Chapter 154: The Change of Plans (II)

Since the Princess wasn’t allowed outside as she wanted to, she was taking advantage of the guest room that stretched all the way across the very top floor of the inn.

Even through the windows covered in oiled paper and woolen curtains, the Princess heard something from down below in the village square.

Glancing over her shoulder, she paused for a while to make sure her brother truly was out of the room and talking to the Royal Knights as he was supposed to a little while before.

With a sigh, she ran to the window.

She couldn’t help her curiosity as she moved away the curtains and peeled back some of the paper. After wiping away the oil that blurred her view of the outside, she was pleased to see there were knights and apprentices practicing down below.

The past few weeks had been the closest she had gotten to knights and she was very interested—to say the least.

It seemed that by the time she had gotten a good view of the scene below, they were already finishing up with a quick practice. She watched as the apprentice she danced with used his feet to nearly take out a knight and escape the blade before they could come back again.

Princess Marie gasped when the knight’s sword was inches from the apprentice’s throat. Her hand went over her lips.

Even though the swords were covered, it still stressed her out that people were willing to put themselves in such danger as that.

When they were attacked by supposed bandits, she had been asleep and didn’t even realize they were in danger at all. The fact that it all went on without her knowledge was quite amazing. Despite how badly her father talked about the northerners being barbaric, she was having more fun than she expected to.

Staying in the palace for the last twelve years of her life was unbelievably boring, to say the least.

When the apprentice’s green eyes drifted to the window, the Princess dropped the curtain and walked backwards. Would he find her strange for watching?

Irene’s smile was faint as she saw the Princess disappear into the darkness of the room she was in.

After everything, she didn’t find the Princess irritating. Rather, Irene felt sorry for the Princess. She could almost relate to her in some way because before she was the person staring out the window and wishing she could be with the knights.

Even if the Princess’s gaze was mere curiosity regarding a life she was incompatible with, Irene still related to not being able to leave. The curiosity came from being caged in. As far as she could tell, Irene experienced nine years of that before her death in what she thought was her previous life.

"Was that enough, or shall you test me more?"

Sir Eitan’s voice was enough to pull Irene from her thoughts and she turned to see the knight standing over Felix with his sword pointed at his face. The snow on the ground gave way to the struggle that must have happened before the knight got the upper hand over the apprentice.

"Forgive me, sir," Felix apologized. "I was overconfident."

Sir Eitan’s wolfish smile reminded Irene of Sir Gunnar’s when he had his sword pointed at her neck. It seemed that the knights were all cut from the same cloth. They were all taking their energy out on the apprentices—at least except for Sir Sven who finished his spar with Leif calmly.

True to a chivalrous knight, Eitan didn’t keep up the charade for long and he reached out a gloved hand to the apprentice. He then helped him onto his feet and helped brush off the snow that was covering his back.

"See what overconfidence brings you?" Eitan asked. "You are used to sparring with the apprentices who are younger than you and less experienced. The knights have years on you. Experience speaks louder than strength—something you undoubtedly have plenty of."

"I will keep that in mind, sir," Felix promised. "Thank you for teaching me a lesson."

They were next allowed to get to breakfast and then the rest of the day, outside of eating, was reserved to do as they pleased.

It turned out the local church had a library attached and, even though the content of the books was more philosophic and thought-provoking, there was no shortage of something to at least entertain the apprentices as they went on.

What Irene found interesting was a book against magic that was earmarked with a bunch of corrections that suited the more modern mind of the northerners who were accepting of magic. Their willingness to live alongside mages spoke volumes compared to the still pious south. Although it was clear that older churchgoers even around her were still against it merely because of the King.

It caused her to wonder about the Crown Prince and Princess’s thoughts about magic. She supposed she would never get close enough to ask.

As Irene looked around the library, she realized the sun was starting to set.

"We ought to go back to the inn," she realized. "Sir Gunnar said that we will eat supper in the evening."

"I didn’t realize how late it had gotten," Leif admitted as he got up from the chair next to the fire which he had been relying on for light."

However, the apprentices then went to seek out Felix who was taking a nap on one of the couches. The book he was reading before was long forgotten on his chest.

"Time to get up," Irene said to the apprentice as she lifted the book and closed it before dropping it onto his stomach.

With a groan, Felix sat up and caught the book before it could fall again.

"You pest," he uttered.

Since the two younger apprentices had already put their things away, they were first out of the tiny library with Felix running behind them.

As the kids approached the inn, they were thrilled to already smell food being cooked as the smoke went out the large chimney.

It wasn’t until they made it into the dining hall that they saw a familiar sight ahead of them.

"Dad?!" Irene gasped, recognizing the red hair that matched hers so well anywhere. "What on Earth are you doing here?"
