Chapter 192: Roommates

That time, Leif had to push Irene off his shoulder, but he made sure she didn’t fall all the way over before he stood up.

When the apprentice opened the door, he was surprised to see William standing there with flint in his hand.

"Sir Gunnar says we all should settle down for the night," he explained. "Block doors with furniture and light a fire to stay warm. He said we will come up with a better plan in the morning since the goblins are becoming more active now that the sun is setting."

"Yes, of course," Leif responded and took the flint from the squire. "Thanks."

The squire merely nodded, and Leif turned to see Irene slowly waking up. She frowned at him and rubbed one of her eyes.

"Did I fall asleep on you?" she asked in disbelief.

Leif’s ears felt hot, and he glared at the girl. Rather than answering, he changed the subject.

"Did you hear what William said?" he asked. "We need to settle down for the night."

Irene nodded and stretched her arms out wide as her body adjusted to the horrible reality of being awake in the midst of what felt like hell. She yawned before she fell face-first into the mattress.

"We can block the door with the bed, and I’ll get my mattress so we both have a place to sleep on the floor," she muttered into the blankets.

Leif couldn’t help the faint smirk that pulled at the side of his mouth, even though he tried his hardest to resist the girl’s tired behavior. He didn’t want to find her funny at that moment.

Rather than staring for longer, he stormed out of the room with a huff and went to her old barrack, where he retrieved her mattress and dragged it into the hallway.

Determined not to be seen as lazy, the girl quickly rushed after him and helped him even though he was already halfway into the hallway.

When they got everything back into the room, they shut the door and tipped the mattress off the bed frame. When the frame was on its side, they wedged it underneath the doorknob and into the wall so that it would be impossible to open the door and catch them off guard.

There, Irene tended to the mattresses on the floor. While being moved, they had gotten a bit misshapen. Since they were wool sacks filled with straw and feathers, it was no wonder they got out of shape so easily.

She flattened the beds out and placed the linen sheets back over them before covering them with the blankets that were on them before.

Meanwhile, Leif got together the fire in the small corner stove each barrack had. Luckily, the wood was decently stocked, and he brought more from his room earlier, so they wouldn’t have to worry about that for quite a while. When he was finished lighting the fire, he also decided to make them a bit of broth using bones and jerky he had in his pack. It would be better than eating nothing. They had been doing a lot of that recently, which was why they were so tired, most likely.

Eventually, the two sat next to one another on top of their mattresses, and they had no choice but to share one bowl—that was all they had in the chaos. They hadn’t thought about it until that moment. Luckily, there were two spoons, so they didn’t have to go that far to eat dinner.

As they ate together, Irene found herself feeling a bit awkward.

If Leif knew she was a girl, would he behave so comfortably around her?

She was entirely unaware that Leif was unbelievably self-conscious and agonizing over each thing he did. He was always awkward, but waking up to her sleeping against his shoulder made him feel more awkward.

They ate dinner in relative silence before Leif placed the bowl back onto the table with their other supplies and decided it was time to settle in for the night.

All either one of them could do was take their boots off to get comfortable. It was a small thing in an otherwise uncomfortable situation, but they still took the opportunity.

"Leif..." Irene trailed off. "What do you think of this whole situation? Are we going to be alright?"

When he heard his name from her mouth, he turned around quickly, suddenly worried about what it could be. However, when he heard the true reason for her questioning, he was strangely relieved and disappointed all at once.

"We’ll be alright," he assured her. "We have the best knights in our order calling shots for us. It was good that he stopped you earlier, y’know?"

Irene’s eyes were downcast at her hands, which were resting on one of the feet she had tucked underneath her.

"I just want to kill every single one of them," she admitted, her voice becoming hopeless. "I don’t want them to get away with killing anymore people. I couldn’t look closely at the bodies earlier because I was worried about seeing a face I recognized. What about Agnes? Rosalind? Sir Phillip? This is so hard."

"We fight like hell for them is all we can do," Leif insisted. "We’ll have each other’s backs no matter what happens, right? We can rely on each other even while we figure out what’s happening with these goblins. There has to be a way we can stop this."

"There has to be," she agreed.

"Now let’s get some sleep," Leif insisted. "No use in thinking about something that’s not in our control right now."

The apprentice settled into his bed and rolled onto his side so he was facing away from Irene.

The only light that filled the space was dim and coming from the stove, which kept them nice and warm.

"And don’t roll over here or you’re going to drool on me like you did earlier," Leif joked.

Irene’s eyes widened, and she could feel her head getting hot. She blamed it entirely on anger and not being able to take it out on the other apprentice.

With a scoff, all she muttered was a stiff "goodnight" before she rolled over and did the same.

They weren’t interrupted until well into the morning.
