I Will Be the Greatest Knight
Chapter 91: The Horrors Continue

Chapter 91: The Horrors Continue

Irene escaped Agnes who was forced to attend to other duties considering the sudden rush of injured knights.

After the girl convinced the teenager that she would be alright on her own, she took advantage of having no one beside her and sprinted towards the upper levels of the Duke’s Tower where her father was taken to a guest room in the Duke’s Wing. He was given a comfortable room considering his value to the knighthood.

Considering the amount of people that were having to try and work on him to get him stable, it was no wonder he needed such a large room. The situation was far more severe than when Irene was injured last year despite how unusual her injury was. She hadn’t bled the way she saw that her father was, nor did it require multiple mages.

It seemed it was finally time to learn what it was like when hell on earth settled over the knighthood—the true reason for her parents’ hesitance in her pursuing this life in the first place. Monsters were called that for a reason.

As the girl made it to the second floor, it was easy to tell where everyone was. There were shouts as mages bickered and a few knights argued over various things that had very little to do with the situation at hand.

Everyone tried to point fingers but there was no one to blame. Arthur made the decision. He knew the risks of everything he did.

The knights who were doing nothing to help were shoved into the hallway by Stanley who was having none of their interruption.

However, Irene ran past the knights, not caring what they did or if they even looked at her. She was insistent on being at her father’s side.

The door very nearly slammed in her face but the girl shoved her boot into the opening before it could come completely shut.

"Let me in this damned room!" she shouted.

She then snuck her sheathed sword into the opening and pushed the door with her shoulders and side of her body so whoever was on the other side was forced to allow her in. Considering all that was in the room were mages and a couple of maids, they didn’t stand up to her in terms of strength. After all, the mages had been told that they weren’t allowed to use magic on the people who lived there or they would be cast out immediately.

Once the girl was in the room, they thought that was the last of the disturbances but Leif pushed his way in before the door could be shut once and for all.

He was also placed in the corner with Irene so that the mages could do their work.

She shared a significant look with the older apprentice, silently thanking him for being there with her even if it wasn’t easy to see. He gave her a tight-lipped smile meant to comfort her, but the fear in his eyes was another story.

The apprentices were given looks of annoyance but most of the focus was on the badly injured man who was having his armor cut off of his body rather than removed in a normal way. That in itself caused Irene to place a hand over her mouth as the sick feeling returned to her.

She promised herself that she would repair all of the armor by the time her father was back on his feet. He would need it eventually.

The armor was off of the knight’s massive body, but when they got to the disfigured arm, they were much more careful as they removed a greave and the plates that were smashed together. Maids were ready at the side with towels for what would be revealed once the metal was taken away.

What was left of Arthur’s right arm couldn’t be considered an arm at all.

A gasp fell from Irene’s lips no matter how hard she tried to control herself. Her legs felt weak and she wanted to run forward but there wasn’t even an inch of room for her to squeeze into. Even with emotions she had never experienced before in her life, she knew when she wasn’t needed.

Soon she felt a hand on her shoulder and something soft touch her face. To her surprise, Leif had provided her with a handkerchief. He was being dutiful which was the only way he knew how to comfort someone else. She had already taken off her gloves and she wiped the tears she was hardly aware of with the handkerchief and then kept it close to her face.

Leif was satisfied when she kept the small token of his care. He had a soft spot for the other apprentice. It had nothing to do with the pedestal he had placed Sir Arthur on either.

Even though he was taking the sight in front of him very badly, it couldn’t compare to what Sir Arthur’s firstborn child must have been feeling. Since Leif understood it well, he decided his best course of action was to be there for Iro.

A knight’s armor was always meant to be respected, but the mages couldn’t care about it at that moment as they tossed the metal arm plates onto the floor and got to work cutting what was left of the man’s sleeve off of what was crushed bone and carnage from just below his elbow and onward.

Towels were laid underneath Arthur’s arm and various mages found the tools that Stanley quietly asked for.

To Irene’s horror, she saw knives and a small saw. The handkerchief became a tool to keep her mouth shut so she wouldn’t vomit rather than a thing to wipe her tears.

Just as when Irene was hurt, Stanley conjured up a magical circle that he soon pushed into the unconscious man’s forehead, ensuring that he wouldn’t wake up for what the mage was about to do.

Despite how severe it might look, Stanley was the most trusted mage when it came to medical treatment. He had proven himself time and time again and not only when it came to Irene. He was also researching the black poison the monsters kept appearing with and the Duke’s illness.

His hard work was affording him more books and research materials. As long as he could continue benefiting the knighthood, he and his mages were welcome.

His ultimate test was placed before him as he put the highest ranked active knight into a deep slumber so that he could do what he could to save what was left of the man’s arm.
