I’m Really Scared -
Chapter 209: Don't You Agree, Guan Shan?
"Back then, we were still in high school, around the start of sophomore year. I gave you a little duck. Do you remember?" Shen Dinghua's words interrupted Guan Shan's memories.
Guan Shan paused, then nodded. That was the second time she celebrated his birthday, the first formal one.
The first time, in middle school, Shen Dinghua didn't know it was his birthday and had casually shared her cake. It made sense she wouldn't remember.
But the high school incident was different. She formally celebrated his birthday and wished him a happy birthday. As for why the gift was a little duck, it was simply because Shen Dinghua liked it.
Although she said it was because "Xiao Shan is like this duck, silly and clumsy," he remembered her mischievous look, clearly teasing him.
Guan Shan smiled softly, "Of course I remember. I still have that little duck in my bathroom."
Shen Dinghua blinked, hugging his neck. "But I didn't see it when I showered earlier, and I didn't see it last time I visited. Did you lose it?"
Guan Shan paused, feeling a pang of guilt. "It can't be... I kept it in the bathroom..."
He looked at Shen Dinghua, who stared back at him.
His voice grew softer. He carried Shen Dinghua to the bedroom, then rushed to the bathroom. He searched frantically but couldn't find it anywhere.
His heart sank. "Is it really gone? But I always kept it here. There's no way it was stolen..."
Shen Dinghua appeared at the bathroom door, wrapped in a jacket, and held his hand, shaking her head. "If it's lost, it's lost. I'll get you a new one."
Guan Shan felt reluctant. "But..."
Seeing Shen Dinghua's gaze, he reluctantly agreed. "Alright, I'll look again later. Let's rest for now."
Shen Dinghua hugged him, looking up. "It's just a little rubber duck. It's old anyway. Does it really matter that much?"
I just don't want you to be upset...
Guan Shan pinched her cheek. "If I didn't care, wouldn't my Xiao Shen be mad?"
Shen Dinghua playfully clawed at him. "Then I'll have to eat Xiao Shan!"
She looked so small and soft, like a playful kitten.
Guan Shan considered, "Eating me isn't impossible... Maybe in a different way?"
Shen Dinghua hummed noncommittally, "Get my parents' approval first."
That's something I should plan for... Guan Shan knew Shen Dinghua's parents, being elites, wouldn't trust their daughter's future to just anyone. He needed to prove himself.
Previously, they were more lenient because of his achievements at the paper and Li Zhiying's support. With Chief Li's help and the Special Security Group's backing, it should be fine.
"What happens after that?" Guan Shan teased.
Shen Dinghua pretended not to understand, giving him a sidelong glance before slipping away like a rabbit. "We'll see."
Guan Shan, amused, watched her blush and escape. She's so cute...
Guan Shan made a bed on the floor, letting Shen Dinghua sleep on his bed. In the middle of the night, he got up quietly and went to search the bathroom for the missing duck.
"I know it should be here..."
He searched thoroughly but found nothing, feeling increasingly frustrated. He even considered asking the Special Security Group.
"Does it really matter that much?"
Shen Dinghua's voice came from the door. Guan Shan looked back to see her standing in the dark, head tilted.
He sighed, "It's different..."
"I feel bad. You always remember my birthday, but I lost your gift. I couldn't take care of something so important. I'm afraid you'll be sad."
Shen Dinghua approached, pulling the little duck from behind her.
She placed it in his hand, smiling. "I took it while showering. I did it on purpose."
Guan Shan held the duck in silence.
"Are you mad?"
Shen Dinghua squatted down, supporting her chin. "I've tricked you many times. Every time, you believed me without question."
"Sometimes, I wonder why."
She looked down. "Is it because of me, or because I'm Shen Dinghua?"
Guan Shan didn't fully understand but sensed a rare vulnerability in Shen Dinghua.
However, Shen Dinghua was Shen Dinghua.
Shen Dinghua touched the duck's head. "Xiao Shan's heart is like this duck. It seems I can take it easily, but its owner will always find it and take it back."
Her fingers walked to his chest. "Its owner is so persistent, crossing mountains to find it."
She looked at him deeply. "Don't you agree, Guan Shan?"
Guan Shan was speechless. Xiao Shen's tone was unfamiliar yet oddly familiar.
A thought crossed his mind...
Shen Dinghua smiled, asking softly, "Are you mad?"
Guan Shan, exasperated, thought, She's right. I can't stay mad at her.
He shook his head. "No."
Shen Dinghua sighed. "Xiao Shan is mad."
Guan Shan said, "Really, I'm not."
Shen Dinghua held his hand. "You just don't want to show it. But I want you to be mad, to do something bad to me. What should I do?"
Guan Shan took a deep breath, trying to pull her up. "Stop joking..."
Shen Dinghua pushed him, and they both fell into the bathtub, hitting the shower handle.
Water poured down, soaking them. The broken handle turned the shower into a fountain.
Guan Shan wiped his face, looking at the broken handle. He laughed awkwardly. "Uh... looks like we need to fix this."
