Chapter 75: Cracks In Paradise...

(Kira’s POV)

_________

I was still seated on the bed as Lena stood at the doorway staring at me, I watched as her eyes fell to the phone. Trying to keep my movements as subtle as possible, I reached out and picked up my phone, using my tow to pull it closer to myself until I had it in my hand.

Lena walked further into the room, coming to sit beside me on the bed, "babe, what was that?"

I let out a sigh, "it was nothing. Just work. You know."

She looked at me, keeping a straight face, "Come on, that didn’t seem like a ’nothing’ to me."

"But it was," I assured her. "I’m handling it."

However, her expression remained stoic, showing that she clearly didn’t believe me, "what the fuck, Lena? You know how it is! Beacon Studios have been stressing the fuck out of me lately! Have you also forgotten that I had to visit my uncle today and basically railroad him? This is just the after-effects of that visit, okay?"

With a muffled curse, I got off the bed and stormed out of the bedroom. I just didn’t want her to be too close because I didn’t know how long I could hide the truth from her. Lena was insightful enough and if I wasn’t careful, she could figure easily through my own actions. I couldn’t let her know that Maven had contacted me and given me my first task. She would want to know more and once she figured out that Maven was using her to get to me... I didn’t want to imagine just yet what her reaction would be.

I made my way to the living room where her laptop was still on the table, but it was now asleep. Lena followed me right out.

"Aren’t you cooking or something?" I asked, trying to get rid of her.

"Aren’t you supposed to be in the kitchen with me?" she asked me back, and now, I could see anger was beginning to seep through her firm posture. "What the hell is going on that you can’t tell me about? You’ve never hidden stuff from me before, and now it seems like you’re going out of your way not to tell me."

"That’s not what it is, Lena." I replied with a sigh, "It’s just a minor issue and I’m handling it, I promise you! I just don’t want to bother you."

"Bother me?" She stared at me in shock, "are you seriously thinking about that now? Shouldn’t you have been bothered when I put my career repeatedly on the line for you? I didn’t go to work today because I was running a fucking reconnaissance mission for you, one that if I had been spotted by Jace would have been the end of my career! You didn’t mind bothering me with that, did you?!"

"Come on, Lena." I got to my feet and hurried over to her. I took her hand and squeezed them, "come on, baby. You can’t say such things. I’m trying my best out here to de-escalate this situation so that you and I can be happy. That’s all I want, why can’t you see that? You’ve already done enough, I can’t keep burdening you with more of my work problems!"

"You’re my girlfriend, you’re supposed to share these things with me. What else am I here for? Just to run errands for you and give you orgasms?"

"Lena?!" I was shocked by her words.

She wrenched her hand from mine and stepped away, "what am I even saying? I’m not even your girlfriend, am I? Not when the world knows you’re getting married to Jace. I’m just the other woman who would never get her time in the sun."

"Please Lena..." I whispered, reaching for her hand but she stepped out of reach.

"I put something on fire." Without another word, she turned and walked away, making her way back to the kitchen.

I remained rooted to the spot as I heard her heavy footfalls march all the way to the kitchen. I closed my eyes as I let out a deep breath. This was not going according to plan at all. The last thing I wanted was for my issue with Maven to drive a wedge between Lena and me, but then, that was exactly what was happening! How the hell was I going to get through this if the one person I was doing it for was pissed off at me?

However, I didn’t follow her. I simply turned around and lowered myself onto the couch. Maybe now wasn’t the time to try and fix the situation, I needed to give her time to simmer, later tonight, I would fix it. However, meanwhile, I knew just what to do.

I pulled her laptop closer to myself and brought it back to life. The window was still open on the footage that Joan had given her. I glanced around to make sure that I was alone, then I began to watch it. The first few hours were empty with nothing happening. However, I saw the moment that Jace’s convoy was followed out of the hotel by a stalker. I also watched Casey walking with me to my room.

I could remember just how much of a wreck I had been that night thanks to my Uncle and she had been really helpful. The footage played on, showing when she eventually left my hotel room. Then, I saw it. Lena walked right into my hotel room. The angle of the footage didn’t show Lena’s face, however, I could see Maven where he was situated as he recorded her. Lena would have walked right past him when she was arriving and leaving my room. She probably knew who the fucker was.

Also, if he had been that close, then he would have a clear video or picture of Lena entering my room and leaving it.

I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach as I fell back on the couch, Maven had not been bluffing when he said that. He really did have evidence. I know that Lena had walked in with a copy of the hotel room key that I had given her, and if that was caught on camera, our relationship would be the obvious reason people would jump on.

And this was exactly what was putting me at the mercy of Maven.

"Oh shit," I muttered as I got to my feet and began to pace my living room. I soon walked onto my porch, looking out into the quiet streets that were beautifully decorated with dozens of lights. I sucked in the fresh air, closing my eyes.

At this point, I knew that I was beaten. Maven had me where he wanted me and if I was going to win in any way and keep all this from turning into a scandal, I had to play along. For now.

I took a seat, pulled out my phone, and began to scroll through. I browsed some of the top shopping centers in Parallel City. Thankfully, there were not a lot. If Maven wanted me there tomorrow, I was going there with a plan of my own. There was no way I was going to allow this to play out on his terms alone.

As I browsed through the shopping malls, I saw that the majority of them were for grocery shopping, high-end fashion brands, and the usual family stuff. Of course, they were nothing compared to the stores that we have here in Silicon Valley, but I was certain that it was going to be one of the other.

But then, what if I was making a terrible mistake by not telling anyone? Parallel City was far from Silicon Valley, if anything happened to me, how the hell would people going to find out? What if the shopping was only just a ruse to get me out and away so Maven could do what he wanted?

"That would be good..." I muttered into the darkness.

At this point, I genuinely wanted to meet up with this guy. I wanted to stick my fingers into his eyes and scratch them out. I wanted to hurt him so badly so he could feel the pain I was going through right now. Threatening me with a scandal, trying to take Beacon Studios from me, and driving a wedge between Lena and me. I wanted to meet the motherfucker and make him pay.

Once I was satisfied, I dialed a number on my phone and placed it on my ear as I listened to the dial tone. The line rang for a while before it was answered.

"Yeah?" A gruff voice said on the other side.

"Tate..." I said at once, "It’s Kira."

"Oh... holy shit! Is it really you?" He cried over the phone.

Tate was an old friend from college, he was a mutual friend with Zayn and like her, he also had an affinity for the shady dealings.

"What the fuck, girl?" Tate said, "I thought you already forgot about me or something."

"Uhm..." I stammered. "It’s not that... I just... uh..."

"Come on, Kira." He chuckled, "We’re not kids here, it’s not like I called you either. Although, I think I lost your number or something, so my excuse flies. Yours doesn’t though because you clearly still have my number. But none of that is important; I know you’re calling because you want something. What is it?"

I sighed with relief at his blunt tone, this was one thing I could count on with him. He never got overly dramatic, unlike Zayn.

"I’m in a bit of a jam, Tate." I said as I held the phone to my ear, "I need some help."

"Okay, what do you want?"

"When last did you visit Parallel City?"
