Chapter 33: Examination 4!

Seeing their distrust, Roud slowly raised his palms, as though he was some messiah.

[Come now, little Piglets. Am I that bad in your eyes?]

[Well, I can’t say you’re wrong. However, for Examination 4, I’d prefer to see you battle with some fuel in your bellies.]

Or else wouldn’t it be a bore to watch?

Roud leaned forward, with a grin designed to lure his prey into making fatal errors.

[Little Piglets... Your opponent(s), though weak before me,... will be undoubtedly far superior to you in strength.]

[In fact, I dare say that none of you can truly deal with any of them on your own. In conclusion, you’re all too WEAK and insignificant to deal with them one-on-one.]

Weak?

Him?

Levon flattened his mouth into a straight line, as did others.

Well, if this was some kind of joke, they saw no humor in it whatsoever.

’He’s exaggerating, isn’t he?’

It’s true that the Roud was powerful.

But how come their opponents he classified as weak and hardly worth his attention, would be the same people he said were also far superior than them?

If he called those people trash, then what does that make them?

According to Roud, for every 3~5 people in a cubicle, they’ll only be going against ONE opponent of varying strengths.

’So this means our cubicle of 3, will fight just 1 opponent.’ Levon analyzed.

If there are 4~5 in a cubicle, they’ll still fight just one person. However, that person will be stronger than the one in cubicles with 3 persons.

6~9 people will fight 2, and so on.

Everyone nodded, more or less understanding the battle situation in Examination 4.

However, who were these mysterious Opponents they’ll be going up against?

The feast was on.

In silence, many chewed slowly, without a care in the world.

20 minutes was a long time to enjoy the bento boxes given.

Some drank, others chewed, while some like Floriana, did both—sleeping and chewing at the same time.

A majority showed no hints of fear or worry.

But if it were one of those weaklings who rushed out earlier, they would be coming up with some plans on how to fight their opponent.

However, everyone was chill, munching on food without a second thought.

Battle—It was such a simple word, yet it made their blood boil.

What does it mean for the planned opponents to be far stronger than them, but far weaker than Roud?

Even though they didn’t believe they would completely strike out in a one-on-one with their opponents, they still felt adrenaline flood their bodies after knowing they would be battling a strong man!

’10 more seconds to go...’

staring at the digital numbers in red on the walls, everyone subconsciously straightened their backs.

The countdown heightened their excitement.

5...

The empty tray slowly retracted back into the cubicle.

4...

Several people cracked their necks and bones in anticipation.

3... 2... 1...

It was time.

Dhin~

The cubicle’s main door opened, which was far taller than the crawling hole those who left used.

’They never cease to amaze me.’

Levon chuckled while passing through. There was a meaning to this.

Owners walk, while dogs crawl... The weak stand, and the strong grovel.

The more Levon knew about this place, the more intrigued he became.

"A forest again?" Shugo mumbled, chewing on a new set of snacks.

Before them, stood a dark, dim, gloomy crimson forest that embodied both danger and beauty.

Levon tilted his head sideways.

If he had to be honest, everything had the exact hues and shadings of Blood.... Deep red, ominous blood.

In addition to the already crimson scenery, reddish mist circulating in a peculiar manner around the trees.

"How far do you think it goes?" Shugo looked over yonder, but found trees in all directions.

Levon shrugged effortlessly. "Who knows."

The place was unexpectedly huge.

Shadows stretched and contracted with every movement from their surroundings, swirling playfully across the forest’s floors.

Then, the senses of the trio heightened.

"Is that water?"

The faint sounds of water dripping in the distance, caused their feet to move in that direction.

The sounds danced through the forest, like an enchantment, crawling all visitors close.

"Isn’t it odd?" Artilla frowned, her eyes skimming through the dense forest.

No creatures, no bugs... just even a single living thing in sight.

"Although deadly, the forest above had countless creatures living in unison. But this one–"

Artilla paused, and everyone’s aura grew heavier.

It’s too ODD!

Levon hunched his back in defense, sensing the strangeness around him.

"Can you feel it?"

"Yeah." Shugo answered. "It’s almost as though the entire forest was created just for one purpose... or one animal.

"Animal? I don’t think so." Levon shook his head sideways. "He said we will be fighting an opponent...."

He, Levon, wouldn’t put so much emphasis on a mere beast, no matter how strong that beast is.

It could be an ancient Mammoth, and he still wouldn’t emphasize it the way Roud did.

So there’s only one logical explanation.

"What we’re about to face is a man... or a woman... perhaps a deadly killer captured and trapped by this organization."

But who?

"Who—"

AughF~

Levon almost missed his footing.

"Good God! What the hell is that stench?"

It was so awful that even Shugo had to roll up his snack bag and keep away, lest it got polluted... and this was coming from someone who ate poisonous treats every few minutes.

Damn!

The aroma clung to the forest floors and trees, saturating the space with unsettling urgency.

But wait! Was that–

"Blood." Artilla muttered.

The scent of fresh blood lingered like ghosts in this foggy red land.

"Since there were no other creatures in sight, where did the blood come from?"

Artilla frowned.

Could it be that they were sent here to fight a heavily injured enemy?

Well, that was just flippin GREAT.

Their moods dampened in a heartbeat.

What’s the point fighting someone who is already so down?

"What a bummer."

Everyone felt down and in the dumps, not knowing that in the next few seconds to come, they would be met with a shocking truth behind the organization’s existence.

"I guess we have to follow the stench."

"Yeah..."

The group moved swiftly, soon reaching an incredibly red, wide and still lake.

Then, they finally found the source of the foul bloody stench in the air.

.

.

Shwah-Shwah-Shwah-Shwah~

The trio heard sounds of light trinkling from the lake.

There in the distance, stood a hunched silhouette chewing and nibbling on the body of a dead 2-headed deer.

And at this point, Levon felt a primitive warning go off in his mind.

A...vamp...

Levon’s breathing grow raspier, not even believing what all signs pointed to.

Their opponent was a... vampire?
