I Will Be the Greatest Knight -
Chapter 111: Unexpected Visitor
Chapter 111: Unexpected Visitor
Sir Gunnar had been handling the issue with the body found in the mountains, but he was nearly done when he heard a disturbance towards the front of the castle.
Sprinting his way there, he was shocked to hear Lady Rochelle shouting about one of the knights, however, it was no wonder considering the man had remained there instead of going to his family home where they were undoubtedly worrying about him.
It was no mystery to anyone in the knighthood how Rochelle felt about the knight’s career. In fact, she never held back when it came to her distaste.
However, to come all the way to the Duke’s Tower was a new development that she had never attempted before.
What struck Sir Gunnar the most was the horrified expression on Irene’s face. He rushed down to lead Leif and Felix toward the dining hall where they were supposed to be in the first place.
Despite how nervous she was that her mother had likely almost outed her in front of a hallway full of people, Irene approached Arne who she wrapped her arms around and pulled him further into the hallway. Whatever was going on seemed to be very much between their parents.
Meanwhile, Sir Arthur subtly tucked his right arm behind his back. He wasn’t wearing the prosthetic at that moment considering how early it was in the day and he didn’t quite want to break the news to his wife or son in such a way.
"Perhaps we ought to go to the Duke’s Study," Arthur suggested, knowing the ever elusive Duke was still holed up in the upper levels. The Duke’s not bothering to even make an appearance when he was injured which only further raised eyebrows regarding his illness.
Arthur gently guided his wife with his left hand, but she slapped it away from her and walked down the hallway in the direction he indicated by himself.
The knight glanced over his shoulder and gave Irene a faint nod before he and Rochelle could disappear down that wing of the small castle.
Irene looked down at her brother. How strange it was to see him after two years. Despite their three-year age difference, he was only a little bit shorter than her. How annoying that he would have gotten her father’s height.
"I’ve missed you, Arne," she uttered, finally giving him a light hug. "You have grown quite a bit."
"So then why don’t you write?" he wondered even though he returned the hug.
She stood up straight and her eyes widened in shock, realizing he wasn’t wrong. To say she was avoidant was an understatement.
"If you would like me to write you, I will," she promised. "I felt strange not writing to mother but writing to you."
The boy only nodded and his eyes scanned the halls he was unfamiliar with.
"Have you been traveling all night?" she asked.
He nodded.
"Would you like to get breakfast and then go outside?" she asked. "Perhaps we can sword fight together while mother and father talk."
A smile appeared.
"Then let’s go," he insisted. "I’m starving."
Even though he began the visit seeming timid after having to deal with their mother for an entire journey forth, he lit up at the thought of food and fighting. He was certainly as much Sünsto as Irene.
However, before they could move even further into the Duke’s Tower, Irene stopped her brother.
"When we’re here, you know you must call me Iro, right?" she whispered. "I am not a girl here."
"Yes," he responded. "Mother goes on about how she didn’t think you would keep it up for this long."
Irene rolled her eyes.
"Then if that’s all..." she uttered.
They made it the rest of the way into the dining hall. Despite how embarrassed she was about her mother’s outburst, she had to press on. Dealing with both hunger and exhaustion was a bit miserable. At least she could take care of one of the issues. Unfortunately, since her mother and brother arrived, it seemed she wouldn’t be resting for quite some time.
First, Irene approached Sir Gunnar considering he was the highest-ranked in the room at that moment.
"Would that be alright if my brother ate breakfast with the apprentices, sir?" she asked.
The knight turned his head and his eyes crinkled as he smiled.
"The more the merrier," he responded. "When will we expect to see you in the knighthood, boy?"
Arne glanced at his sister because he felt a bit intimidated.
"A couple of years yet, sir," he responded.
Gunnar chuckled and said, "You look even more like your father than Iro does."
"I’ll probably be taller than Iro too," Arne responded smoothly and Irene widened her eyes at the boy.
Gunnar’s chuckle turned into a full-on laugh. He knew that Irene’s height was a sore spot for her. It was amusing that even her brother knew as much.
"Go eat breakfast, we’ve been traveling a while."
"Yes, sir," Irene responded and bowed her head slightly.
Arne imitated her behavior and bowed his head in the same way. He then followed his sister towards a table where maids were giving them porridge. It wasn’t his favorite meal but he would eat it as if it were.
Irene couldn’t help noticing that Sir Gunnar called for a maid not long after the two of them walked away from him. The maid quickly left and she wondered what the knight asked of her.
However, her biggest hurdle was in front of her. She worried how Felix and Leif would behave in front of her brother, especially after witnessing their mother’s outburst in such a way. As she approached the table she usually sat at just beside the windows and full of mostly apprentices, she was surprised to see them scoot over on the bench with faint smiles on their faces.
She sat down next to Leif while her brother decided to sit down next to Felix.
As she looked at their expectant faces, she saw no sign of judgment. They were good in the right situations.
"Ah, this is my brother Arne," she introduced him.
"Nice to meet you, Arne," Felix greeted him first. "How old are you?"
"I’m almost ten," he responded a bit stiffly.
Felix’s eyes widened in amazement.
"Now I see where Sir Arthur’s height went," Felix commented with a laugh, receiving an immediate boot to his shin.
