Chapter 33: More Bad News!

(CASEY)

________

After leaving Paragon Park, I was deeply unsettled. I couldn’t take my mind off Kira and her weird behavior. I noted how she had been when I first arrived, she was scared and rattled, terrified of even her shadow. The idea that she was being blackmailed had frightened her, I had never seen her so scared before.

But then, she entered her bedroom and returned a different person. It was as if whatever she did in there changed her totally, and when she returned, she suddenly looked capable of handling whatever it was. And sadly, that was what was most scary. I had seen this part of Kira before and I knew just how stubborn she could be. It was clear that she had already made up her mind about what to do with regards to Maven, however, I just didn’t get why she was reluctant to tell me her plans.

With a sigh, I gripped the wheel tight as I guided my car into the neighborhood. At this time of the night, the streetlights were on, dazzling the area and giving it a beautiful view. While it wasn’t Paragon Park, it wasn’t a slum either. As a matter of fact, living in Silicon Valley was always a financial achievement for whoever could afford it. Buying a house in this neighborhood was a feat and one that I was still proud of, considering where I was before now.

I reduced the speed of my car until I pulled into my yard. The lawn was perfectly mowed, and there were beautiful flowers in pots lined up against the wall. I killed the engine and sat in the quiet car for a few minutes, staring at my front porch. I was in a big mess and nothing was going according to plan.

When I took on this job, I never imagined that things would escalate to this point. I never knew that I would fall in love with Jace or even become the target of a blackmailer. But now, I’ve done it all, and there was a mysterious fellow out there who knew way more than was comfortable.

"Oh fuck!" I groaned as I slapped the wheel in frustration. "Why did I have to fuck Jace?"

If I had never gone to the King’s Boulevard last night, none of this would have happened and I won’t be so terrified right now.

"No..." I muttered as I shook my head slowly. I couldn’t have resisted it, just like I couldn’t have resisted him. I needed last night to happen. I thought that once we made love with him, I would be able to get the hunger for him out of my system. But I was wrong. Every moment I spent with Jace only made me want him even more. It was bad enough that even at his office, I couldn’t fend off his advances.

I was powerless when it came to Jace. And for that reason, working together was always going to be a bad idea. It was also why we couldn’t continue seeing each other.

"Oh fuck this!" I cursed as I pushed my door open and stepped into the chilly night. The fragrance of the flowers was heavy on the air, and I sucked in a deep breath, closing my eyes to savor the sweet smell.

Just then, I remembered Maven and my eyes snapped open at once. I looked around my neighborhood, but the streets were empty and well-lit. Anyone lurking around would have been exposed at once. However, I wasn’t pacified. Holding tightly to my purse, I locked my car and hurried into my house.

As I locked my front door behind me, my phone began to ring.

"Oh come on, what is it now?" I muttered irritably as I turned on the lights in the living room, revealing my nice plush space. This was the first time I was coming home since I left for the Royale Hotel, so everything was turned off. I had to go about turning them back on while I pulled my phone from my purse. When I checked the screen, I saw that Joan was the one calling me.

I frowned at once, I had come to learn not to ever expect good news from her.

"Yeah?" I said when I answered the call. "Please tell me you don’t have another depressing update."

"Well, I can keep this from you, if you’d prefer." She replied, her voice crisp and elegant as always.

With a grunt of frustration, I threw my purse on the couch as I held the phone to my ear while turning on the air conditioning unit.

"Let’s have it," I told her.

"Our security team has been scrubbing through the footage, looking for every angle that we can of the stalker outside Kira’s room. As far as we’re concerned, he’s the only suspicious character who was on the premises for an extended period, and he would be our best bet to figuring out if this was a joint operation or not."

"Okay... is there a particular reason you’re beating about the bush?"

"These guys came prepared, Casey. They took up rooms opposite Jace and Kira, just so they could spy on them."

"But that’s a good thing, right? It means that they left a trail."

"No, they used fake IDs."

"What the fuck?!" I cursed as I lowered myself onto the couch. "You mean to tell me that you don’t verify the identity of your customers? How then can you deliver on this bogus privacy that you keep promoting?"

"No, a lot of effort was put into planning this. I’m beginning to think that it’s not just a simple blog or reporter who wants to get scoops. It’s planned and coordinated."

I thought then about Maven and slowly nodded, there was a sophistication about them. And now, I was sure that they had seen something that night when they were stationed outside Kira’s room. Was that Maven himself who was there? Was this the reason he was only reaching out to Kira?

"So, do you have any good news for me?"

"Well," Joan cleared her throat. "We have copies of their fake IDs, we also have footage of the stalker leaving the premises. And we got his face."

"Finally, that’s good news! So, who is he?" I muttered, finally ready to know who this mystery guy was once and for all!

"Well, that’s why I’m calling you. We’ve gotten you a clear face of the stalker and it’s up to you to figure out who he is."

"Excuse me? I don’t understand."

"We can’t go to the police with this, because that is where a leak would start from and it would all snowball into one big ass media frenzy. I’m sure neither Kira nor her fiancé would like that. So, I’m leaving it to you to handle it the way you deem fit."

"I can’t believe this, you’re washing your hands off this case? After failing to deliver on what you promised? I won’t forget this, Joan. And neither will Jace. Mark my words."

"Casey... you have to understand my position here. I still have to consider our other customers who..."

"I don’t care about all that right now. Send me the picture of the stalker, I also need all the footage that you’ve gathered on him. Then, you send me footage of the biker that followed Jace’s convoy out of the hotel as well. Since you’re refusing to do your fucking job, I’ll do it for you!"

"We’ll send you the footage now, but you must make it known that we co-operated with you on this."

"Just send the damn files!" I muttered as I cut the call.

I was pissed with her on a grand scale. The only reason I had chosen the hotel was because it was the most exclusive and also the talk of the town. If you wanted paparazzi and the whole nine yards, Royale was best for it. But they seemed to be seriously lacking when it came to the privacy of their customers. This was a big disappointment. There was no way the upcoming rehearsal dinner would be held there. Matter of fact, there was no way any future event of mine would be held there.

The files came about an hour later, by then I had freshened up and had on cleaner clothes. I knew that it was late and I needed to sleep for tomorrow, but I couldn’t just yet. I needed to see what I could discover about Maven. When the files hit my phone, I was having a late dinner in my kitchen. I immediately forwarded the files to my laptop and once there, I began to scrutinize them.

I checked the picture of the stalker and slowly shook my head. I had never seen that face before. Was he Maven? Or did he work with Maven? He had to be Maven, after all, he was the one stationed outside her hotel room, so he must be the one blackmailing her. It made sense.

I began to watch the footage, one after the other. All the footage that had the stalker in it. However, the hotel cameras had been designed in a way that despite their presence, there were lots of blind spots. This was to help rich clients who were meeting up with people they were not supposed to. Like Jace sneaking into my room.

"Holy shit!" I gasped as I suddenly realized.

The hotel cameras might not have caught it, but it was very possible that the stalker had seen it. Kira must have had a visitor over after I left her hotel room.

"Oh fuck!" I muttered as I remembered my time in her room after the dinner, and how her phone kept ringing over and over. I assumed she didn’t answer the call because she was in a shitty mood. What if I was wrong? What if she didn’t want to answer the call because I was in the room with her? That could have been why she was being so shady about the caller.

"Kira is seeing someone..." I muttered with shock, "And Maven knows who it is, and that’s who he’s blackmailing her with!"

I needed to find out who the stalker was, that way, we’d be able to know who Kira’s lover was.

"Shit!" I muttered as I picked up my phone and dialed up Jace’s number.

He answered on the first ring, "Wow, speak of the devil. I was just thinking of you!"

"I’m in!" I said at once, without any preamble.

"What?"

"You heard me, I’m in with your plan. We’ll tell Ethan everything and he’ll help us track down the stalker. We need to find this guy as soon as possible!"

"Well, it’s a good thing, it means you and I are on the same page right? So, you won’t be mad at me right now."

"Uhm... mad at you? Why would I be?"

"Cause I’m at your front door."

Just then, I heard a knock on my door.

"What the fuck?" I jumped from my seat and raced through my house, I unlocked the door and threw it open. Sure enough, he was there, dressed in a coat and a hoodie, he also had on a face cap that hid most of his features. I couldn’t believe he would be here, even when we had stalkers following us all over Silicon Valley!

"What the fuck are you doing here, Jace?"
