Chapter 35: The Shadows Lingering
Arc 2, Chapter 35—The Shadows Lingering.
.
.
In life, there’s always a world far beyond the reach of others.
A world so dark and lonely, it could erase an entire nation from existence.
But who prey tell, are the Masters slithering in the shadows?
That was a question worthless beings of weaker attributes, had no access to.
A simple but luxurious round table sat within a massive grand hall.
...
Inside a peculiar room, the high ceilings created a sense of openness, amplifying the beauty of the view.
Sunlight streamed through the multicolored glazed windows, creating rainbow fragments around the space.
The falling light shone brightly on the Side faces of those seated, casting a dark blanket on the opposite side of their faces.
How marvelous.
It was marvelous, that such a massive space had no pieces of furniture in it except for the elegant table and 8 seats.
The people seated within the room were effortlessly relaxed, despite the unsettling atmosphere their presence brought.
So frightening...
It was as though the room itself was holding its breath, frozen in time from their presence.
They didn’t mean to ooze power and strength, but did anyway.
When gathered together, this was the sort of feeling their Presence often fermented.
"Oh, so we’ve got more promising in-takes than anticipated? Well now, isn’t it more fun this way?"
The one who spoke was a man who could be easily confused with a woman.
However, there was no mistaking that after a single look, anyone would know he was a man.
Nevertheless, he was such a good-looking man that one would think it impossible for any man to look this good.
He wore the same uniform as Roud Kento, but had feathery sleeves exposed from under his uniform.
His blond hair was overly long, long enough to touch his knee when standing.
His eyebrows were perfect, and his white gloves made him look like an aristocrat.
Clovis Cardemond—Department Head of Security.
In other words, he was Commander and Chief of Department 3.
In a nutshell, Clovis oversaw all security involving the organization’s waterways, entryways, exit ways, doors, you name it.
Ghaw-kakakakakak~
Another man crackled in agreement with Clovis, laughing back and forth with his arms crossed.
The man in question also had waist-long hair, except his was fiery red hair and spiky.
It seemed that his hair had a personality of its own, and was always kept in a ponytail.
His red eyebrows curved upwards animatedly, and his black bandana always covered his forehead.
Finally, to top off his look, he often carried a long sword with a bizarre hooked curve towards its end.
Gaara Dunleavy, also known to many as the Red-Haired Destroyer.
He was the Department Head for Battle and Retrieval—Commander and chief of Department 4.
.
.
GwaKakakakakak~
Gaara’s burly laugh bounced off the walls of the room from every corner.
"This year is really good. Clovis, you said it right!" Gaara heavily slapped Clovis’ back in glee. "It’s another—"
Gaara paused, interrupted by an eerie laughter he was too familiar with
Bam!
He slammed his thick hands on the table, leaving a palm imprint behind.
"Did I say something funny, Roud? Care to share?"
"Oh?" Roud acted surprised momentarily. And after his pretentious shock, he slowly leaned forth with both elbows on the table and his hands under his chin.
"Don’t mind me..." he continued. "I just find the whole thing laughable."
"Gaara, I admit that there are some interesting ones who tickle my fancy.... Indeed, you can color me Guilty as charged. However–"
Roud’s entire demeanor suddenly changed. "Do you not understand what we are in Vampire equivalents?"
DUKES!
"We are Dukes in their world, and our in-takes who pass, are just but tiny newborn servants.
Tapping his fingers on the table, Roud smiled sadistically.
"Don’t you get it? These new in-takes are like fish parading themselves in front of a whale."
"Every step they take will be guided for them, like the rubbish that they are..."
"So tell me, Gaara... Why should care or waste my sense of humor, on worthless BLOODRENS who have not proven anything yet?"
"Talk to me about humor, when they actually become something worth my interest."
Roud spoke, as if speaking about a stalk of grass on the side of the road.
Well now~
Everyone else wore ethereal and plain smiles, with barely noticeable flickers of amusement in them.
Some even chuckled, while others chewed on their candy with relish.
"YOU!—" Gaara’s entire body turned fiery, already drawing out his weapon without mercy.
"Dammit, Roud, are you saying their lives aren’t worth your attention because they’re weak now?"
Roud shrugged. "My dear Gaara, I know you to be slow, not not stupid... Well done! You’ve solved my puzzle." He then reached into his pocket. "Cookie?"
"Why you—"
"Enough."
A supersonic wave vibrated across the scene, despite the owner of the voice not raising an octave.
~Bam!
Zen was the old man’s name. He had an overly long gray beard, a completely bald head, and overly long eyebrows that reached his ankles.
He was the Order Chief of the Scarlet Cross, in charge of everything and everyone in here. And as Order Chief, he had 7 Department heads underneath him.
His uniform was far different from theirs, with a more Priestly look to it.
The upper half of his uniform from waist upwards was RED, and the lower half was completely BLACK.
The crooked stick in his hand, his staff.... let out another wave that counterattacked the earlier sonic wave his voice.
Make no mistake!
The first wave was enough to destroy this space and harm everyone here, if he didn’t counter it.
Seeing as the Gaara and Roud regained silence, Old Man Zen leaned back into his seat.
Apart from the first 3 Department heads who did all the talking so far, there was—Sayoko Fritannia, Captain of Department 6, Logistics.
She was the pigtailed 7-year old girl who met with Levon’s group.
And sure enough, even now, her Mega sword still rested on her back, shooting sky high even when seated.
Sayoko seemed deaf, now fully focused on the candies 2 other women stuffed in her cheeks.
When food was involved, it seems she was blind and oblivious to any quarrels around her.
That’s right, she was the Logistics Department Head!
Her department was in charge of day-to-day functioning in the organization, including cleaning, meals, and accounting.
Don’t underestimate her because of her age. Her fighting prowess and abilities far exceeded many in their sacred world.
As for the remaining people, they were department heads for the Medical Department, the Diplomatic Department, and the Department of Weapon and Shard Research and care.
All 7 Department Heads... were under the Old Man!
"Enough fighting. Sayoko, let’s hear your report."
