I Will Be the Greatest Knight
Chapter 218: New Goblins

Chapter 218: New Goblins

There was a difference between monsters and beasts.

Monsters were sent from hell and resemble humans, while beasts were naturally occurring and sometimes influenced by magic.

Where they were the same was their desire to slash down humans and cause chaos. There wasn’t a reason for their actions other than the survival of their own.

This brought up the fact that goblins were the lowest classification of monster that the world had ever seen.

Mindless creatures that only knew how to fight, steal, and procreate. There was much debate on whether or not they even had a brain behind their eyes or a heart in their chest. Those with enough curiosity explored the mindless theory, performing dissections that led them to a mess of organs unrecognizable by humans.

Their dark insides, along with nearly black blood, made anything inside of them indecipherable. The conclusion was mostly that they had small minds and hearts that wouldn’t lend much to them in terms of anything beyond living.

Irene had discovered this in the many books she had read through the winters at the Duke’s Tower. There was an endless library with new books always added or exchanged. Despite what many might think, Duke Arlin found the search for knowledge an important pursuit. Most sword-wielders only knew enough to read because all they were required to do in chivalry was uphold the teachings of religious texts, but he wanted his knighthood to be different.

As Irene sat atop her horse, pointing her bow in the direction of more goblins that came from the mist of the northern mountains, everything she thought she knew about goblins seemed to go up in flames.

In the back of the sea of monsters, there were goblins larger than the ones she was used to seeing. However, their size wasn’t what bothered her the most.

The monsters walked slowly out of the tree line, holding ropes with dire wolves at the end of them.

Irene couldn’t see the finer details of their faces, but she knew by the way the goblins were being pulled that the dire wolves were barely in the monsters’ control.

How did they know how to tame a dire wolf enough that it could be put on a leash? Her mouth merely hung open for a moment, and the target of her arrows suddenly changed.

Irene squeezed her knees at Sorrel’s sides and directed the horse around all of the chaos and clashing weapons.

She couldn’t take a moment to appreciate how she had gotten so adept at maneuvering her horse in such a way. Compared to a few years before, she had practically perfect control.

As she got a bit closer, she could see better. At least it was enough to see the snarling faces of the dire wolves as they pulled the goblins forward.

Just as she observed from afar, the goblins didn’t have the best control over the beasts they dared try to command.

Seeing that there was one who had a particularly loose grip on the dire wolf, Irene jumped off of Sorrel, and she smacked his hind side so that he would run away from her.

"Dire wolves!" she shouted towards the main battle. "Be careful!"

She didn’t have a moment to see whether or not they listened to her because she soon heard a goblin scream, and she turned just in time to see the dire wolf break away from the largest goblin. Since it was only the beginning of winter, the wolves were fat and energetic. It was a far cry from how they would be in a few months after facing a northern winter.

Most would have panicked at the reality of a wolf so large running towards them, but she knew she needed to remain calm or it would turn out badly for everyone. With a deep breath, she readied herself.

The girl held one of the arrows towards her face, and she bit off the cloth that had been dipped in tallow. By then, the cloth had unlit and she was forced to shoot it as a normal arrow. At least this way, it would go farther. She wanted to keep the distance between herself and the dire wolves if at all possible.

She then raised the arrow and lined up a shot. The dire wolf was approaching quickly, and she shot off an arrow at its face.

The distance closing between the arrow and the wolf made it possible for the arrow to get embedded into the beast’s forehead.

Irene was proud of herself, but it wasn’t enough to keep the wolf from sprinting forward. She had to throw the bow to the ground and hope that it didn’t get crushed by anything while she didn’t have it in her possession. After all, it was a gift from Samson and had gotten her through so many things already.

All she could do from that point was brandish her sword and hope that her power was enough to take down the wolf that was coming after her.

It would keep it from getting to those who were less suspecting. So many apprentices and squires younger than her were on the battlefield that day.

Ten feet left.

She was certain the beast would jump at her, and her heart was racing in her ears.

Her arms braced for the impact, and she ducked her head so that no chance of her neck being exposed would be there, but her green eyes remained on the beast.

However, her hyper-focused gaze also took in the two arrows that were flying toward the wolf, and she was taken aback to see the wolf be taken out by one through its stomach and one through its chest. The places it was shot weren’t extremely precise. Likely someone who didn’t practice bow and arrow often but was adept enough.

It was still squirming on the ground, so she went forward to slice it deeply in its neck. Even if it was a beast out to get her, she still didn’t want to see it suffer. It would be against everything that she was taught.

"Did you think you were going to be able to face them on your own!?" a voice exclaimed from behind her.

Irene turned to see who was there, and she saw long blonde hair fall out of a helmet as he pulled it off his head.

"Ah, it is who I expected," Alix realized. "That apprentice from Chemois. The red hair was what struck me."
