had this question.
The collapsed ruins were clear, with all the charred furniture, floors, and walls in view, but there were no signs of a body.
Given the remaining energy signature, it didn't make sense for the body to be missing...
The squad captain moved into one of the smaller rooms, using the energy detector, sometimes bending down or sticking close to the walls. His expression grew more and more concerned.
The team members sensed something was off. "Captain, what's wrong? Found any clues?"
The squad captain took a deep breath, "I think... I found where the body is."
He pointed to the floor.
A team member asked, "Underground?"
The captain shook his head and then pointed to the walls.
The team member was stunned. "In the walls?"
The captain's finger circled the room, pointing at the charred marks, "These... are all him."
Switching tools, he scraped off a small piece of what looked like charred marks. The harder pieces crumbled quickly.
The squad captain felt his scalp tingle. He picked up a small fragment, saying, "This... is probably his skin."
Other pieces were soft and sticky...
The squad captain swallowed involuntarily, "And this... is his body."
All the team members instinctively stepped back, horrified, feeling their stomachs churn.
As they looked at the room again, they realized that the entire floor and walls were uniformly covered in such charred material!
The team members trembled, unable to imagine how a complete person could be turned into such a state...
Seemingly vanished, yet actually ubiquitous.
