Chapter 112: Fast And Furious...

(Kira’s POV)

_____________

"What the..." Maddie’s voice trailed off, laced with disbelief as she stepped further out onto the porch, her hand shading her eyes against the afternoon sun. Her gaze was fixed on the two cars that had vanished around the curve at the end of the street—one tailing the other with reckless abandon.

"This is a residential area," she said sharply, the confusion in her voice rising into anger. "Why the hell would they be driving like maniacs?"

I didn’t answer her. I couldn’t. My brain was spinning too fast, my breath shallow. My heart had dropped to the pit of my stomach, coiled into a knot of dread. This wasn’t supposed to happen here. Not in fucking Lakeview. Not in front of her.

"I... uh..." I stammered, stepping backward, my shoes crunching lightly against the gravel of her garden path. "I have to go. Now."

Maddie turned to face me, her brows furrowing. "Is everything alright—?"

But I didn’t wait for the rest. I turned and bolted, heart thundering like the cars that had just screamed past. I could feel her eyes on my back, full of questions I didn’t have the breath—or time—to answer.

My feet pounded down the driveway, faster than I’d ever moved in my life. My fingers fumbled with the key fob as I reached my car, and for a second, the world stood still in that agonizing delay between pressing the button and hearing the blessed click of the lock disengaging.

Then I was inside, slamming the door shut, jamming the key into the ignition with trembling hands.

The engine roared to life like it had been startled awake. I didn’t give it a moment to settle before I shifted into drive and slammed my foot onto the gas. The tires screeched against the pavement as I tore away from the curb.

Adrenaline surged like a drug, heightening every sense. The street blurred at the edges, trees becoming vertical smudges of green. My knuckles were bone-white on the steering wheel as I navigated the narrow turns, and each corner was a gamble between speed and control.

The image of Kraven’s car chasing Maven’s still burned behind my eyes. It didn’t feel real. It felt like something out of a movie—only this time, the danger wasn’t on a screen. It was unfolding in real time, dragging me into a scenario I hadn’t signed up for. When I had left the house to go on Maven’s stupid errand, it didn’t include a fucking car chase!

Yet, here I was, revving my engine as I sped off to catch up with Kraven and Maven.

I reached the intersection leading out of Lakeview Estate and slammed on the brakes just long enough to scan the road.

There. I saw them almost immediately.

Kraven’s black sedan was gaining on the silver vehicle—Maven’s. The two cars wove through the street like beasts locked in some primal chase, metal and rubber and velocity feeding off each other in a vicious loop.

Kraven was trying to overtake Maven, his car veering hard into the opposite lane, nearly clipping the curb in the process. It was clear—he wasn’t just following anymore. He was hunting.

I swallowed hard and did the only thing that made sense in that moment.

I floored it.

The engine screamed in protest as I shot forward, tires spinning until they found their grip. This was the first time I was pushing my car to the extreme, and I just had to hope that it was up to the task. My seatbelt locked against my chest, snapping me back as I surged down the street after them.

This had gone on for long enough. Lakeview was a residential area, and such rough driving could hurt someone. I had to put an end to it now!

The engine howled beneath me like a beast begging for blood as I slammed my foot down on the pedal one last time. The car jerked once as the tires shrieked against the pavement when I yanked the wheel, swerving sharply to the shoulder of the road. Dust and gravel exploded beneath the wheels, shooting into the air to form a curtain of debris rising behind me. My heart thudded like a war drum in my chest. Every nerve in my body burned as I gave the Maven’s car what must have looked like an open path forward. A path to victory and freedom.

But it wasn’t mercy.

It was bait.

As soon as Maven’s car veered toward the space I’d cleared, attempting to slip past, I slammed my wheel to the left, jerking my car directly into its path. My breath caught. I was ready—no, willing—to make contact. Metal against metal. Paint against paint. Rubber howling across asphalt. If it meant stopping him, I was prepared to trade bruises for answers. A crash would end this sick chase and also trap him in place to give me my much-deserved answers.

Unfortunately, Kraven had the same idea.

At the very same moment I executed my maneuver, his car lunged forward from the opposite angle—his timing impeccable, or maybe just unfortunate. My rear end collided violently with the front of his car, metal shrieking, steel crumpled like paper in the clenched fist of an angry child. The impact jolted my entire body, slamming me forward into my seatbelt as both vehicles veered off-road like beasts flung from the ring.

There was no grace in our landing.

The undercarriage of my car scraped over the edge of a shallow ditch before bouncing onto the overgrown field beyond, grass whipping up in streaks beneath my skidding tires. The vehicle groaned as it slowed to a grudging, crooked stop, smoke curling from the hood.

Kraven’s car, meanwhile, wasn’t so lucky. It flew headfirst into the ditch, the nose plowing through weeds and soil. It’s entire body vibrated strongly before coming to a firm halt.

And through it all... Maven escaped.

His silver car didn’t even pause. Just kept going, slipping away like a ghost into the hazy heat shimmering above the road. I could only watch, breath ragged, heart howling in my chest as he vanished.

"What the fuck, Kraven!" I shouted, throwing the door open so hard it rebounded off the hinge. Fury surged through me like a second heartbeat. "What the actual fuck?!"

My boots hit the soft ground with a crunch. I staggered forward, adrenaline turning my legs stiff and fast. My gaze locked onto Kraven’s wreck of a car just as the door creaked open and he emerged, coughing, wincing, one hand on the frame to steady himself.

"I almost had him!" I roared, stomping across the grass toward him. My fists were balled. My voice shook with rage. "We almost had him, Kraven! Why the fuck did you move in then?"

He didn’t snap back. Didn’t raise his voice or posture. Just stood there, winded, scraped, covered in specks of mud and dust.

"I’m sorry," he said. His voice was rough, laced with guilt. "He looked like he was going to hit you. I thought he was going to ram your car. I panicked—I was trying to stop him."

My hands flew up in frustration, dragging through my hair.

"Fuck!" I cursed again, pacing in a tight, feral circle. "You weren’t supposed to panic. You weren’t supposed to do anything! You were supposed to stay invisible—incognito, remember? That was the whole goddamn point!"

Kraven winced. "I know. I know. But I couldn’t just sit there if he was about to hurt you."

I stopped pacing.

My breath came in short bursts. My hands trembled. The words caught somewhere in my throat like a splinter.

I forced my breathing to slow, jaw tight, nostrils flaring.

"Why did you even end up chasing him? How the fuck did we get to this point?" I asked, my voice low, carefully measured now, because something in his tone had shifted—something deeper. Something worse.

Kraven’s eyes met mine. Behind them, something cold and certain lived.

"That guy? Maven, or whatever his real name is..." He paused. "He wasn’t just running. He was watching you. At Maddie’s house."

I froze. "Watching me? I know that. I saw him with the camera back at the supermarket, remember?"

Kraven nodded once. "He was taking pictures. Of you. Of the old woman. I saw him the moment I pulled into Lakeview. Parked just down the street. Camera up. Long lens. He took at least a dozen before he realized I was looking back. The moment he noticed he was being watched, he made a run for it. I knew that my cover was blown, so I chased him down."

My stomach dropped. Ice raced up my spine.

I stepped back a pace, blinking hard, the dots beginning to connect.

The grocery run. Maddie. The quiet photos on the mantel. The warmth in her smile as she welcomed me into her home. The ease with which Maven had chosen that place. Her house. Lena’s mother’s house.

"Oh my God..." I whispered, the horror tightening my throat. "Holy shit."

He wasn’t just following me. He knew. He knew who Maddie was. He knew where she lived. That had been clear from the beginning. But he wanted me to show up here, eventually. And he wanted it documented. Proof. Not of me.

Of us.

Suddenly, it all clicked. The setup was precise, surgical. Intentional.

Maven hadn’t just wanted to watch me buy groceries for my girlfriend’s mother. It wasn’t a dumb errand after all, he wanted more leverage!

"It has always been about me," I breathed, my voice barely audible. "He simply wanted more damning evidence that he could use against me!."

Kraven said nothing. He didn’t have to.

And now, thanks to our little crash and his failed pursuit, Maven had not only gotten away...

He had everything he needed. And he knew that I had someone working with me.

A photo of me and Maddie, side by side. Probably laughing. Smiling. Maybe hugging goodbye. Something sweet. Something twistable.

He’d been laying a trap the whole time—and I walked straight into it.

I was in trouble.
